Second Grade Math Menu
Week Of: March 30 – April 3
Daily Fact Fluency Practice
o NEW Fact Fluency: Doubles Materials: Paper and pencil
Call out a number between 1 and 10. Students write the doubles fact and the sum. Example: Call out 3. Students write 3 +
3 = 6
o Addition Battle Materials: Deck of cards, *Option: Make three sets of number cards each with the numbers 1-9
Take the jack, queen and king out of the deck of cards. Deal all of the cards to the players. Each player turns over two
cards. Each player adds the two numbers together to find the sum of the two cards. The player with the greatest sum
gets all of the cards. Continue until one person has all of the cards.
**Questions to ask as you play: What strategy did you use to add the two numbers?
NEW Instruction for the week: Addition and Subtraction up to three-digits
The menu below is based on math concepts that the student has not yet covered in math class. At the end of
this menus, you will find information for helping you work with your student on the concept of addition and
subtraction.
Choose at least 3 of the following 6 activities to complete this week.
Is She Correct? Materials:
Paper and pencil Jessica added 267 + 145. She got a sum of 302. Is she correct? If yes, show how you know. If no, show how you know and explain what her mistake was. **Questions to ask What method will you use to solve the problem?
Same or Different Materials:
Paper and pencil Are the two problems solve correctly? What is the same between the two problems? What is different between the two problems below? Write your answers on a piece of paper. 257 257 200 + 50 + 7 +418 +418 400 + 10 + 8 675 600 + 60 + 15 600 + 60 +10 + 5 = 675 **Questions to ask Why do you think that?
The Answer Is…. Materials:
Paper and pencil Only the answer to a three- digit minus three-digit number is written on the board. The answer is 136. What could the problem be? Is there more than one problem that could give you that answer? If so, try to find at least 2 problems that will give you the answer of 136. **Questions to ask as you play What was your strategy to solve?
Solve the following problems
Materials:
Paper and pencil
Solve the following problems. Choose the method you are most comfortable with using.
1. 564 + 371= 2. 802 – 518 = 3. 712 + 59 = 4. 400 – 148 = 5. 615 – 83 =
**Questions to ask as you play What strategy will you use? What do you mean by regrouping?
Race to 100 Materials:
Paper and pencil
Dice
This is a two player game. Each person starts with 500. With each roll you will subtract what you roll from the previous answer. The goal is to get to 100 first. On each roll, you can choose to roll 1 or 2 dice. If you roll 2 dice, you can determine how you want to use the two numbers. For example, if you roll a 3 and a 5. You can subtract 35 or 53. **Questions to ask as you play Are you going to roll one or two dice? Why? What number will you use to subtract?
Deck of Cards Practice Materials:
Deck of Cards
Paper and pencil Choose if you want to play using addition or subtraction. Deal 6 cards to each person. Each person sets up an addition or subtraction problem, depending on what was chosen. Solve the problem. The person with the greatest sum or difference gets a point. Play until one person earns 5 points. **Questions to ask as you play What was your strategy to solve?
REVIEW Activities for the week:
The menu below is based on math concepts that the students has already been exposed to this school year.
Choose at least 2 of the 3 activities to complete this week.
Solve the Problem
Materials:
Pencil or paper
The kids in Ms. Nelson’s class did a survey of all the
second grades to find out about kids’ favorite pets.
Use the chart to help answer the questions below.
2nd Grade Favorite Pets
Pets Number of Kids
Fish 17
Birds 8
Cats 45
Dogs 62
1. How many more kids like dogs than
cats?
2. How many students were asked about
their favorite pets?
**Questions to ask as you play
What is the question asking for?
What is the data?
What is your plan?
Compare If You Dare
Materials:
Pencil or paper
Playing cards (remove the ten, jacks, queens and
kings) Aces will be 1.
This is a two player game. Each person gets 3 cards
and makes a number. Each person writes both
numbers on their piece of paper and writes in the
correct comparison symbol; <,>, or =.
The player with the smallest number earns a point.
The first person to 10 points is the winner.
**Questions to ask as you play
How do you know that is the largest number?
How do you know that is smallest number?

This information is for parents and guardians to support students in NEW learning for the week. Addition & Subtraction TEKS 2.4B(S) Add up to four two digits numbers and subtract two digit numbers using mental strategies and algorithms based on knowledge of place value and properties of operations 2.4C(R) Solve one-step and multi-step word problems involving addition and subtraction within 1,000 using a variety of strategies based on place value, including algorithms 2.4D(R) Generate and solve problem situations for a given mathematical number sentence involving addition and subtraction of whole numbers within 1,000 2.7C(S) Represent and solve addition and subtraction word problems where unknowns may be any one of the terms in the problem Prior Knowledge Students have work with adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. This will be the first time they have worked with three-digit numbers. NOTE: Students have learned ways to add and subtract that maybe different from the way you learned. Please be open if they are using a different method. But, if your child is struggling, use the method you are most comfortable with when you help them with any assignment on adding or subtracting. TEKS TALK
The standard algorithm does NOT need to be mastered until 4th grade. Allow students to use methods shown by their classroom teachers or the methods shown below.
Below are methods students can use to add or subtraction whole with two- or three-digit numbers. Addition Using Counting Strategies Open Number line Students will think flexibly about numbers, use place value and decompose numbers. Addition Using Grouping Strategies Addition grouping strategies will be taught through Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract progression to build conceptual understanding of addition. Some students may want to use picture to solve. Try to encourage one of the methods below.
Addition Subtraction
Using a phone: Open the camera and hold the phone over the QR code Using a computer or tablet: Open the camera and hold the QR code over the camera
Front-end (partial sums) and standard algorithm Subtracting Using Counting Strategies Open Number line Students will think flexibly about numbers, use place value and decompose numbers. Base-10 blocks can be used to model jumps of 10’s and 1’s.
