The Westlake Board of Education is moving forward with appointing Geoff Palmer, former superintendent of the West Geauga School District, as interim superinten-dent for the 2014-2015 school year. Palmer has 11 years experience as a superintendent and has demonstrated success in identified areas of focus for the Westlake Schools, including fiscal management, labor nego-tiations, communications, and capital and strategic planning. “Mr. Palmer presented the Board with a comprehen-sive Interim Superintendent Transition Plan,” said Board of Education President Carol Winter. “We are confident that he will own the position as if it were permanent and will have a positive impact on the Westlake City Schools.” Palmer previously served as superintendent for Hopewell-Loudon Schools and was an administrator with

Senator Gayle Manning (R- North Ridgeville) today an-nounced the approval of $1,549,625 in funds to Lorain Coun-ty Community College (LCCC) for the construction phase of the Physical Science Building Renovation in Elyria, Ohio. “This renovation project is just one more example of LCCC’s continued commitment to preparing its students for success in Ohio’s dynamic workforce,” Manning said. The Physical Sciences Building on the LCCC campus currently houses science and mathematics courses, and the grant will allow for the creation of a Math Lab, now re-ferred to as the Math Studio.
Manning Announces $1.5 Millionfor LCCC Construction
LCCC tutoring data shows a need for dedicated math tutoring, as mathematics comprises 48% of all tutoring. The new Math Lab will allow the needed space for both group and individualized tutoring. In addition, the old Physics area located on the first floor of the building, is being renovated to become four, 30-seat classrooms. “We know from our area employers that math and sci-ence skills are in-demand for today’s jobs, and this grant will allow LCCC to further develop quality programming for its students with a focus on these skills,” added Manning.
Westlake Schools to Appoint Interim Supt.Van Buren Schools before his tenure in West Geauga. He earned his graduate degree in education from Bowling Green State University and certificates in superintendency and educa-tional system administration from the University of Findlay. The Board voted on Palm-er’s hiring at the July 14 Board of Education meeting. He will fill the interim role for the 2014-2015 school year. As indi-cated, the Board will revisit the process of naming a per-manent superintendent in late 2014/early 2015.
On 07/02/2014, at 0127 hrs, a Parkside resident called BVPD to report a suspicious vehicle had been parked and occupied in front of his house for some time. The operator of the vehicle was having mechanical problems and they were trying to get the car started. They were assisted and sent on their way. On 07/02/2014, at 1411 hrs, a Nantucket Row resident re-ceived a strange phone call which sounded like a recording. A fe-male voice stated the Bay Village resident was to report to her local police or contact Officer Morris at the District of Columbia PD. The
resident was advised it sounds like the pretext for a scam and she should not call Officer Morris. On 07/04/2014, at 0128 hrs, an officer on routine patrol spot-ted a male riding a bicycle in the high school parking lot and he appeared to be having trouble operating the bike. After speaking with the 19 YOA male he was arrested for underage consumption. A search incident to arrest was conducted and, as a result, he was additionally charged with possession of marijuana.
Neighborly Altercation On 07/08/2014, at 0705 hrs, BVPD officers responded to a Ke-nilworth address on the report of a verbal altercation between two
neighbors. They were arguing because one neighbor used a weed killer to kill some of her weeds and it appeared as though some of the neighbor’s flowers may have perished as a result. They were counseled and advised on a course of action.
Car Borrowed, Not Stolen On 07/08/2014, at 0806 hrs, a Cliff Dr. resident called to report his Mercedes had been stolen overnight. About an hour later, while officers were investigating the incident, the owner’s friend returned home with the Mercedes. He had borrowed it and did not let the owner know. The owner did not want to press charges.

Westlake Police BeatBay Miscreants Invade Westlake Westlake Police report that several Bay Vil-lage residents have recently traveled south of the border to encounter trouble. An intoxicated 25-year-old Bay Village man ran from a passing patrolman on Detroit Rd. at 2:43 a.m. on June 29. His choice of bushes to hide in proved inadequate and he was arrested for DCI. Not to be outdone, a 24-year-old Bay Village man found himself more than waist deep in the Big Muddy as he stumbled along Crocker Rd. on June 30 at 6:58 p.m.. Somewhat the worse for drink, he stepped off the sidewalk and into a mud-filled rut as an officer watched. After being arrested for DCI, he was showered in the jail. The cruiser’s rear seat also needed a thorough hosing out.
Drunk & Topless Pounding on doors, falling into bushes, staggering around Walter Rd., an intoxicated 49-year-old North Olmsted wom-an brought tons of scrutiny onto herself at 10:29 p.m. on June 29. When detained by officers, she took off her shirt for whatever reason and was arrested for DCI.
Surprise! A bank sent a Hummingbird Cr. man a letter about his new accounts on June 25. This was a surprise to him, as he had not done any business with that bank. The accounts were closed.
Menacing A Cleveland woman’s 49-year-old uncle left a threatening message for her at her Center Ridge Rd. workplace on June 27. Uncle demand-ed money or he would kill her and her boyfriend. The City Prosecutor will rule on a possible Agg. Menacing charge.
