The 2015 Fayette County Fair has come and gone. Wow! What a week it was and I thank every-
one who contributed to the fantastic week. Also, congratulations to everyone for their success.
The 4-H year is coming to an end so I would like to remind everyone it is that time of the year in
which we must close one set of books and look to starting the next. Also now is the time to start
talking to your friends about joining 4-H. Invite them to a club meeting to check out what 4-H has to
offer and encourage them to join by completing and returning the paper form of the enrollment form
to the Extension Office by December 1. Paper copies of the enrollment are needed for only new
members. Re-enrolling members may do so after September 15 using 4hOnline.com. More infor-
mation about re-enrolling can be found inside the newsletter. As I’ve said before if you have any
questions, please feel free to contact me by calling the Extension Office. Normal business hours
are 8 am-4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

The 2015 Fayette County Hall of Fame re-cipient is Norma Kerr of West Union. Norma started 4-H as a Clayton County member in the Garnavillo Farmerettes club. Due to her family moving, she selected not to continue with 4-H as a youth. In 1971, Norma be-came one of the leaders of the Clermont Country Cousins club, meeting in the Cler-mont area. She continued as a leader for the next 15 years ending her career in 1986. From 1978-1988, Norma served as the
Fayette County 4-H Program Aide, (similar to today’s job of County Youth Coordinator) with Fayette County Extension. Norma and her late husband Don raised 3 children. Daughters, Dean-na and Barbara were 9 year 4-H members of the Clermont Country Cousins while son David was a 9 year member of the Clermont Com-ets. All three children were involved in 4-H, with their highlight being showing registered Holsteins. Judging communications, clothing, foods, home improvement and visu-al arts over the years, and still to this day, a person will see Norma judging at county fairs in Northeast Iowa which has become a favorite spring and summer activity of Norma’s. While judging, she enjoys visit-ing with the youth, seeing their faces light up as she announces their ribbon placing and watching the youth progress year to year as they challenge themselves, experiencing larger and more challenging pro-jects. 4-H has always been a big part of the Kerr family as there has been several generations involved. Norma continues to judge and is a strong supporter of 4-H events held in Fayette and neighboring counties at-tending club and county wide fundraisers. Norma was honored at the 2015 Iowa State Fair on Sunday, August 23rd where she received her award.

Dear Clover Kids,
It’s almost September and we will start to see colors
changing along the tree lines. A few months back while
attending a “Grow Up Wild” training the following activity
was shared so I encourage parents to create a “Color
Coded Nature Walk and Hunt” for their children to com-
plete as they enjoy the great outdoors. First off, par-
ents must paint the inside of an egg carton various colors,
using craft or tempra paint. Let dry. Hand out to your
children and explain that you would like for them to find
things in nature that matches the colors inside the car-
ton. Give them a designated amount of time to find the
objects and call the children back together to share what
was found. Although some items of all the colors may not
be found, use words to encourage the children to keep
looking or explain to them not all colors may be found at
this time of the year. What a fun outdoor activity that
not only is good in the fall but at different times of the
year. Keep track how many items were found and the
season in which they were found. This is an activity that
can be recycled over and over for years to come. Need
egg cartons, contact Michele.
An example of what the egg carton will look like. Note this can
be made using an ordinary egg carton that holds a dozen eggs.
Just won’t have as many colors.

All kids like Oobleck so here is an easy recipe on how to make
your own. This recipe was found at http://
littlebinsforlittlehands.com/apple-oobleck-science-experiment-
made-apple-sauce/ and will be used throughout the upcoming 4-H
year at afterschool programs throughout Fayette County
Apple Oobleck
Supplies Needed:
apple sauce
cornstarch
cinnamon
bowl and spoon for mixing
cookie tray or pie plate
Measure roughly 1 cup of cornstarch and a 1/2 cup of applesauce
into a bowl. Add a generous sprinkle of cinnamon and mix! Using
hands transfer mixed oobleck to a pie plate. Adding extra corn-
starch will keep oobleck a bit firmer, making it a bit less slimy.
Congratulations on the great display of exhibits in the
Clover Kids booth at the Fayette County Fair and also
to those who participated in the clothing, communica-
tion, foods fair, pet/small animal and bucket bottle
judging. I look forward to watching each of you grow
as we move into a new 4-H year and remind you that
now is the time to invite your friends to join 4-H as
the new year is fast approaching and begins October 1.
