PASTOR’S COLUMN
Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure
spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apos-
tles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee,
and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collec-
tor; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who
betrayed him. (Matthew 10:1-4, NIV)
Have you ever wondered what went on behind the scenes in the life of Jesus and his
disciples? As they traveled together, what were their conversations like? Did they talk
about the day’s events, such as Jesus’ teachings and miracles? Did they talk about
other things, such as family, interests, politics and family? While their relationships
will remain a mystery, I can imagine that it took some time and patience to come to-
gether.
Two names strike me in particular – Matthew, the tax collector and Simon the Zealot.
Matthew was an employee of Rome. His job was to collect revenues from the people
of Capernaum to give to the Empire. Rome, after all, provided protection, peace and
order in Palestine. Then, there is Simon the Zealot. We know very little about Simon,
but the title Zealot ought to provide some clues. Simon hated Rome. As a Zealot,
Simon believed that the only way to deal with Rome was to deal with them the way the
Jews dealt with the Greeks nearly two hundred years prior. The best thing to do would
be to fight them. Then they would invoke the name of the LORD to bring Rome to its
knees. Palestine was the land of God’s people, and his kingdom was coming soon.
Matthew and Simon were as polar opposites as Jews could be. Matthew may have
been one of the Sadducees, or, at least, a sympathizer with the Sadducees. The Saddu-
cees believed that the LORD was ruling the world through Rome and using Rome to
provide blessing to those who were in line with his will. The Sadducees controlled the
Temple, and maintained friendship with Rome. The Zealots, on the other hand, hated
everything about Rome. They hated those who sold out to Rome. They believed that
God’s kingdom would come through war with Rome. It was
I imagine that Simon and Matthew had interesting conversations as they traveled
with Jesus. Both had political ideologies that had suited them for some time. They
were as divided as the United States of America was last night as election results were
tallied. The Northeast and the West Coast voted strongly in favor of Hillary Clinton,
the Democratic Party Candidate. Southern States, Florida, the Rust Belt and the Mid-
west all cast their vote for Donald Trump. More than that, urban counties came out
strong for Clinton, while rural counties were overwhelmingly dominated by Trump.
This morning, we live in a divided nation. In fact, the popular vote, which Clinton won
narrowly, indicates how divided our nation is.
It is interesting as polarizing Matthew and Simon’s politics may have been, they both
left their ideologies behind. They followed Jesus. They put aside their differences and
followed the Lamb, who truly is the one sent from God to bring salvation to the world.
Christians are not called to withdraw from the world, nor are they called to withdraw
from politics. However, going forward, may we point to an even greater reality. In
Jesus Christ, the Kingdom of God has drawn near. It is working its way through cul-
tures and societies. From these societies, God is creating a people to be His very own,
to be a light to the world and salt to for the earth. And through His people, God intends
to bless the world.
May we pray for our leaders. May we remain involved. However, may we lead the
world to follow the One who truly offers salvation and peace to our world.
Grace and peace,
Tim
