I nOctober,theDepartmentofCivilandEnvironmentalEngineeringwasvisitedbytwoABETaccreditationteams.Oneteamfocusedonthecivilengineeringundergraduateprogramwhiletheotherteamfocusedontheenvironmentalengineering

undergraduateprogram.ABETaccreditation,whichtheprogramsundergoevery6years,isveryimportanttothedepartment,ourstudents,employersofourgraduates,andotherconstituencies.Accreditationinvolvesacontinuousimprovementprocess,aswellasdocumentation,whichensuresourcurriculaincivilandenvironmentalengineeringarerelevantandmeettheexpectationsoftheprofession.ThisevaluationisanexhaustiveandcomprehensiveprocessandthereforeIwishtoexpressmysinceregratitudetoallofthefacultyandstaffwhoworkeddiligentlytoprepareforthevisit.Theaccreditationteamsexamineaprogram’scurriculum,admissionprocesses,advisingprocedures,assessmentprocesses,andsamplesofstudentwork.Programsmustdemonstrateachievementoftheirstatedobjectivesandoutcomes.

(STMD)withtime‐varyingfrequencyanddampingpropertycanovercomethislimitation.Figure3(a)illustratestheschematicmodelofaframestructurecontrolledbyanSTMDunderseismicexcitation.Figure3(b)showsthattheSTMDcanimprovethereductionofthepeakofthedisplacementspectraby30%comparedtoanoptimalTMDand(c)showsthatthepeakreductionoftheaccelerationspectraisimprovedby25%.

CoupledDynamicsModelingandControlofOffshoreFloatingWindTurbinesOffshore loatingwindturbines(OFWTs)exposedtocoupledaero‐hydro‐servodynamicsexhibitcomplexdynamiccharacteristicsandsufferfromsigni icantnonlinearvibrations.Theexcessivevibrationcompromisesthepoweroutputandcausesfatiguedamage,instabilityandevencollapseofoffshore loatingwindturbines(OFWTs).Therefore,itisessentialtocontroltheexcessivevibrationoftheOFWTs.DynamiccharacteristicsoftheOFWTsundervariousmarineenvironmentalconditionsaremodeledusingthestate‐of‐the‐artbladeelementmomentum(BEM)theoryandthepotentiallowtheory.Thecontroltechniquesdevelopedfornonlinearsystemsare

utilizedtopreventtheexcessivevibrationanddamageofOFWTsundermulti‐hazards.Figure5illustratestheoffshorewindturbinesandtheschematiccontrolmodel.

A SCEatLSUhasbeenbusyduringthespringandfallsemestersof2015withbi‐monthlystudentchaptermeetings,recruitingevents,preparingfortheDeepSouthRegionalcompetition,attendingcommunityserviceevents,andholdinganelectionforthe2016studentchapterof icers.ThisyearthechapterhaswelcomedguestspeakersfromCrestIndustries,SEMSInc.,BASF,SJBGroup,LLC,Terracon,JonesandCarter,theASCEBatonRougebranch,Kiewit,GeoEngineers,Volkert,andASCECOPRI.Topicsdiscussedinthemeetingsincludeethics,currentcivilprojects,designchallenges,careerpaths,andprofessionallicensure.

ASCEatLSUhasattendedvariousmemberrecruitmentevents,includingtheStudentInvolvementFairandEngineeringTigerConnections.Theseeventsprovidestudentswithinformationon

thewidevarietyoforganizationsthatareoncampus.Students

hadtheopportunitytotalkwithcurrentof icers,learnaboutASCE,andjointhechapter.ThesteelbridgeandconcretecanoeteamshavebeenpreparingfortheDeepSouthRegionalcompetitionthatwillbehostedbyMcNeeseStateUniversityinMarch2016.Duringthisfallsemester,theteamshavefocusedondesigning,analyzing,andfundraising.Bothteamsareincorporatingimprovementsintotheirdesignsandarelookingforwardtothefabricationphasesoftheirbridgeandcanoeduringthespringsemester.Bigthankstoalldonorsandsponsors,pastandpresent,fortheirdonationsandsupport.StudentinvolvementintheLSUandBatonRougecommunitycontinuestobeanimportantgoalforthestudentchapterofASCEatLSU.OnMarch28th,chaptermembersvolunteeredwithGeauxBIGBatonRougeinordertoimproveourBatonRougecommunity.ASCEhelpedstripandrepainttheeavesaroundawoman’s

