OVERVIEW
I am penning this message just after the ‘Diya Jalao’ for 9 minutes on 5th April 2020 in response to the Prime Minister’s call. This is a significant moment in our lives and we hope that normalcy would resume and the positive energy released from themillions of candles lit across the country will alter the course of the extraordinary period of social distancing and consequent‘Work from Home’ (WFH) that has engulfed the world, the likes of which we have never experienced.
Academia which has generally been known to be traditional and where not too many innovations have taken place has underthese extraordinary circumstances become innovative. Without so much of a business continuity plan (BCP), we took up theonerous task of completing the academic cycle through online delivery of classes. In this effort both faculty and studentscollaborated to the hilt across our various programs at our Bangalore campus. We would have completed around 1,800+sessions through the online mode to ensure that the academic curriculum was complete in all respects. Concurrently, we haveensured that the end term examinations are completed and students are evaluated in keeping with our rigorous standards andthe expectations of corporate recruiters as well as accreditation agencies. The mode of examinations was open book type, wherein the questions were more rigorous and elaborate necessitating extensive research/ data collection, analysis, andassessments emphasised at evaluating the ‘critical thinking skills’ and ‘creativity’ of students. In fact, the COVID-19 crisispresented us an opportunity to radically transform the nature of examination and assessment and the considered views of allour faculty and students was that this was a superior way of evaluating students compared to the conventional time-boundexaminations. They say ‘Necessity is the Mother of Invention’ and although we have not invented, we believe that we haveinnovated making extensive use of technology. This could not have been possible without the cooperation and exemplarycontribution of faculty, students, and IT administration in this hour of crisis.

MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR
For students who are graduating and those who will be doing summer internships it is a taste of what one might expect inthe years to come. In recent years we have been laying stress on Risk management as a course of study and equippingour students to manage enterprise risks, but the current crisis resulting from COVID-19 is beyond normal risks that can bemeasured and in the realms of uncertainty caused by 'unknown unknowns'. The experience garnered by students duringthis period would have prepared them better for a future where uncertainty might be the ‘new normal’. This experienceshould also enhance their skills in handling ambiguity in the course of executing strategies and meeting objectives, goalsand targets.
For all of us in academia and corporate sectors, it is a time for reflection to examine the way we conduct ourselves andmanage our organisations. In this effort, we at NMIMS would be happy to work closely with industry and remodel ourcurriculum and pedagogies so as to make them cutting edge and meet the contemporary needs of corporates.
Wishing all our PGDM graduates the very best in their careers and to the corporates let me reiterate our commitment toproduce high quality management graduates who are competent, job ready, ethical and potential business leaders.
With warm regards,
Dr. Suresh MonyDirector
