The Japanese violinist Midori had just turned 31 when she cele-
brated her 20th stage anniversary on New Year's Eve 2002: Upon
invitation of Zubin Mehta, the then 11-year-old had made her
magnificent debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
In her unusually candid autobiography, she recalls the time be-
tween these two poles.
‘Midori has written a book − herself, yes. No team, no ghost
writer. And an honest book at that … And as always when Mi-
dori takes up something, she does it very, very thoroughly and
in the end truly well.’
The autobiography of one of the world's leading violinists
A ruthlessly candid report on a life beyond any normality and
on the downsides of a prodigy career
Midori has lately been designated as United Nations Messenger
of Peace

Manuel Brug
Rolando VillazónThe Art of Being a Tenor – A Portrait
160 pages – trade paperback
40 coloured and b/w images
13,5 x 21,5 cm
€ 19.90
ISBN 978-3-89487-626-5
Rolando Villazón is internationally recognized as one of the
leading lyric tenors of our day and has been acclaimed for per-
formances at the most important theatres across the world in-
cluding the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Royal
Opera House Covent Garden, Berlin State Opera, Bavarian
State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma,
Hamburg State Opera, Opéra de Lyon, Opéra de Nice, New
York City Opera and many others. For a lot of people he is the
only legitimate successor of the ‘Three Tenors’ José Carreras,
Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. Both his beaming
voice and his charisma and talent to perform fill opera lovers
from all over the world with enthusiasm. Already starting to be-
come an internationally known star, his participation in La
Traviata at the Salzburg Festival 2005 together with Anna Ne-
trebko made him famous all over the world for good. But al-
ready one and a half years later the Mexican singer had to pay
the price for his merciless self-exploitation: A crisis of his voice,
accompanied by spectacular cancellations, let him fall silent for
six months. In January 2008 he reported back to the stages, ma-
tured and more pensive than before. A stunning comeback as it
seems for now.
Manuel Brug, one of Germany’s most acclaimed opera critics,
follows in his portrait eight not only glamorous years of
Rolando Villazón’s career and lets us have a look into the flam-
boyant world of opera singers and the sometimes really rough
music business.
Important entrances of Rolando Villazón in London, New York,
Rome, Madrid, Amsterdam and Paris in 2009
– Rolando Villazón – the first authorized biography on the most
popular male opera-star
– With photographs from Villazón’s private album and carica-
tures drawn by the singer himself
– By the author of the successful ‘The New Opera Voices’ and

‘Is There Anything More BeautifulThan Longing?’Eleonora and Francesco von Mendelssohn
448 pages – hardcover with dust jacket
108 b/w images
13,5 x 21,5 cm
€ 29.90
ISBN 978-3-89487-623-4
Eleonora and Francesco von Mendelssohn were known as ‘the
most glamorous siblings of the Weimar Republic’. Born in 1900
and 1901 as direct descendants of the philosopher Moses
Mendelssohn, they soon became notorious in Berlin for their
extravagant appearance, their excessive lifestyle and their
friendships and affairs with some of the great figures of their
time, such as Max Reinhardt, Arturo Toscanini, Vladimir
Horowitz and Gustaf Gründgens. The Mendelssohn siblings
also made a lasting impression on the art world – Francesco as a
musician and theatre director, Eleonora as a celebrated theatre
actress. The takeover of the Nazis put an end to their hitherto
careless way of life: their emigration to the United States proved
to be a dead end for both their professional careers and private
lives.
Thomas Blubacher, born in 1967 in Basel, Switzerland, holds
a doctorate degree in theatre studies. He works as a director at
theatres in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the United States
and has published, amongst other books, a monograph on
Gustaf Gründgens. Blubacher has also written articles for news-
papers like Aufbau, DIE ZEIT and Süddeutsche Zeitung and
was the author of several radio features. In 2002 he was writer-
in-residence at the Villa Aurora in Pacific Palisades (USA).
– The first biography on the possibly most eccentric members
of the famous German-Jewish Mendelssohn family
– With fascinating anecdotes on various artists of the Weimar
era, such as Max Reinhardt, Vladimir Horowitz or Gustaf
Gründgens
– Introduction to the history of theatre, music and art in the
Weimar Republic
‘A fascinating portrait of two persons and a decade, a real
treasure trove on the Weimar Republic’ Die Welt

