First Things
Dear Members of First Lutheran Church, As we prepare to start our sixth month together, let me share a word of Thanks with you. First to Viola Lillian Bothe, for her generous estate gift that she shared with you, the members of
First Lutheran. Viola passed away last year and her estate gift was received shortly thereafter. The
church council and your pastors shared part of the gift with the larger church and the remainder
was placed in the First Lutheran Foundation where it will continue to provide financial support to
the ministry of this congregation as it moves into the future. Viola's gift will be a lasting legacy
that will reflect her faith in Jesus Christ and her life within this community.
Secondly, a Thank You to all those who have participated in moving stuff so that the floor tile
could be removed, the painting that has followed, and the carpet laid. We are not finished and
there is work still to be done, but a thank you none the less for those have and are volunteering.
Also, thank you for the financial gifts that have come in to support this important work.
Lastly, a word of Thanks to all of you, who have so warmly welcomed me into your midst during
this time of transitions. I am so appreciative of the people I am gifted to work with each week, the
Volunteers, the Staff, the Church Council, the Women’s Bible Study members, and the Men’s Bible
Study members. You have been a blessing in my life. Because of the Covid 19 Vaccines, we are
able to continue the re-opening of the Church. Each of us on staff has been vaccinated and we
look forward to a more "normal" gathering of the faith community.
Yours in Christ, Pastor David B. Zellmer Interim

We will not be changing the worship schedule for this
Summer. Sunday services will remain at:
8:30 am Traditional Festival Service with piano
10:30 am Contemporary Praise Service with the Praise Team
The Services will continue to be
streamed on Facebook Live and the FLC App.
The call committee is pleased to report that
we have had a busy month reviewing
candidates for our Senior Pastor position.
With the help of the SD Synod, we have
received four Rostered Minister Profiles and
have completed initial interviews via Zoom
with all four. Each candidate brings a
variety of gifts and strengths, and the call
committee has been meeting to discuss
which of these might best serve the needs
we outlined together as a congregation.
We will be moving forward with two in-
person interviews during June to continue
our conversations with and evaluations of
these candidates, as well as give each of
them an opportunity to get to know FLC
Brookings.
We appreciate your continued support and
prayers as we seek God’s guidance in this
process!
The FLC Call Committee
Lutheran World Relief is a ministry serving communities living in poverty around the world.
Previously, the FLCW collected and packed personal care kits to be sent to Lutheran World
Relief to be distributed around the world. We thank them for their time and devotion.
Jayden Almos and Jazlynn Pederson are now looking forward to the opportunity to carry this
mission forward, and ask for your help in collecting the required items. Please find the
collection box in the Narthex. You can help now by donating a personal care kit or a
donation of money to help cover shipping costs. Please make checks out to First Lutheran
Church (please write “care kits” on memo line.)
Each kit needs the following items:
1 light or medium weight bath-size towel (52” X 27”) – dark color.
2 bath-size bars (4-5 oz.) soap in original wrapping
1 adult size toothbrush in packaging (may be sealed in an envelope)
1 sturdy comb (remove packaging)
1 metal nail clippers (remove packaging)
All items should be new. Please wrap all the items in the towel and tie with ribbon or yarn
OR you can donate individual items and we will assemble the kits. THANK YOU!

THE MUSIC OF LENT
MUSIC NEWS
From Pat Anderson, 8:30 Music Director
As we approach the summer months, my mind
goes back to last summer and our outdoor
worship services. While I did enjoy them, despite
playing through a rainstorm, I am looking forward
to services being in our sanctuary this summer.
Our summer worship services will continue to be
at 8:30 and 10:30, in-person and live streamed.
We will be using setting six from ELW for the 8:30
summer worship. It has been used before and
has a contemporary feel that works well with our
shift to piano during the summer. There will
continue to be song leaders who will lead and
guide us in our summer worship. If there is
anyone who would like to be a song leader,
please let me know so I can schedule you for a
Sunday.
Thank you to all persons who have led worship
this past year. We so appreciate your dedicated
service. Isn’t it great to be singing together
again?

What a year!!! So much has changed since this time last year. One thing that remains the
same is the joy we feel when we are blessed to be together digitally or in person.
The end of May we wrap up our Family VBS gatherings at the church, but we hope that
families will continue to share and engage in the activities they received in the take home
kits. It has been wonderful seeing people of all ages working together to learn about and
share their faith through these take home activities. In June and July we will begin working
on Fall programing.
PLEASE, PLEASE Ensure that children/youth ages 3-12th grade register for Fall
programing now.
We are here to help you nurture your child’s faith journey. What better way to work
together towards that goal than to volunteer to help with the children’s/youth programing?
It is so rewarding to watch the faith of a child blossom right in front of you. Don’t feel
comfortable with kids? There are so many ways to help. Reach out and we can find a good
fit for you.
If you are interested in helping in any way, use the Fall children’s programing
registration form to sign up as a volunteer. (Put N/A if questions don’t apply to
your role.)
Our Children, Youth & Family team are working on some fun family events to be held over
the summer. Keep an eye out on FB, the App notifications, and our Website for more
information. To register for programs scan this code or go to firstlutheranbrookings.org
and scroll down a bit.
ALL ARE WELCOME!!!! Invite your friends, bring your family. We can’t wait to be together
again!

helping out this fall please look to the Children’s Ministry bit in the newsletter for important

2. As a group we might have discovered Disc Golf to be easier than our attempt at bowling.
A BIG THANK YOU to all who supported the Youth Group’s first fundraiser, “Masks, Mugs,
and Mixes.” We raised $438! This will be put toward our trip to the ELCA National Youth
Gathering in the summer of 2022!
Youth Group will be held twice a month during June, July, and August. Keep an eye out for
emails and notifications on the app for more in-depth plans.
A friendly reminder that I am here to support all youth, independent upon their activity level
at First Lutheran. Please reach out with any need of support or prayer requests.
Congratulations to our high school and college graduates, we will be praying for you in this

Welcome Back!!! We will be reopening on
June 1st and that’s the biggest news!!!! The
volunteers and I are looking forward to
getting back into the swing again and to
serve you. I am sure you are ready to
return for all your favorite foods and drinks.
Especially, you are ready to be able to see
all your friends and share experiences from
your lives this last year.
As you can imagine, things got a little dusty
and disorganized while we were closed. We
are working hard to clean everything,
ordering food and coffee, and preparing for
all you wonderful patrons.
Kool Beans is willing to supply all their
excellent coffee beans and service. I have
a willing food service company who will
supply most of the food we like to serve.
Here we go, back in business!
We will be on our summer schedule, which
is Monday-Thursday, 8:00-2:00. We will be
following Brookings City Council guidelines
on precautionary measures. We plan to
keep all patrons, staff, and volunteers as
safe as possible.
Thank you to First Lutheran Church for all
the love and support. We look forward to
seeing you all !!!
