Hostelling International has a new locationfor its Boston Hostel, which it has operatedfor the past 25 years. The historic 6-storybuilding at 25 Stuart Street, at anintersection of the midtown culturaldistrict, theatre district, and Chinatown, isclose to the Boston Public Garden andadjacent to public transportation. Thelocation could not be better! Theadditional capacity will enable us towelcome more than 46,000 visitorsannually! Currently, 60% of visitors are fromoutside the US, and many are visitingBoston for the first time.

Our new neighbors are anxiouslyanticipating our arrival in 2012 and we arelooking forward to participating in MayorMenino’s broad revitalization plans for thecity. A key part of those plans call for agreener, more sustainable city, and thehospitality and tourism industry in Bostonhas embraced this vision. The new Bostonhostel will play a role as the first LEEDcertified hostel in the U.S., with designsemerging from our architects thatincorporate many “green” technologies.

The new hostel will also provide vibrantpublic areas for Bostonians to enjoy withhostellers including a large, welcominglobby, a community room, and a groupkitchen for educational programming.

In the United States, hostelling has not yetbeen explicitly linked to sustainable worldtravel. Part of Hostelling International’sgoal for the new Boston facility is to makethis connection evident. Through the virtueof room sharing and self-serve groupkitchens and dining areas, a guest in ahostel uses less building energy andproduces less of an impact on theenvironment. In addition to a landmarkbuilding that would embody the mission ofHostelling International and welcomeguests to a gateway city with significanthistory, the building itself is beingdesigned to be both factually andrecognizably green. Examples of the manysustainable design features will be a greenroof, “green” elevators, and solar hotwater heating.