homeandhelpedcleanoutdebrisandovergrowthinherbackyard.ChaptermembersalsoworkedtobeautifyLSU'scampusandlearnedaboutsustainabilityattheserviceeventforSpringGreeningDayonApril24th.InconjunctionwiththeLouisianaWaterEnvironmentAssociation(LWEA),bothstudentchaptersteamedupforacommunityserviceeventtocleanuptheLSUlakes.AtthefalleventonOctober11th,atotalof24studentsparticipatedinremovingdebrisandtrasharoundthelakesandthesurroundingareas.

T heStudentChapteroftheInstituteofTransportationEngineersatLSUheldtwogeneralmeetingsthissemester.Inthe irstmeeting,Mr.PhilJones,LADOTDDeputyAssistantSecretaryforInter‐modalTransportation,talkedabouttheroleofmulti‐modaltransportationinLouisianaandhowtheDepartmentofTransportationandDevelopmentsupportstheStateairports,ports,waterways,railroads,andpublictransit.Afterhearingfromourspeaker,studentsparticipatedinatraf icbowldemoorganizedbytheof icers.Prizesweregiventothewinningteam.Inthesecondmeeting,theStudentChapterorganizedapaneldiscussionwithprofessionalsintheareaoftraf icengineering.Thegoalofthepanelwastounderstandwhattraf icengineeringisaboutandgive

D r.ChaoSunjoinedtheDepartmentofCivilandEnvironmentalEngineeringatLouisianaStateUniversityasanassistantprofessorinAugust2015.HeholdsaB.S.degree(2006)withhonorsfromtheCivilEngineeringDepartmentatShanghaiJiaotongUniversityandaM.S.degree(2009)fromCivilEngineeringDepartmentatTongjiUniversity,Shanghai,China.HeearnedhisPh.D.fromtheCivilandEnvironmentalEngineeringDepartmentatRiceUniversityin2013.Upongraduation,heworkedasapostdoctoralresearcherattheDynamicsandSensingLabatRiceUniversity.ThenhejoinedINTECSEAInc.WorleyParsonsGroupasaSeniorEngineerfocusingonhydrodynamicandstructuralanalysisofoffshoreloatingsystems(Semi‐submersible,TensionLegPlatform,Mooring,Tendon,Riseretc.).Dr.Sun’sresearchinterestisprimarilymotivatedtomodel,predictandsensethecomplexdynamiccharacteristicsofcivil(primarilycoastalandoffshore)infrastructuressubjectedtoseveremarineenvironmentaleffectsincludingwind,stormsurges,waves,currents,seismicexcitationsandiceloadings.Hisresearchobjectiveistodetectandpreventmulti‐hazardsinduceddamageandfailureofcoastalandoff‐shorestructures.Hisspeci icareasincludecomplexdynamic(aero‐hydro‐servo)modeling,sensingandvibrationcontrolofoffshore loatingwindturbinesandoilplatforms,energyharvestingfromambientvibrationandoceanwaves, luidstructureinteraction,andmitigationofvortexinducedvibrations(VIVs)ofrisers.Hisparticularexpertiseisinnonlineardynamics,sensing,vibrationcontrol,hydrodynamics,CFDandFiniteElementanalysis.NonlinearDynamicsModelingandVibrationControlManyrealstructures,i.e.acantileverbeamorapendulum,canberepresentedbyaDuf ingsystem(withcubicnonlinearity)whenthestructuralgeometricnonlinearityisconsidered.Anytimewhenthenonlinearityisinvolved,thestructurewillexhibit

complicateddynamiccharacteristics,likebifurcationsandchaoticbehaviors.Numericalandexperimentalresultsindicatethatacombinationofanadaptivependulumtunedmassdamper(APTMD)andanonlineartunedmassdamper(NTMD)caneffectivelysuppressthebifurcation.Fig.1illustratestheschematicmodelofaprimarynonlinearstructurewithanAPTMDandanNTMD.Figure2(a)showsthatthehighamplitudebifurcationbranchcanbesuppressedsigni icantlybytheAPTMD.Figure2(b)illustratestheoccurrenceofajumpphenominonwhenanimpactisappliedtotheprimarynonlinearsystemand(c)showsthatthejumpcanbesuppressedwhentheAPTMDisreleased.

