Christian Ethics- Lying # 3
In our last article we were looking at passages that spoke of the punishment that God deemed worthy of those who lie, but if there was no other example in the Bible except that of Acts 5:1-10, that should be sufficient to make us understand that God regards lying as a great evil. When Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit about the money they were giving to the apostles they were immediately struck dead! God certainly did not re-gard their lie as an innocent thing. And how do you think God regarded the lies told by those two men who testified against Jesus in an effort to have Him put to death, Mark 14:58? Lying Is Wrong Because it Violates the “Golden Rule” Jesus taught His disciples, “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12). When we go shopping we want people to be honest with us. We want to know if the product that we are buying is any good. Will it do what I want it to do? When we hire some-one to repair or build something for us we want to know “Will he use the best material so it will be the quality I want?” We want our children to always be honest with us and tell the truth. Therefore we need to always be honest with other people.
Lying Is Contrary to Our Nature By this we mean that lying is contrary to the way that God created us. Man is not a born liar. Lying is some-thing that we learn. Now a person may lie so much so of-ten, that it seems that lying is just his natural tendency, but lying is not natural, it is against our nature. The polygraph (a machine designed to detect if a person is lying or telling the truth. When a man lies he tends to perspire more, his breathing rate increases and his blood pressure may become slightly elevated. This is because lying is a shock to our nervous system. When we knowingly lie it is contrary to our conscience and the result is a change in these bodily actions. Finally we need to understand that lying will also destroy our reputation. Once you tell a lie it become diffi-cult to ever convince someone that you are telling the truth. Remember the fable of the Boy Who Cried Wolf? The first time he cried “Wolf,” the people came running to help. The second time the same thing happened. How-ever on neither occasion was there any danger. There was no wolf. The young boy did that just to amuse himself with seeing the people rushing out to help him. Then when the wolf really did come and he cried out for help, no one came. Why? They refused to come because they believed that the boy was only lying again. It is a great help and a great comfort when a person can speak and people will accept what he says as the truth without having to go on the computer to do a fact check to learn if he is telling the truth. But once you tell a lie then forever after people will think, “He lied once, he might be lying again.”
