FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say rejoice” --Philippians 4:4

Dear Family and Friends at Felton Presbyterian Church,

We have had a very active summer as a church this year. Our YouthProgram, led by Uriah and Mary Ann Volinsky, has had road trips, campfires, and Epic Friday events all summer.

Rachel Lockridge and a wonderful group of volunteers held a very success-ful and exciting Vacation Bible School (VBS) this summer. Every parentand kid I have talked to since has said that they really enjoyed the week.

Randy Fujishin, Kanda Whaley, Rachel Lockridge and Henrique Courahave all blessed us with outstanding messages on “Choosing to Celebrate”this summer.

Our worship team and Barbara Lang have led us in worship all summer.Michele Izor was traveling for most of the summer, but she ensured that wehad excellent special music on Sunday mornings.

Welove the people, the mountains and the fact that most folks here love the Lord. Women’s Association

Women’s Association will resume Thursday, September 11, at10 am. Join us for fellowship, refreshments and Bible study.

Missions

Clarita Badua is a wonderful missionary to West Sumatrasupported by FPC. She is a single, amazing, courageous wom-an, a retired Filipina business woman in her 50’s. Her goal isto present a clear testimony of Christ-Messiah to the Muslimsof her community. She lives in Padang and operates her own travel agency and hasbeen managing it alone for 8 years. The national agencies andgovernment have welcomed her contribution to tourism in Su-matra.She is part of the Minangkabau Team composed of both Indo-nesians and Filipinos working in earthquake relief and commu-nity development.Pray for her: for a new visa allowing her to continue her businessFor her new partner for this busy enterpriseFor her health.

Amazon Smile

Do you purchase items from Amazon? If you do, you maydonate 5% of your purchase price to a non-profit organization .

Felton Presbyterian Church is now signed up for donations. Please choose your church to receive this 5% of your purchaseprice. It is exciting to find new ways to raise money for ourchurch. Let’s see how this works. If you have questions, contact Harold or Kanda Whaley or Sandy Thormann.

Children’s Ministry

My name is Malcolm Mackinnon and I will be the interimdirector of children’s ministries while Rachel is away on mater-nity leave.

Originally from England, my wife Donna and I have lived inFelton for three years, where I have been associate pastor atTrinity Bible Church. Much of my ministry is geared towardschildren. I design and present large visual talks aimed athelping kids of all ages engage with and remember Biblelessons.

I am looking forward to working with the team here at FPC -both on Sundays, where we will be studying the life and workof Elisha, and also on Wednesdays at Kids’ Club, where we willbe exploring the parables of Jesus.

Worry

Worry doesn’t prevent disaster; it prevents joy.

Don’t let your worries get the best of you. Remember, Mosesstarted out as a basket case.

From a church bulletin: Don’t let worry kill you….let thechurch help!

Worry can’t change our past or your future, but it can ruin ourpresent.

Philippians 4:6 Don't worry about anything; instead, prayabout everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him forall he has done.

Luke 14:27 (Jesus said)Let your hearts not be troubled. Donot be afraid.

Tom Escott1 Corinthians 10:31

Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatsoever you do,do all to the glory of God.This is the testimony of Tom Escott. He was asked aboutthis Bark article and was very hesitant to draw attention tothe gifts of carpentry he has contributed to FPC.He is the man whose accent reminds one of the Geicocommercial. Besides singing in the choir, Tom has madenumerous contributions to the beauty and usefulness of thechurch property. Who made the benches on the churchpatio? Who made the storage drawers and counter in thecopy room? Who (along with Vern Slinker) constructed thesound booth and the enlarged front platform in the sanctu-ary? The many beautiful crosses that grace our facility? Theframe for the picture near the piano? The small table nearthe organ? It was Tom Escott!

Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might.Ecclesiastes 9:11

ADDRESS CORRECTION REQUESTED

Bobby Mungaven

We lost a friend with the passing of Bobby Mungaven in March. She was a faithful attendee of our Community Dinners. She crocheted many baby booties, stroller blankets and baby caps which were donated to the Pregnancy Resource Centerin Santa Cruz.

Bobby had an interesting life. Born in Holland, she was named after the wise man, Malchior. Later a friend found“Malchoiria” too much of a mouthful and nicknamed her after her bobbed hairstyle. She was Bobby from then on. Herfather was an oil company engineer. Bobby and her mother lived in Indonesia while her father worked on an oil tanker.

At the start of World War II she and her mother were put in a concentration camp. It was there she began to knit. Theywould take unneeded sweaters and unravel them to get yarn. From that humble beginning Bobby became a master ofknitting and crocheting. On her way home after the war, she remembered that the Red Cross gave everyone on the shipsweaters. Since they had been living in a tropical climate for years, they had no warm clothes to face the cold winters .

She married an Englishman named John. John was a commercial artist and moved his family to Canada and ultimately tothe United States in search of work. The Mungavens called the Santa Cruz Mountains their home for many years. Johnpassed away a few years ago. The couple’s two sons survive them.

Bobby was appreciated for her skill at sewing, knitting and other handicrafts. She also sold handmade period doll clothesat Roaring Camp. We at FPC especially appreciate the beautiful useful gifts we were able to donate to the PregnancyResource Center, a local mission supported by this congregation.

