*CALL TO WORSHIP (Responsively) Mikayla Burkholder (Based on Proverbs 3:5-7)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

and do not lean on your own understanding.

Lord, we seek to understand your ways.

In all your ways acknowledge Him,

and He will make straight your paths.

Lord, show us your ways.

Be not wise in your own eyes,

fear the Lord and turn away from evil.

Lord, show us your wisdom.

*HYMN We All Are One in Mission TFWS 2243

*OPENING PRAYER (In Unison) Colin DeLeon

God of infinite patience, as the children of Israel sought an

earthly king over your heavenly rule, so too we have too often

put our hope and trust in flawed human beings to rule over

us. We complain when they disappoint us in their inability to

bring change, yet we have failed to see that the change that

you would seek for creation must come from within us. As we

offer our tithes and offerings to you this day, may we also lay

down our resistance to allowing you to be the one who rules

our lives, not from the outside but from the inside. And may

the gifts we give help shape a world that better fits your

vision for creation. In the name of Christ, we pray.

Amen. (1 Samuel 8:4-20)

In the name of Christ

WELCOME!

Although you may be a

stranger to us, you are no

We sincerely hope this

you.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

You are invited to a Farewell Reception

honoring Mike, Elaine, Jeremy and Claire Nelson

on Mike’s last Sunday, June 28, 2015

following the 11:00 am service.

With our deepest appreciation, we will present a Love Offering to the Nelsons at the reception. You may mail your Love Offering to the church office (110 E. Queen St, Hampton, 23669) or place your Love Offering in Sunday’s collection plate. Please make the notation of “Love Offering for the Nelsons” on the check memo line. Please send your Love Offering to the church office by Wednesday, June 24.

We offer our very best wishes to the Nelson Family.

Who doesn’t like money?? Do you have about 30-60 minutes you could be at the church on

the fourth Monday (sometimes Tuesday) of every month? Do we have a job for you!!!!

We need two folks who are not related, not married, over 18 and who would be willing to

help us out. Please call Laura in the church office and volunteer to help count the Sunday

offering!

Are you getting tired of seeing this announcement? Please prayerfully consider helping

with this ministry. According to the discipline the treasurer nor the financial secretary should

count the money.

Nursery Attendant Awarded Teacher of the Year

We are pleased to announce that FUMC Hampton’s very own nursery attendant,

Ms. Jenny Hamm, was awarded the 2015 Teacher of the Year for Francis

Asbury Elementary School in Hampton, where she teaches special education

students in grades kindergarten to fifth.

Candidates for this prestigious award are considered based on the following

criteria: concern for each student; ability to inspire learning in all students of all

backgrounds and abilities; ability and willingness to devote time and energy to

activities that result in improved instruction for children; ability to work

effectively with the community; desire to keep abreast of current educational

theories and practices; ability and willingness to make contributions to the field

of education; ability to create and implement innovative educational practices;

and respected and admired by students, parents and colleagues.

Of her recent recognition, Ms. Hamm stated “I'm extremely proud to receive this

award! I pride myself on my work each day, with each student, and I'm honored

to be recognized for my dedication to my students and all of the students I've

worked with in Hampton City Schools!”

Ms. Hamm and other Hampton schools’ selected teachers were honored at

Hampton City Schools’ Teacher of the Year banquet, which was held on May 14,

2015, at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

Congratulations, Jenny!

FRIENDLY, OUTGOING, ENTHUSIASTIC

VOLUNTEERS WANTED!

If you love people, love the Lord, and enjoy being outdoors, the Evangelism

Committee has the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!

On Saturday, June 20, from 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm, the City of Hampton will turn

the bridge at Settler's Landing Road into a giant water slide (near the Crowne

Plaza Hotel, 720 Settlers Landing Road, Hampton, VA 23669). People can buy

tickets to slide once, several times, or unlimited times throughout the day.

As an outreach effort, the Evangelism Committee plans to set up a "cooling

station" outside the church that day for visitors in downtown Hampton. We'll

have a pop-up tent or two, some long tables, chairs, and coolers of water and

lemonade to offer guests.

Volunteers are needed to help set up the cooling station Friday afternoon

(shouldn't take more than one hour). We also need about 3 - 5 volunteers on

Saturday to set up the coolers and cups and to oversee the cooling station

between 12:00 and 3:00 pm.

We need your help!!!

Please contact William Milholen: (757) 238-3656.

The Evangelism Committee would like to

thank everyone for making the Pirate Oasis

Project a great success last Saturday. We

gave out 400 cold bottles of water, which had a

nice label with a scripture verse and our church

logo on it. This year we also gave out colorful

Christian themed bracelets which were a big hit!

If you have ways to make it even better next

year contact someone on the Evangelism

Committee. Thanks again, Mateys!

Your concern when I had the severe bout with

pneumonia was truly felt and appreciated. Thank

you so much for your prayers, inspirational cards of

encouragement, phone calls, flowers, visits, prayer

shawl, and being such a caring church family.

Our flower chart is ALMOST filled for 2015.

We have two dates available: Sept 20 and 27.