ISBN 978-3-89487-631-9
Jo Ann Endicott has been a dancer and assistant of Pina Bausch,
founder and artistic director of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, since
the very beginning. Waiting for Pina is Endicott’s very personal
account of her work with Bausch und her famous dance theatre
company. She describes her life as a passionate dancer, wife and
mother in a very humorous and lively way, without omitting the
difficulties and drawbacks of her profession: aging, unemploy-
ment, the exhausting balancing act between work and family,
and the dependence on the company and the choreographer. A
unique look behind the scenes of the Tanztheater Wuppertal by
one of its most distinctive protagonists.
Jo Ann Endicott was born in 1950 in Sydney, Australia. In
1973 she was asked by Pina Bausch to join her newly-founded
dance theatre company in Wuppertal. As a principal dancer she
heavily influenced Bausch’s early pieces. She left the company
in 1987, but returned in 1994 as a guest dancer, rehearsal super-
visor and Bausch’s assistant and has remained in that position
ever since.

– A dancer’s life with all its ups and downs
– With more than 60 photos taken by Gert Weigelt and other
well-known dance photographers

€ 12.95
ISBN 978-3-89487-472-8
William Forsythe is one of outstanding choreographers of the
present time. Like only George Balanchine and Merce Cunning-
ham before him, he has developed his own characteristic sensi-
tivity for the dance. With his visually stunning and enthralling
productions which are not afraid of coming into contact with
other arts, he has made the ballet a contemporary art form at the
end of the 20th century which arouses great enthusiasm through-
out the world far beyond the confines of an expert audience.
The present volume covers primarily his 20-year engagement
with the BALLETT FRANKFURT about which he says himself
that it is his ‘life's work’. With a biographical essay of the dance
critic Gerald Siegmund and articles of fellow artists and co-
workers of William Forsythe.
‘Finally, all aspects of the work of this great choreographer have
been reasonably connected to each other so that the depth of his
artistic work can shine. […] William Forsythe – Thinking in mo-
tion is a book that explains to every amateur why this artist is so
exceptional and that will be among the standard works of the
professional dance library.’
MDR Kultur

choreographers of the present time at the end of an era:

develop a wide range of measures that would ensure the highest
levels of sustainability for dance until 2010. Nine German cities
are part of ‘Tanzplan local’. They provide services ranging from

new dance study programmes, touring guest performance pro-
grammes and interdisciplinary symposia, up to new residencies
for young choreographers. As part of the Tanzplan Educational
Programme, the ‘1st Dance Education Biennale’, involving all
11 state-run dance colleges, was held in HAU/Berlin in the
spring of 2008, which will be followed by a second biennale in
2010 in Essen. Besides, inter-university workshops are organ-
ised, an E-Learning programme at the Salzburg University as
well as the new multimedia project of William Forsythe (‘Syn-
chronous Objects for One Flat Thing, reproduced’) were sup-

€ 29.90
ISBN 978-3-86502-199-1
Never had the work of an artist been at-
tacked as fiercely during his lifetime as
that of Joseph Beuys. A lot of legends
have grown up around his person and
his work, legends through which art
historians try to explain his unconven-
tional oeuvre and his character. The au-
thor has verified the truthfulness of
these myths and lets twenty Beuys ex-
perts as well as friends and relatives of
the artist get a word in. The photos of
this illustrated book show Beuys nei-
ther as an artificial character nor as fat
fetishist. They rather show scenes of a
many-faceted artist's life and show him
in private – as a person.
Christiane Hoffmans, born in Aachen
in 1961, is a literary scholar and holds a
Ph.D. in art history. After research proj-
ects in Florence, New York and Berke-
ley, she worked as an arts editor of
‘Bunte’ from 1999. Since 2001 she has
been editor with ‘Welt am Sonntag’,
being in charge of arts and culture in

national arts market.

Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) was a living
legend. Ever since the movie ‘Frida’
was released in 2002, she has been
known to a broad audience worldwide.
Pablo Picasso, Leo Trotzky, Heinz
Berggruen, André Breton, Tina Modotti
and Georgia O’Keeffe were just a few
of her many admirers.
She immortalized a lot of these names
in her private address book, which is
now released for the first time. It un-
folds the private cosmos of the Mexican
artist before the eyes of the reader. The
abundance of material strikingly shows
how much Frida Kahlo, in spite of her
own hardship, loved life itself and the
people surrounding her – men and
women alike.
The author, Christine Fischer-Defoy,
works in Berlin as an historian, a writer
and a film producer on topics like Nazi
persecution, German resistance and
exile. She has already published the pri-
vate address books of Heinrich Mann,
Walter Benjamin and Hannah Arendt.
– For the first time, the facsimile of the
original address book owned by
Frida Kahlo – one of the most influ-
ential artists of the 20th century – is
published.
– All entries are clarified through biog-
raphical data and extracts from her
personal correspondence.