SeismicProtectionUsingaSmartTunedMassDamper(STMD) Tunedmassdampers(TMDs)havebeenprovedeffectiveinreducingstructuralresponsesunderexternalexcitationswithnarrowbandwidthfrequencycharacteristics,likewindloadingsorperiodicmachineloadings.Butfornon‐stationaryexcitationslikeearthquakes,thereductioneffectivenessoftheTMDwillbecompromised.Asmarttunedmassdamper

Student chapter update: ITE at LSU

T hissemester,UnitedStatesCongressmanGarretGravesofLouisiana’s6thDistrictspoketotheseniorsinCE4750‐ProfessionalIssuesandConceptDesigninCivilEngineering,providinginsightonpublicpolicyandhowitinvolvestheCivilEngineeringprofession.

CongressmanGraveshasauniqueperspectiveonawiderangeofcivilengineeringandinfrastructureIssues,havingservedastheGovernor’sadviseronCoastalProtectionandRestorationforsixyearspriortobeingelectedtotheU.S.HouseofRepresentativesin2014.AlsohecurrentlyservesontheHouseTransportationCommittee,helpinghimbetterservethe6thDistrictrelativetothemultitudeoftransportationrelatedchallengesthroughouttheDistrict.

TheCongressmanspokeofthedevelopmentoftheCoastalProtectionandRestorationAuthorityinstategovernment,whichhehelpedcreateaftercominginatthebeginningoftheJindalAdministration.HeemphasizedthemagnitudeoftheproblemofcoastallandlossinLouisianaanddiscussedtheimportanceofimplementingtheapprovedLouisianaCoastalMasterPlan.This50‐year,$50billionprogramwillprovidegreatopportunitiesforalltechnicalprofessionals,especiallyCivilEngineers.CongressmanGravesthenturnedhisattentiontoTransportation‐relatedissues.HespokeofthecriticalneedsthroughoutthestatebutespeciallyintheBatonRougemetroarea,whichhastheworsttraf icproblemsforacommunityofitssizeintheUnitedStates.Hetalkedaboutpotentialfundingopportunitiesandobstacles.Healsoencouragedthestudentstostayengagedinthepolicysideoftransportationissuesastheybecomeprofessionalssincetheirinputwillbecriticaltoimplementingsuccessfulsolutions.

Techniques,suchasinfraredimagery,geophysicalmethods,visualsmoke/steamandsettlementobservations,andland illgasmonitoring,arereadilyavailabletodetectelevatedtemperatures,butthespatialandtemporalvariationofland illgas,temperature,leachatemigration,andsettlementofelevatedtemperatureeventsandtheunderlyingmechanismsarelacking.Asaresult,acasestudywasusedtoidentifythefollowingland illindicatorsaftertheonsetoflocalizedelevatedtemperatures:(1)changesinland illgascomposition,(2)measurableelevatedgasandleachatepressures(Figure2a),(3)increasedleachatemigrationandvolume(Figure2b),and(4)slopemovementandsettlement(Figure3).Withtheaforementionedindicators,aconceptualmodelwasproposedtoclassifyaMSWland illinto ivezonestodeterminethetransitionfromnormaloperatingareastotheelevatedtemperatureregion,whichisimportantforpublichealth,environmentalsafety,andappropriateresponsebyland illpersonnel,irstresponders,andregulatoryagencies.

PATRICK F. TAYLOR HALL RENNOVATION UPDATE

InFall2014,oneyearago,theLSUCollegeofEngineeringbrokegroundonthelargestbuildingprojectinLSU'shistory.Sincethentherehasbeensigni icantprogressontheexpansionandrenovationofPatrickF.TaylorHall(PFT).Justrecently,theprecastpanelsstartedgoingup.Soonafter,a“ToppingOut”ceremonywasheldtocelebrateanimportantmilestoneintheproject:theinstallmentofthelastbeam,signedbyfacultyandstaff.Excitingthingsarehappeninghere!So,what’snextfortheproject?ThenorthsideofPatrickF.TaylorHallisslatedtobecompletebyJuly2016,withtheChemicalEngineeringadditionbeingsubstantiallycompletebythattime.Atthatpoint,theDepartmentofCivilandEnvironmentalEngineeringwillrelocatetothenorthsideofthebuilding,asrenovationonthesouthsideofPFTHallshouldbeginthatSeptember.TheentireprojectisscheduledtobecompletedinNovember2017.Tocheckoutmorephotosandinformationabouttheproject,visitwww.eng.lsu.edu/about/pft

