Today, you are going to use your knowledge and understanding of the characters to put

yourself 'in their shoes' and write a diary entry as one of them.

How would you define a 'diary'? What features would you expect to see?

Think, pair, then share your ideas.


A diary is a record of someone's experiences, thoughts and feelings. Here are some of the features they can include:

Written in the first person.

Past tense may be used if the writer is recounting the events of the day.

Present tense may be used to express current thoughts and opinions.

An informal, 'chatty' tone. Ordinary, everyday language is used, and may

include slang words. Contractions are often used, e.g. 'I've', 'I'm', 'don't'.

The writer's thoughts, feelings and opinions of events or other

people are explained.

Usually, the writer never intends their diary to be read by anyone else, so they can be honest and

truthful in what they write.

These are questions which the writer does not expect an answer to. They could be asked to make an obvious answer stand out more, or to make

the reader think about something more deeply.

Diaries are generally unplanned pieces of writing. They can use a style of writing called stream of consciousness. This is when a person writes down their thoughts

and feelings as they are experiencing them, in a continuous flow.


I can't believe they've left me all alone ... I don't know what to do ... I'm going to have to take care of myself now ... maybe they will come back for me ... what should I do?


This is when words have been carefully chosen by the writer in order to evoke an emotional reaction in the reader.

They are all nothing but wicked liars and thieves!

How dare they - I am boiling with rage!

Maybe this is finally my long-awaited chance to get off

this doomed island!

That poor, unfortunate boy. What a tragic, unbelievable thing to

have happened to someone so young and innocent.

One last tip... to write convincingly from another's point of view, you have to be able to

empathise with them - try to imagine that person's thoughts and feelings as if they were your own.
