Filtration media shown toeffectively remove arsenic

Metals & Arsenic RemovalTechnology Inc (MARTI), asubsidiary of US companyHydroFlo Inc, has confirmedoriginal test results for its ARTI-64 media, which effectivelyremoves contaminants – such asarsenic, copper, lead, zinc andsulphates from water.

The original laboratory resultswere provided by the Universityof Wyoming, US, whenHydroFlo initially acquired thetechnology during August 2004.Once filtered through the

media, it was foundthat arsenic levelswere undetectable. The latest laboratorydata was furnished byEnvironmentalChemist Inc. Theseresults actuallyexceeded theoutcomes of theinitial tests, reportsthe company.

EnvironmentalChemist analysed the

ARTI-64 compound for theremoval of total arsenic, copper, zinc and lead. The datademonstrated that total arseniclevels were taken from 7.95 partsper million (ppm) to 0.6 parts perbillion (ppb), making arseniclevels virtually undetectable. Dataalso revealed that lead wasremoved from the contaminatedwater.

ARTI-64 media is scheduled to beused in water filter cartridgesproduced by Swiss company WalSA for household.

Zenon Environmental Inc hasbeen selected to supply what itclaims is the world’s largestmembrane bioreactor.

According to Zenon, theZeeWeed MBR (membranebioreactor) supplied to KingCounty, Washington, USA, willtreat an average-day flow ofapproximately 144,000 m3 ofmunicipal sewage, or 38 milliongallons per day (mgd) – with peakflows up to 204,000 m3 or 54million mgd – and serving over100,000 households. Design ofthis greenfield plant is currentlyunderway with constructionexpected to begin in 2006, andcompletion scheduled for 2010.

The new Brightwater WastewaterTreatment Plant will be the firstmembrane plant owned by King

County, as the existing twosewage treatment plants do notuse membrane technology. King

County’s Wastewater TreatmentDivision currently serves 18 cities,16 local sewer agencies and more

than 1.4 million residents inKing, Snohomish and Piercecounties.

Zenon chosen to supply “world’slargest membrane bioreactor”

Zenon’sZeeWeed MBRcombines clarification, aeration, and filtration into oneprocess step. According to Zenon, the processproduces high-quality effluent that “meets or exceeds the world’s most stringent regulations for discharge or reuse”
