Walk Now for Autism Speaks

On an early October morning, the sisters of the Theta Nu Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta, along with thousands of others who are passionate about finding a cure for autism, traveled to the zMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina for the 10th Carolinas annual Walk Now for Autism. Despite the chilly weather, the event was filled with high spirits and positive attitudes from all

October 27, 2012 participants who attended the event. With Theta Nu chapter and some alumni present, we were ready to serve the autistic community that we support annually through various fundraisers, awareness efforts and service efforts both on- and off Elon's campus. After a morning filled with fundraising, catching up with friends, and much entertainment, we are

proud to announce that the Theta Nu Chapter was able to raise $8,770 to go toward research and support for Autism Speaks, Alpha Xi Delta's national philanthropy. We, as a chapter, look forward to continue to spread awareness about this pervasive developmental disorder and to serve the autistic community as best as we can.

Parents Weekend

This 2012 Parents Weekend was a great time to be both a Phoenix and a sister of Alpha Xi Delta at Elon University. Parents of many Theta Nu sisters came to Burlington for a weekend of fun, family and enjoying each other’s company. This year, our chapter had a few fun events planned for the incoming families of our wonderful sisters.

On Saturday September 29th, the Theta Nu chapter of Alpha Xi Delta had a tailgate planned to welcome back sisters’ parents to our incredible

campus; however, due to an unfortunate bout of rain that day, the tailgate was moved from its original spot in the Harper Center to inside the AXiD House on campus. The tailgate was filled with delicious food, smiles and old friends welcoming each other back for another year of Elon education and enjoyment. After the tailgate, the rain couldn’t stop some of the most dedicated Phoenix parents and students from attending the home football game. Although we lost to Wofford, sisters like Montana Brown and Brooke Babb still enjoyed the game and cheered on our Phoenix athletes through the rain and chilly weather.

Sunday provided an even more exciting opportunity for the female relatives of our chapter’s sisters: Mother’s (and Grandmother’s) Initiation! Mothers and Grandmothers of more than a dozen Theta Nu sisters experienced our ritual, learned the true meaning of Alpha Xi Delta, and became sisters in our beloved fraternity. My own mother went through this special and heartfelt ritual, and I couldn’t be prouder to call her my sister as well as my mom.

Parents Weekend was a blast for our sisters and their parents. We hope that any and all future events will run as smoothly and be as much fun as that weekend was!

Xi Week This year’s Xi Week was quite a success throughout each activity we hosted from October 1st-5th, as every sister raised our efforts to spread awareness and to overall benefit Autism Speaks. We started off the week with Xiti dinner, a tradition attended loyally by community and campus individuals alike. Every member of our active chapter participated in some way by

baking, working the event with entertainment or service, or attending as patrons.

We raised $2,150 in total from Fall 2012’s Xiti Dinner, and we had such a turn out that our unlimited ziti began to disappear by the end of the night! On Tuesday, we held a table at Elon’s college coffee displaying our sisterhood board and information on Autism Speaks, as well as displaying our beautiful handmade cake pops for sale. This was an excellent opportunity to recognize our philanthropy as well as sorority at this traditional weekly Elon event.

We continued our success of Xi Week on Wednesday when we held our profit share with Smitty’s and Pandora’s Pies. Due to our active publicity of the event, we were able to gain donations from the share as well as enjoy a meal away from our meal plans or kitchen stoves. We also held Xi Candyland on Wednesday and the following day, where we sold candy and cake pops in Moseley during peak activity hours. Friday capped our xi week activities, as sisters handed out free popsicles (freeXI pops) in Moseley. In total, we raised $13,179 for Autism Speaks, and we thank every sister and community member who participated in our events!

Few events in the fall get as much excitement as Bump It Thump It. This year, the fun, philanthropic volleyball tournament fell on a beautiful September day. Eight fraternities came out to participate in the tournament, which raised $1, 228 to go towards Autism Speaks. Our AXiD sisters contributed to the effort by coaching the teams or, in most cases, by providing rousing support of their team. In the end, the prevailing team was Pi Kappa Phi after a long, intense game against Kappa Alpha Order. Regardless of winning or losing, our sisters had a great time cheering on the teams, hanging out, and raising funds for Autism Speaks.