If you feel so led to pay for the flowers that

adorn our sanctuary please sign up on the list

Well it’s time for the church to “go fishing!” Folks there are

plenty of “fish” out there (people who need Christ). Jesus

said “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men”. It

is what Jesus would do!!! So in order to go out on a fishing

trip we need to prepare. We need to pick our dates, get the

right bait, prepare the cooler with some good things to share

and get out on the boat and fish! Preparation takes work

and lots of folks to help. In anticipation of the new

challenges facing this congregation we are going to order the

2016 calendars and how appropriate that the 2016 planning calendar theme is

“Let’s Go Fishing”. They are $9.95 each. We would very much like each

committee chair to have one, and anyone else who would like to use one. These

calendars include the days and seasons of the Christian year, Lectionary readings

each week, planning checklists each month, yearly planning for the next year and

lists of resources and agency telephone numbers.

We have two BIG fishing trips coming up, Slide the City on June 20 and one of our

biggest fishing trips of the year – Vacation Bible School, June 22-26!!! What is in

your cooler to share with these folks?? Get ready…..Let’s Go Fishing!!!!

It’s hurricane season — let’s get ready!

Hurricane season began June 1 and runs through November 20, so the United Methodist

Committee on Relief (UMCOR) offers its annual “Top Five Disaster Preparedness Tips”

gathered from the field.

#1. Do something to prepare. This sounds simple, but Pam Garrison, disaster response

coordinator for the Florida Conference, says the biggest mistake she sees people making with

regard to hurricane preparation is “just doing nothing.” Many resources can help you prepare

yourself, your family and your neighbors. Three of the best preparation guides are: Federal

Emergency Management Agency’s “Ready,” National Hurricane Center’s “National Hurricane

Preparedness Week” and American Red Cross’ “Hurricane Preparedness.”

#2. Figure out where you’ll go. If emergency management officials tell you to leave town

because of a hurricane threat, you should leave. “If I had to pick one aspect of hurricane

preparedness, it would be this: have a personal plan as to where you will relocate should a

hurricane evacuation be called,” said Greg Forrester, UMCOR executive in charge of U.S.

Disaster Response. You should gather what you need to take with you if you have to evacuate.

For example, back up your essential information on a jump drive and take care of your papers

and medications. The American Red Cross has a smart phone app that gives the locations

of local shelters. Many state emergency management agencies have smart phone alerts or apps

that give information about road closures.

#3. Watch the forecast—and know how to interpret it. The National Hurricane Center is

predicting a “below-normal” Atlantic hurricane season, but that’s no reason to believe coastal

areas will have it easy. Don’t rest easy with the words “below normal.” Hurricane Andrew—a

Category 5 hurricane that devastated South Florida—occurred in the 1992 Atlantic hurricane

season, which was forecast as a “below-normal” season.

#4. Prepare your church. UMCOR’s “Connecting Neighbors Leadership Training Program”

gives volunteer trainers the tools and information they need to guide the development of local

church disaster-response ministries. A video inventory of your church buildings, room by

room, should be part of your preparation. In some churches, young people take real

ownership of that task.

#5. Know what to give—and what not to give. In the wake of a hurricane, UMCOR will

collect funds to help meet the needs—both immediate and long-term—of hurricane survivors.

Visit the UMCOR website, www.umcor.org/UMCOR/Support, and sign up for text alerts so you

can give in a timely manner.

Virginia Advocate

Page 15: First United Methodist Church of Hamptonfirstumchampton.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Bulletin672015.pdf · ANTHEM African Alleluia Youth Choir SERMON Christian Leadership Colin

Another way of giving? Assemble relief-supply kits—particularly health kits and school

kits—so that UMCOR’s warehouses can get kits into the hands of people who really need them.

The most oft-cited rule about what not to give? Don’t give clothes. They often become “the

second disaster.” Instead, give cash donations that will help disaster survivors purchase

needed items from local businesses and boost an economy weakened by disaster.

Your gift to UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response, Advance #901670, allows UMCOR to

support annual conference disaster response efforts with training and timely resources.

Watch Annual Conference live stream on website, Facebook: Live streaming of the 2015

Virginia Annual Conference will be available, beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, June 19, from the

Virginia Conference website, www.vaumc.org, and from the Virginia Conference Facebook

page, www.facebook.com/vaumconf. Or go directly to http://livestream.com/VAUMC/AC2015

. The live streaming will show all sessions of the three-day conference, including worship at 11

a.m. Sunday, June 21, when Bishop Young Jin Cho will preach. Local churches may show the

live video of the Annual Conference worship service during their Sunday morning worship

services and participate by following the liturgy for the service that will be available to

download from the conference website at www.vaumc.org/AC2015 .

Video tells of Staunton District superintendent trip down river: On Wednesday, May 13,

the Rev. Dave Rochford, Staunton District superintendent, began a four-day trip paddling his

kayak down rivers on the western side of the district and beyond to save lives from malaria. He

had challenged Staunton District churches to help send him down the river by sponsoring his

trip. For every $100 donated to Imagine No Malaria, Rochford agreed to paddle a mile.

Churches raised more than $13,000, saving 1,300 lives. To watch a video about his adventure,

and see other videos highlighting ministries of the Virginia Conference, go to the conference

YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/vaumcvideos and the conference Facebook page at

Quote of the Week: “We have not had a catastrophic storm in quite a few years, so people

forget that it can happen. They become complacent and they don’t prepare.” — Pam Garrison,
