The weekly publication of Shirley Hills Baptist Church, Warner Robins, Georgia February 3, 2013 Volume 1, Issue 5 www.shirleyhills.org

Our mission is to love God, to love one another, and to love our community as committed followers of Jesus Christ.

Another gateway to the world: Blogging

The last time I was working for a newspaper, we occasionally went to conferences. In one such conference, a speaker made the most outlandish prediction. He said the day would come when people would read their newspapers on a computer screen!

That was roughly 25 years ago, back when we laughed at the picture of tomorrow painted by speakers at conferences.

None of us could imagine a day when newspapers would die, and computers would take over.

As I write these words — on a computer that would have made our jaws drop in those days — I have access to news sources across the world. The newspaper I worked for is one I check every day — on my computer. I also visit the Jerusalem Post from time to time, and checking in with CNN and FOX News is something I’ll do several times a day. Maybe you check such sites from your phone … something even our visionary conference leaders never imagined!

It’s a different world. And as you know, anyone can be a part of it. If you’re bright enough, you can make a living on the Internet. We have several such individuals in our church. And if you have a message to deliver? Blogging is the way to go.

Several of our church members blog. They write about politics, photography and faith. Some use humor. Some use photos. Some have ongoing debates with people who read their words.

We — you and I — have a new blog. It’s called “Secrets Please see PASTOR, page 2

It’s time to join a choir!

Thought about joining one of our choirs? February is the perfect time to get it done!

Our adult choir is preparing now for its presentation of spring music, set for Palm Sunday, March 24. In the meantime, they’ll continue to lead us with great music in both morning services. Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the choir room.

Our children’s choirs are also working on spring music. Children in grades 1-5 will combine for a joint children’s musical on May 19. Rehearsals are Sundays at 5 p.m. in the choir room on the second floor of the worship center.

Another great choir opportunity is our Keenager Choir, designed for adults 50 and older. Join this choir on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., in the Fellowship Hall.

Want to know more? Call the church office (923-5571) and ask for Fran Ryan.

For the next two Wednesday nights, our high school and middle school students will focus on one of the most practical aspects of their spiritual growth.

This year’s “True Love Waits” emphasizes on sexual purity. Youth Pastor Jeff Glenn teaches “The Pursuit of the Holy.” The Wednesday-night sessions begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Christian Life Center.

The emphasis finishes Sunday night, Feb. 10, with an area-wide gathering at Southside Baptist Church. This two-hour event begins at 6 p.m. and features music, skits and challenges for all our students.

For more information or questions, contact Pastor Jeff at [email protected] or by calling the church office (923-5571).

Pastor From page 1 from the Ancient Paths.” “We?” Sure. I’m writing the blog, but you made it possible. You’ve very generously allowed me to visit Israel nine times. The things I’ve discovered there have led to more study back home. After all these trips and all this study, we’re ready to share the lessons in the blogosphere.

We’re aiming for three new posts a week, and many of them are short excerpts from a new book we’ll have out in April, also called “Secrets from the Ancient Paths.” If the book goes well, we’ll probably be invited to produce a follow-up. I hope so.

But in the meantime, we’ve got some secrets to share.

The hard part of getting a blog off and running is … well … getting it off and running. Here’s another way you can be a part of this. If you’re on Facebook, share the link for new posts with

your friends. Ask some of them to do the same. Perhaps you have a lot of friends you contact through e-mail. Feel free to share new posts with those friends. Please share it!

Perhaps one day we’ll see a bigger ministry through this blog than any of us could imagine. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that the dreamers among us forecast a new way of getting our daily dose of news. And they were right!

On a related note, we’re upgrading our video technology in the worship center to produce a much better televised service for our Internet audience. In a sense, this is already our “third” morning service. Investing in this audience will increase our exposure even more.

We’ll keep you updated on the progress we’re making. In the meantime, share the news about “Secrets from the Ancient Paths.” After all, it’s time these secrets were secrets no longer.

This Saturday

We will begin a scholarship drive to support the camp’s reach into the neighborhoods in our community. $90 sponsorships for each child will assist families as we engage their kids in this incredible camp. Warner Robins has hosted this camp for the last 5 years and we have seen the need for scholarships grow each year. This year we are anticipating no less than 450 campers, and your sponsorship will go a long way in helping raise the $35,000 needed to support these children. Each of the 7 participating churches and the whole of the RBA will participate in this scholarship campaign, and we are excited to see what God will do in Warner Robins this summer.

We’re touring the old, beautifully-restored Governor’s Mansion in Milledgeville and having lunch at a local, highly-rated restaurant within walking distance of the mansion and the shops downtown. Following lunch, we’re going to Gray to visit Monroe at Stone Brooke Suites. Church bus leaves the parking lot at 8:45 Saturday morning for Milledgeville. Our $10.00 fee covers entrance ticket to the museum and bus gas. Lunch on your own. Please make checks payable to SHBC, annotated “Milledgeville”. Please call the church office to sign-up for this trip. Monday, FEB 4 – Our second Keenager Kouncil meeting for 2013. As always, we’ll meet in the church conference room at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, FEB 5 – Our Keenager luncheon at noon will feature Ashley Kendall, SBC missionary to the international community in Atlanta. Ashley is enthusiastic about her mission and will show large-screen pictures of her mission field and the international market – which may be one of our future trips. Friday, FEB 15 - Our next game night is Friday, February 15, and we’re looking for new people and new games to play. We always have a great time and you can help us make it even better! Margie Monroe is our new game night coordinator and she’ll be pleased to hear your ideas for making a good night larger and better. Remember our new start time is 6:00 p.m. and we meet in Fellowship Hall. Our energetic trip coordinator, Evelyn Davidson, is working hard to arrange our tour schedule for 2013.