D r.NavidJafarirecentlyjoinedtheLSUDepartmentofCivil&EnvironmentalEngineeringasanassistantprofessorinAugust2015.Dr.JafariholdsaB.S.withhonors(2010)incivilengineeringfromtheUniversityofMemphis.HeearnedhisM.S.(2011)andPh.D.(2015)ingeotechnicalengineeringfromtheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana‐Champaign.Dr.Jafari’sresearchexpertiseliesattheintersectionofcoastal,environmental,andgeotechnicalengineeringandsupportsLSU’sstrategicmissionofcoastalandenvironmentalsustainabilityintheMississippiRiverdelta.Hisprimaryareasofstudyincoastalgeotechnicsincluderesiliencyofstormsurgeand loodprotectioninfrastructure,aswellasmarshcreation,erosion,andsubsidence.Hisspeci icareasofinterestingeoenvironmentalengineeringincludedesignofwastecontainmentsystems,sustainablemanagementofindustrialwastes,andthedevelopment,migration,andcontainmentofelevatedland illtemperatures.COASTALINFRASTRUCTURETwo‐dimensional(2‐D)seepagemodelscanunder‐predictlandsidehydraulicgradientsunderlandsideexcavationsandconvexleveebendconditions.Thestate‐of‐practiceforexaminingleveeand loodwallseepageis2‐D initeelementanalyses(FEA)and/oranalyticalsolutionsproposedintheU.S.ArmyCorpsofEngineers(USACE)designmanualsEM1110‐2‐1901andEM1110‐2‐1913.The2‐DFEAcalculatesupliftpressuresand lowassumingleveegeometry,soilstratigraphy,boundaryconditions,andexcavationsarein initelywide.However,urbanleveesandloodwallsareconstructedtoaccommodatenaturalrivermeandersandcoastlines.The3‐DmodelofShermanIslandleveeinFigure1indicates that concave levee bends diverge seepageleadingto lowerverticalhydraulicgradientscomparedto2Dplanestrainseepagemodels.Theanalysesalsoshowconvexbends,e.g.,nearStation525,yieldgradientsgreaterthan2Dvalueswhiletheverticalgradientsapproachthe2Dvaluewhentheleveeisstraight(closeproximitytoStation535).The

outcomeoftheresearchalsoallowsforaxisymmetricseepagemodelscanbeusedtoevaluate3Dverticalhydraulicgradientsforconvexleveebends.Inthefuture,Dr.JafariwillevaluatetheperformanceofLouisiana’sleveeand loodwallinfrastructureforwave‐inducederosionandsubsidence.

VoyiadjisisalsotherecipientoftheLouisianaSectionASCECivilEngineeringWallofFameAward.TorecognizethoseindividualswhohavemadeoutstandingcontributionstoourCivilEngineeringProfession,theLouisianaSectionASCEhasestablishedtheLouisianaSectionASCECivilEngineeringWallofFame.ThiselitegroupofCivilEngineerswithintheLouisianaSectionwasof iciallycreatedinSeptember2002aspartoftheASCE150thAnniversary.

DiscoveriesforSustainableDeltaicCoasts.TheperiodofawardisOctober1,2015throughSeptember30,2019andisexpectedtototal$1,199,154.Dr.MicheleBarbatofromtheLSUDepartmentofCivilandEnvironmentalEngineering,incollaborationwitharesearchteamfromtheUniversityofSouthCarolinaatColumbia,hasbeenawardedaresearchgrantfromtheNationalScienceFoundation(NSF)fortheprojectentitled“CollaborativeResearch:EngineeredEarthMasonryforAffordableSeismicResistantLow‐RiseBuildings”.Thisawardof$164,983willenableDr.Barbato’sresearchgrouptodevelopanovelandhigh‐qualityreinforcedearthmasonryforseismicresistantlow‐risebuildings.Throughengineering,sustainableandlocallyappropriatebutbrittleun iredearthmasonrywillbetransformedintoaradicallystrongerandmoreductilesystembyusingnon‐biodegradablerecycledplasticiberscombinedwithinternalsteelreinforcement.Thisnewaffordable,sustainable,high‐qualityandhazard‐resistantconstructionsystemwillbeessentialtotacklerisinghousingcosts,createjobs,andprovidesafeshelterinhazard‐proneareas.

