CHAIRMAN’S CHAT
As this year draws to a close at a frantic pace, it seems as though time flies by so quickly
that nothing gets done. I often feel like a hamster on a wheel, running as fast as I can, but
actually getting nowhere. This was until I happened to come across a “Practical
Photography” magazine dated April 2005. At first I didn’t realise that it was so old so I
wasn’t looking to see how much had changed in the last 6 years. But after reading it for a
while I came across equipment which had become obsolete many years ago. The first
piece of obsolete equipment that I noticed was the Nikon D70. I remember the D70 well, I
can remember wanting one of those 6.1 megapixel masterpieces so badly, but I wasn’t
convinced that digital images would ever be better than slides. In the same magazine,
there was also a comparison between the Nikon D100 and the Canon 20D. The 20D came
out a long way ahead, getting 5 stars while the D100 only got 3.
When I got to the part of the magazine where a number of different film scanners were
tested, it really struck me how things had changed. It has been so long since I used a film
scanner that I had forgotten that they even existed. Reading the article reminded me of the
frantic marketing of scanners that took place at the time. Everybody who could afford
one, bought one. I managed to get my hands on a Minolta Dimage Scandual. In 2005 it
was cutting edge technology. In 2011, when I look at those images that still exist on my
hard drive, they are absolutely rubbish!
The magazine also contained a number of editorial articles about how to shoot landscapes,
how to shoot castles and how to shoot flowers. In that respect nothing has changed. The
technical approach remains the same and the final images are no different to what we see
today.
So reading the old magazine made me realise that things do progress, even if we don’t
notice. The technology changes giving us better tools to achieve our objectives. The
objectives themselves though, don’t necessarily change. A good picture remains a good
picture no matter how it was made.
Good shooting
Colin

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE
1. Sellect Canvas (Frame) Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop if you wish to add a
boarder to the image and make your adjustements. If you do not wish to add a boarder, go
to Step 2.
2. Sellect Image Size under the heading “Image” in Photoshop. Tick the following boxes:
Scales Sizes, Constrain Proportions and Resample Images.
3. The maximum size of the image must not exceed 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high.
4. When resizing a horizontal image (Landscape) enter 1920 pixels in the Width Box and the
vertical size will be adjusted automatically if you have ticked the “Resample Image” box. If
the vertical size is 1080 pixels or less, the resizing is correct. If the vertical adjusts to a
value more than 1080 pixels (say 1096 pixels) then adjust the vertical size to 1080 pixels
and the horizontal size will automatically reduce to below 1920 pixels if you have ticked the
“Resample Image” box.
5. When resizing a vertical impage (Portrait) enter 1080 pixels in the Height Box. The value in
the Width Box will change automatically to match the original image if you have ticked the
“Resample Image” box.
6. The maximum image data file size is 1,500Kilobytes in the JPEG format. Note that if a
border is added to the image, this must be added before resizing and reducing the file size to
a maximum of 1,500 Kilobytes to ensure that the image remains within the specified
1,500Kb.
7. It is recommended that the image be displayed in the sRGB Colour Profile. This can be
sellected in the camera or changed in Photoshop under Edit/Convert to Profile.

First Camera and
Year acquired
Dave bought me a Point & Shoot for Christmas in 2007. I only really started
using this camera the following December when we were holidaying in the
Drakensberg, when I took the time to go out early in the morning looking for
the perfect light and scenery.
I then purchased a Canon 1000 D, and went off to the Vega College of
Photography in Bedfordview to learn how to use this camera in March 2009.
I met Dave Gordon when we had our Photographic outing at the
Modderfontein Conservatory Reserve – Dave was our Guide and Adviser, who
then also introduced me to EPC.

Main Photographic
interest
I have a passion for Macro photography, to really see things and to be able to
capture the intricate detail and beauty of nature, and then to share this - with
viewers and those who can appreciate this, humbles me and gives me great
pleasure.
Dave and I love being out and about at the various Game Parks, and we take as
many opportunities as we can, to be in the “bush” trying our luck with birds in
flight. Not as easy as some would think!
Landscapes – here is another genre that I am working on.
I personally would like to be an “all-rounder” and really enjoy going on the
club outings to try out different genres of photography (not always with great
success, but I will persevere – as I have a lot to learn). Club evenings also
provide the opportunity to learn something more, so I try not to miss any of
these gatherings.

9. This is an appeal to all members to consider entering the Prints Section on Club
Nights to ensure that this medium stays an active part of Photography at ECP. It
would be a pity if this medium fades away due to lack of support.

Marievale
Good for bird photography with the
occasional view of otters and crabs.
There are 5 or so hides along the
different roads. The roads are pretty
unkept and heavy duty vehicles do travel
them for mining in the area.
Marievale is situated on the East Rand to
the South-East of Johannesburg. Access is
easiest from Johannesburg via the N3
towards Heidelberg. Take the R550
(Glenroy/Kliprivier) offramp and turn left.
Follow this road for approximately 20 km
to a T-junction and turn right towards
Nigel. Follow this road through Nigel until
you see a sign on the left indicating the
sanctuary. The sanctuary is approximately 3
km further on after passing the SANDF
(defence force) base.
Rondebult Bird photography. There are 3 main
hides. Good for morning photography.
Rondebult is a short drive (approx. 25
minutes) from Johannesburg International
Airport and within an hours drive from
Pretoria. The sanctuary is open daily
throughout the year from 07h00 to 17h00
and is found by heading south from
Johannesburg on the N3 highway. The
sanctuary is well signed posted and after
turning left at the R103/R554 (Heidelberg /
Alberton road) off-ramp and the sanctuary
is on the right hand side of the road after
approximately 9 km. The entrance is
directly opposite the junction with the R554
and Forsdick road.

HUMOUR
Disaster:
Amazing photos show great detail.
The pilot at low level had no control over his
aircraft. It narrowly misses a crowd gathered for
the air show and slams into four buildings. One
can only imagine the horror of the occupants
inside those buildings.
Probably scared the sh** out of them.

UNUSUAL PHOTOGRAPHS
Law Of The Wild says Kill ONLY when you are Hungry
Photographer Michel Denis-Huot, who captured these amazing pictures on safari in
Kenya's Masai Mara in October last year,
Said he was astounded by what he saw:
"These three brothers (cheetahs) have been living together since they left their mother
at about 18 months old,' he said.
'On the morning we saw them, they seemed not to be hungry, walking quickly but
stopping sometimes to play together.
'At one point, they met a group of impala who ran away. But one youngster was not
quick enough and the brothers caught it easily'."
These extraordinary scenes followed.
