Inthiscoursewewillexplorehowconceptsfromrhetoriccanhelpusunderstandthe2016PresidenAalElecAon.Althoughtheword“rhetoric”someAmesreferstoemptyordecepAvespeech,forcenturiesrhetoricwasahighlyrespectedcourseofstudythattaughtspeakersandwritershowtocommunicateeffecAvelyonmulApletopicsandinvarioussituaAons.Inthiscourse,then,wewillmovebackandforthbetweenclassicalunderstandingsofrhetoricandthecurrentpresidenAalcampaign.Alongwithwebsites,speeches,andarAclesonthepresidenAalcampaign,wewillreadprimaryandsecondarytextsinclassicalrhetoric,scholarlyarAclesonpresidenAalrhetoric,andpastexamplesofpresidenAalspeechesanddebates.