AXiD’s Theta Nu annual fundraising trunk show, Xi Boutique, was held during parents weekend September 28th at the Elon Community Church. This year’s boutique hosted nine amaXIng vendors from across North Carolina such as Hadley Emerson and Gladiola Girls! They offered items such as hand-painted wine glasses, bubble necklaces, earrings, formal dresses, colored jeans and trendy shirts! Xi boutique had a great turnout this year with ladies from Elon’s community, gentleman in fraternities searching for a new bow tie, family members of Theta Nu sisters, and an appearance from AXiD’s sweetheart Ben Unger! Guests of the boutique and its vendors were so impressed with the selection and the turnout. The dressing rooms were constantly full with girls trying on sundresses, formal dresses, skirts, sweaters and adorable jeans. Alyson Campbell, a sister of AXiD, stated that she was so pleased with the variety of styles and selection of clothing and accessories to choose from. “I got all my jewelry and accessories for the fall including the perfect necklace for semi-formal,” she states. We thank everyone for making Xi Boutique a success and for contributing to our philanthropy Autism Speaks!

Homecoming

Homecoming was a successful and fun-filled event that allowed sisters to reconnect and enjoy the company of many AXiDs throughout the years. We had alumni from past years join us for a dessert reception at the AXiD house and then for a tailgate Saturday morning to support the Elon Phoenix. At the desert reception, alumni were able to see their family trees posted as decorations and learn the new members of their families. There were various desserts served, which were all homemade and delicious!

Our wonderful nominees for homecoming court this year were Vice President of PR Kelly Autenrieth and our Sweetheart Ben Unger. They both joined us for the tailgate Saturday morning and represented AXiD at halftime. We were delighted to see a large number of our alumni return for homecoming weekend and hope they had as much fun as the chapter did!

This year, Vice President of Chapter Life Micaela Herrmann took on the challenge of making semi formal even better than what we experienced as first-year students. With her “trusty sidekicks” Lindsay Kimble and Brooke Babb, the three ladies were able to team up with Soco Saloon to bring members of Theta Nu the ultimate rustic, country formal experience.

Sisters and their dates were able to indulge in barbeque, hush puppies, and sweet tea while having an open view of the dance floor on the first floor. The dance area, which was buzzing with the music of requested songs from sisters, was spacious for all types of dancing. I personally witnessed swing dancing at its finest from another senior, Haley Johnson. Sisters and their dates chatted and danced for the entire night under a dance floor of lasers and lights until wrap up time. On the eve of her twenty-second birthday, Kelly Beane was even pulled on stage to DJ and we were all given the opportunity to listen to her uncanny DJing ability.

However, semi formal is not all about dancing and eating. The sisters of Theta Nu use this night to reconnect, shake off some weekly stresses, and enjoy each other’s company. As a senior, I can honestly say these nights are some of my favorite memories that I’ll take with me from my college experience. The night opens up the opportunity for everyone to get off campus and appreciate all of the types of dorky dances that are brought to the dance floor.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to our wonderful sisters Michaela Herrmann, Brooke Babb, Lindsay Kimble, and all of the other semi-formal monitors for ensuring that all of the sisters of Alpha Xi Delta had the best night possible.

Semi Formal Mother’s Initiation

During Parent’s Weekend a ceremony is offered to the relatives of the sisters of Alpha Xi Delta with an opportunity to join our sisterhood. We received a wonderful turnout of women who were eagerly ready to become part of our sisterhood we treasure so much! Many sisters were very excited to have the ability to share the bonds of AXiD sisterhood with their mother. Moms were able to learn more about this part of sorority life and understand how important this sorority is to her. “Mother’s Initiation” is a wonderful way to connect our family at school to our family

Shining Star

Caitlin Jones

Sales Champion

Caitlin Jones, a senior in Alpha Xi Delta just recently won first place at a national sales competition called International Collegiate Sales Competition at Florida State University. The competition hosted over 30 schools across the country with 70 competitors. Caitlin took first place in each of the four rounds selling the Tom James Clothing Company. Each round consisted of a 20-minute role-play to “buyers” and Skype calls. Caitlin and the rest of the Elon University exceeded expectations and Caitlin took first place, as Overall Champion and Elon University placed 3rd as a team. Caitlin states, “It was hands-down the most intense and memorable experience I have had at Elon to date. I could not have accomplished this and come so far if I did not have the support of my sisters, my family, and the sales team.”