Dr. George Z. Voyiadjis ELECTED TO the PRESTIGIOUS Distinguished member of the asce

L SUBoydProfessorGeorgeZ.VoyiadjiswasrecentlynamedaDistinguishedMemberoftheAmericanSocietyofCivilEngineers,orASCE.Sincethesociety’sfoundingin1852,only649ASCEmembershavebeenelectedtoreceivethishonor.Voyiadjiswasrecognizedforhiscontributionstomulti‐scalemodelingofmaterialstoaddressproblemsinhighenergyimpact,damageofstructuresandinstabilities,andfordevelopingasustainedresearcheffortinpredictingthebehaviorofmaterialsinstructures.HereceivedtheawardattheASCEAnnualConventioninNewYork,N.Y.inOctober2015.Someofhisnotablecontributionsincludeleadingajointeffortfrom1986‐1989ontheanalysisoftheruptureoftheSpaceShuttleChallenger’sfueltank.Heproposedanddevelopednumericalmodelsandsimulationsofstructuresconsideringdamageevolutionandhelpedotherresearchersandindustriesachieveabetterunderstandingofastructure’sbehavior.HeiscurrentlyaBoydprofessor,oneofthehighestdistinctionsatLSUforexceptionalscholarship,serviceanddedicationtothe ield,universityandstudents.Inadditionto41yearsofteaching,Voyiadjishaswrittenbooksincluding,"AdvancesinDamageMechanics:MetalsandMetalMatrixCompositeswithanintroductiontoFabricTensors."

Inadditiontohisprojectcontributions,Voyiadjishasimpactedthedisciplinethroughdevelopingconstitutivemodelsforvariousmaterialsandstructures.Healsoholdstwopatentsonfendersforpierandbridgeprotectionagainstvesselcollision.HisachievementshaveearnedhimhonorsincludingASCE’s2008NathanM.NewmarkMedal.Voyiadjisholdsabachelor’sdegreeincivilengineeringfromAinShamsUniversityinCairo,Egypt,aMasterofSciencedegreefromtheCaliforniaInstituteofTechnologyandDoctorofEngineeringSciencedegree,orD.Eng.Sc.,fromColumbiaUniversity.

Dr.AymanOkeil,incollaborationwiththeLouisianaTransportationResearchCenter(LTRC),receivedagrantfromtheNationalScienceFoundationtointroduceFieldMonitoringandMeasurements(FMM)intotheCEundergraduatecurriculum.Theresearchteam(VJGopu(PI),R.Seals(co‐PI)andA.M.

Okeil(co‐PI))willworkondevelopingandintegratingspecialFMMmodulesintocurrentlyofferedcoursesinLouisianauniversities.Thedevelopedmoduleswillbetransportableandtestedinfourotherout‐of‐stateinstitutionsthathavecommittedtopartneringwiththeprojectteamonthisendeavor.Thegoalistopreparefutureengineerswithknowledge,comprehension,andanabilitytoapplytheuseofFMMsystemsanddata.Thetotalgrantamountis$337,312.

CEEProfessorClintWillson,alongwithwifeKayWillsonandoneoftheirsons,isparticipatinginaFaculty‐in‐ResidenceprogramhereontheLSUcampus.AccordingtoLSUResidentialLife,thisprogramencourages“structuredout‐of‐classroominteractionbetweenstudentsandfacultytoseamlesslyblendstudent

learninganddevelopmentinsideandoutsidetheclassroom.”Dr.Willsonandhisfamilywillspendanentireacademicyearlivinginanon‐campusapartment,minglingwithstudentsandcreatinglastingmemories.

Dr. George Z.
