Vincent Van Gogh and
LS Lowry

VINCENT VAN GOGH
Vincent Van Gogh was born on the
30th March 1853 at a time when
painters were experimenting
with new modern methods of painting.
VINCENT VAN GOGH
He began to learn drawing skills at
the age of 13, which soon grew
into a great interest in
painting and art and a desire to paint the things
around him.
VINCENT VAN GOGH
When he was a young man, his brother,
Theo, suggested that he should become a professional artist, though he found it very difficult to sell
his brightly coloured paintings.
VINCENT VAN GOGH
This type of painting was called ‘Expressionism’ and it has now
made him one of the most popular artists of all time. The next picture is one of his most famous paintings called ‘Starry
night’.

He is also famous for his many painting of sunflowers,
which was one of his favourite
subjects.
Because he was one of the first
artists to use the method called
‘Expressionism’ and because his
paintings are very, very popular
nowadays.

Van Gogh was never famous in his own lifetime, yet now his paintings are sold for many millions of pounds.
Vincent had an older brother who died at birth. His name was also Vincent van Gogh.

Laurence Stephen Lowry
was born in Stretford, near
Manchester, on the 1st November
1887.
LS LOWRY
He had an interest in drawing from a very early age, but it wasn’t until the age of 21 that he began to draw and paint street scenes from the town of Pendlebury where he lived.

These became very famous for their ‘matchstick men’ style as shown in these two pictures ..

His work is not only interesting to look at, but it also gives us lots of information about what life was like in England in this period.
LS Lowry was famous because of his unique
style of painting called
‘Matchstick men’.

Lowry continued his job for a while as a rent collector even when he became famous.
He was a vey good artist who was able to paint much more detailed paintings than his ‘matchstick men’ style.