Getting to Know You

Hello, Congregation:

It’s me, back again. I couldn’t find anyone tointerview because of theBark deadline, so Idecided the “interviewee” would be ME.

I was adopted three days after my birth inHayward. Before my adoption I was named“Baby Girl Post.” My name changed fromPost to Samson to Nielsen after adoptions, unadoptions and readoptions by new fathers.(I had more fathers than a church), marriages, divorces, remarriages. At age four I was go-ing to school in Los Gatos and graduatedfrom high school there in 1971. I led a dreamlife from age 10 - 17. My dad bred and raisedArabian horses. I competed in horse showsand endurance rides. Once, I was in theGrand Nationals at the Cow Palace.

School landed me a job at Watsonville Hos-pital. Marriage brought us two children. Iwas a stay-at-home mom for 20 years untilmy divorce.

My hobbies include beading, rock collecting, drawing, music, and chiseling bowling balls.I am writing a book entitled “Taking theCake” - a book of poetry written from kinder-garten on. I have two phobias - snakes andheights. I don’t like mean people, raccoons, skunks, gophers or coyotes. My favoritefoods include rice pudding, ice cream andkey lime pie. I love roses and cats. I tend thegarden area near the front of the church.

After the deaths of my mom and sister, I fellapart and found comfort in going to thiswonderful church. The church became thefamily that I lost. There are only twobranches on our family tree. I am trying mybest to be a strong trunk.

I have been a member of this church for 13years. You have helped me be strong in mylife and faith. Until we meet again - God’sblessings each and every day to all of us.

This is your kooky, roving reporter Leslie Nelson

Musings by Michael

In this time of church transition, it is so importantthat we know who our Lord and Savior truly is.

I recently visited another church with an acquaint-ance. Because it had the name of Jesus in thechurch name, I thought it was a Christian church.

I was greeted warmly. I wasn’t given a free loaf ofbread, but hey! Not every church has the gift ofbaking.

I sat down and opened the six-page bulletin, full ofan hour and half of liturgy. Red flags went up inmy spirit. I kept feeling the Holy Spirit cautioningme in parts of the service. Jesus was not men-tioned as Lord and Savior, but rather as teacher andprophet. There were no Bibles in the church.Incorrect scriptures were in the bulletin. TheLord’s Prayer was directed to some kind of skygod referencing Father and Mother. A key sen-tence “Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those whosin against us.” was not part of the prayer.

The pastor stood up and said he had just come backfrom Turkey visiting Muslim temples. I thought tomyself, “Oh, he went to evangelize for Jesus.” Butno, he got evangelized by them. He then held up apair of Muslim prayer beads. He urged the congre-gation to use them to pray to Jesus. He said itwould promote a sense of universal truth and thatthere were many ways to pray to God. He thenheld up an icon of Jesus holding a lotus flower -something to do with Sophia and the universalBuddhist spirit of peace. (After all their Jesus wasalso a Buddhist.) I cannot find that in my scriptures.

Then came communion - not based on my Jesus’death and resurrection but on I-know-not-what. Ascommunion began the worship leader sang a songby the Beatles, “Imagine.”Imagine there is noheaven, imagine there is no hell, etc...I did notpartake.

I left the service feeling very sad. They did notknow my Jesus. My Jesus is the one who died formy sins and rose again on the 3rd day. He is theSon of God. Heis God. Their Jesus was a meta-physical Buddhist. All religions and all life styleslead to God. Jesus was just a teacher and prophetteaching peace. This is a great concept. Whocould be against peace!

1 John 2:22 saysWho is the liar? It is whoeverdenies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is theantichrist - denying the Father and the Son.

I left feeling as if these people were truly lost anddeceived. We must be careful to back up ourbeliefs with scripture. Discernment is vital in ourwalk with Christ. I was not judging these peoplebut rather seeing through the enemy’s deception.Do you know who your Jesus is?

1 Timothy 4:16...Pay close attention to yourselfand to your teaching; persevere in these things.

Matt 16:16...Peter answered, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.

From the Pastor’s Desk(Continued from page 1)

A team of dedicated servants provided a free lunch for ourcommunity each Tuesday at noon. And finally, we endedour three-year discernment process in July by voting tomove to a new and growing Presbyterian denomination.

This is all very exciting and a reason to celebrate. Life isfilled with good times and hard times, difficult circum-stance and blessings, grief and joy, failure and achievement. But the pain and brokenness does not have to define us.

Throughout our lives we can have joy because God loves uswith an everlasting, unconditional love. God has adoptedus and through faith in Jesus Christ, we are His children.God is always with us, is infinitely gracious to us andblesses us with every spiritual blessing in heaven.

And God wants us to “enter into the celebration of Hislavish gift-giving by the hand of His beloved Son.”(Ephesians 1:6 inThe Message). God is the most joyfulbeing in all the universe and God wants His joy to be in usso that our joy may be full and overflow (John 15:11).

I hope and pray, as we move into the fall season andcontinue our Christ-centered ministries to our community, that we will be a church that reflects God’s abundant joy inlife.

Try this today! Ask God to fill you with His joy today andthen choose to celebrate what God is doing in your life andin the lives of those who are a part of your church.

Yours in Christ,

Ed SnedekerPastor

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control.
