St. Vincent de Paul Society St. Anthony Conference
In the Sunday Gospel today, Zacchaeus accepts our Lord joyfully; and the sign of his acceptance is his open house and his resolution to give
half of his goods to the poor. Through your gifts to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you also show your acceptance of our Lord by joyfully sharing your goods with your neighbor who is hungry, often hopeless, alone and frightened. Our next food pantry will be November 10. We thank you for any non-perishable grocery items and/or monetary gifts that you give. We are serving 45 families at this time. The families always are thankful for what we are able to help them with. Please have the person in need who is living within our church boundaries call our Parish office phone at 815-469-3750 ext. 114 and leave a message. The call will be answered as soon as possible. The St. Vincent DePaul Donation Truck will be in our church parking lot, on November 16, during the 5:00 pm. Mass, and on Sunday, November 17 during the
morning Masses. The truck will be leaving at 12:00 pm on Sunday.

The sacrament of confession
a. Must be received before receiving
Communion by anyone guilty of a mortal sin
since his last confession.
b. Is entirely unnecessary if you privately and
sincerely confess your sins to God.
c. Must be received by all Catholic adults at
least once a year. (This is one of the six
precepts of the Church.)
d. Was done away with by Vatican II, except
in cases of the three sins which “cry out to
God for vengeance”: murder, adultery, and
sexism.
e. None of the above.
Last Week’s Answer:
c. Is the same as serious sin; only the words
are different.
In today's Gospel, we hear the story of a tax collector who
changed his ways after his encounter with Jesus. To under-
stand what happens in this story, you need to know that in
Jesus' time, tax collectors often cheated people by collect-
ing more money from people than was required to pay the
tax. Zacchaeus is described as a chief tax collector and a
wealthy man, probably because he cheated many people.
When people grumbled that Jesus was staying in the
house of a sinner, Zacchaeus promised to pay back, four-
fold, the money he had wrongly taken from others. Jesus
responded that Zacchaeus had found salvation. This story
reminds us of the Sacrament of Penance in which we cele-
brate God's gift of forgiveness.
Question for Children: Jesus showed that He loved
Zacchaeus by having supper with him. How does Jesus
show His love for you?
Question for Adults: Jesus saw Zaccheaus as he was –
mistakes and all. What masks, if any, do you hide behind
so others won't see who you really are? Who do you trust
to see your true self?
Catechist Corner
Who instituted the sacrament of Penance?
Jesus Himself instituted the sacrament of Pen-
ance when He showed Himself to His apostles
on Easter day and commanded them, "Receive
the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any,
they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any,
they are retained" (Jn 20:22a-23). Nowhere did
Jesus express more beautifully what happens
in the sacrament of Penance than in the
parable of the Prodigal Son: We go astray, we
are lost and can no longer cope. Yet our Father
waits for us with great, indeed, infinite longing;
He forgives us when we come back; He takes
us in again, forgives our sins. Jesus Himself
forgave the sins of many individuals; it was
more important to Him than working miracles.
He regarded this as the great sign of the dawn-
ing of the kingdom of God, in which all wounds
are healed and all tears are wiped away. Jesus
forgave sins in the power of the Holy Spirit, and
He handed that power on to His apostles. We
fall into the arms of our heavenly Father when
we go to a priest and confess. (YOUCAT ques-

annual week-long celebration of the
Catholic Church in the United States

priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Every week, some treasures from our tradition are shared
here. Where does all this history come from? The history of
God’s people of prayer is always coming to light, mostly
because scholars have dedicated their lives to research.
They translate and ponder prayers and songs; explore the
places used for worship; look at the vessels, books, and
vestments; and read works from legal documents to letters
and diaries. In the 1930s, Hitler’s rush to arm Germany
closed seminaries as priests and seminarians alike were
drafted into service.
One professor, Father Josef Jungman, forced from his
classroom, spent the war years in an Austrian library. His
careful work disclosed much of what we know of the history
of the Mass. His great work, The Mass of the Roman Rite,
describes the evolution of Eucharistic celebration and
inspired generations of scholars to explore a tradition
surprisingly rich and varied. It was said of him that he had a
command of the past that cast new light on the present, and
opened up a clear direction to the future. His contributions
to the Second Vatican Council helped shape the way that we
worship today. At the end of his life, in 1975, his studies
completed, he told a friend that he was waiting patiently for
the Lord’s knock at the door to take him to the heavenly
banquet.

A GREAT AND GLORIOUS GOD
Our readings today ponder two powerful truths: God is
infinitely greater than we are; and God provides every kind of
help so we can discover and share in God’s glory. The reading
from Wisdom reminds us that we are tiny compared to “the
LORD of the whole universe.” Nevertheless, God preserves
and nurtures us out of perfect love. If we feel tiny, weak, and
sinful compared to God, we are blessed! God’s greatness
sustains and strengthens us. Saint Paul encourages the
Thessalonian Christians with the same message. He reminds
them that God alone makes the Church holy. He prays that
everything they undertake will be for the glory of God.
Luke’s Gospel shows us what this looks like in real life:
Zacchaeus, feeling small and excluded, looks for Jesus. Jesus
finds him and gives him the strength he needs to repent of his
sins and glorify God.

The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica-Nov. 9th Christians first met in homes to hear Jesus’ teachings and to celebrate the Eucharist. When the Christians were no longer persecuted for their faith, they built beautiful churches. Some-time before the fourth century, a palace owned by a noble Roman family named Laterani had been built. It became the property of the Emperor Con-stantine. Constantine had rec-ognized Christianity as the re-ligion of the empire, and he
donated to the Church the palace and other buildings on the site. This became Rome’s oldest church. It was given the title Basilica of the Savior, but later was dedi-cated to John the Baptist and called St. John Lateran. St. John Lateran was the home of the popes—the center of the Catholic world for many years. Twenty-eight popes are buried there. Although our pope now lives at the Vatican and presides at St. Peter’s basilica, St. John Lateran is considered his cathedral as the bishop of Rome. The dedication of this basilica is a happy occasion for the Church because it reminds us of our beginnings, our unity. It stands as a monument to God and all that God does through the Church.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we are called to invite, inform, inspire and ignite the community in our faith journey by fostering stewardship through sharing of our gifts of time, talent and treasure. We are further called to share our faith through active evangelization and charitable outreach.
