In less time it takes the average college student to earn an undergraduate degree, the UniΒversity Libraries have done someΒthing remarkable. Working as a team under the leaderΒ
ship of Roberta Armstrong, the Librariesβ Development Officer, the members of the Library Development Committee have raised significantly more than $1 million in new funds for the libraries. The DevelopΒment Committee is composed of alumni and library supporters. Matt Ostoyich β57 and Georgiana Panton are the current coΒchairs of the Committee. Other members of the team are Maureen Andrews β62, Hedy Bagatelle β60, Elaine Brody, β68, Carla Craft, Candace Groudine, Ph.D. β98, Sandra Ostoyich MLS β71, Edith Quake β63, Jeremy Schrauf, MA β75, Philip Shepherd β60, Frances Shepherd β62, Roy Stevens β56, β58, and Paul Travis β75. Emeriti Development Committee members include: BJ Chase β48, Charles Gibbs β73, Rene Gibbs β75, Lenore Grabowski β62, dean emerita Meredith Butler, Doris Ward β52, and Paul Ward β53. These individuals have led the various campaigns that created new endowments for collections, capital for renovation projects, new equipment, new furnishΒings, and programs for students and faculty. Their work provides a legacy of giving. They have been joined in their commitment by all of you. Your names are listed in the Honor Roll in this issue of Update. We are profoundly grateful for your continued support. UAlbany students and faculty experiΒence every day the benefits flowing from the generosity of UA alums and friends.
We now have installed a contemporary book security system for the University and the Science Libraries, and funding is in place to create a warm and welcoming leisure reading area in the University Library. Individual philanthropy offers the greatest benefit, which comes from having a research library that grants our students and scholars access to global resources to fulfill their research needs. Examples include the opening of our new Information Commons, which houses new computers and other topΒtier equipment; the refurbishing of the Dewey Graduate Library, which meets the needs of graduate students in our highlyΒrated fields of Social Welfare, Criminal Justice, and Public Affairs and Policy; and the creation of nine endowments for collections spanning all areas of scholarly inquiry. Building on the momentum of the past several years, I envision the Committee strengthening its efforts to set a new milestone for support of the Libraries. The UA Libraries continue to need support for the construction of group study space, climate control equipment for our oneΒofΒaΒkind special collections, and new resources for the expanding programs in the School of Nanotechnology and Engineering and the School of Public Health. These are our programs of the future, and UAlbanyβs Libraries must be able to meet the needs of those students, faculty members, and researchers. I know you will be there to help in these future endeavors. Thanks again for all you continue to do to maintain our strength and vitality into the 21st century.

In 2002, the University at Albany Libraries established the New York
State Modern Political Archive (NYSMPA). In the five years since the first collections were acquired, the University Libraries have secured the papers of 25 former members of Congress to complement the longΒ standing political archive. The NYSMPA includes papers from scores of members, New York State Legislature, dating back into the early 19th century. In addition, the collection includes the papers of The Honorable George De Luca, who was Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1955 to 1959. The most recent acquisition to NYSMPA has been the papers of U.S. Congressman Sherwood Boehlert (RΒ24th District). βFrequent Fliersβ Land at UA Libraries
If the UA Libraries could collect frequent flier miles for visits to our web pages, the Libraries would have a number of free trips coming β domestic and foreign. According to this yearβs βWeb Presence Usage Reportβ prepared by librarian Laura Cohen, MLS β75, a variety of global users visited the Librariesβ web site from domains worldwide, most notably Canada (26,000), the UK (22,000), Australia (21,000), India (18,000), Germany (12,000), Denmark (10,000) and 90 other countries in 2006/2007.
Other interesting data collected by Cohen:n Users come to our web site from a
variety of internet providers, most prominently local cable service Road Runner (324,000 visits).
n There were 3,777,000 visits to the Librariesβ website in 2006Β2007. 2,783,000 of these visits came from off campus.
n Visits to the Librariesβ website peaked in September, October, November,
and March, with a total of 340,000 or more visits during each of these months. October had the highest visit count, with 415,000 visits. These are months of high activity in the Libraries when the semesters are in full swing.

help build a Legacy through βhonor with books Fundβ
An inspirational work of literature, a favorite book, your childrenβs mostΒrequested bedΒtime story β there are moments in our lives when a book had made an indelible impression. Books sustain us and connect us to our families, friends, and teachers. Books are given to mark special occasions, such as birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other times of special achievement. Bookplates make that connection tangible. They document an important milestone, convey the bond we have with a book, and
honor those who have made a difference in our lives. The UA Libraries invites you to particiΒpate in a special program designed to allow you to pay a lasting tribute to a special person or highlight a special occasion by placing a bookplate in a newly purchased book in the subject area of your choosing (Arts, Education, Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences). Your $100 gift directed to the Honor with Books Fund will support a critical acquisition needed for the Libraries
and simultaneously honoring an individual or marking an occasion in perpetuity. When you make your gift to the UA Librariesβ Honor with Books Fund, a letter of acknowledgment and a copy of the bookplate will be sent to you and the honΒoree or his or her family. In addition, your name will be listed in the Libraryβs annual honor roll of donors.
For information, contact Roberta Armstrong at: [email protected] or 562-594-8995 or 518-429-5588.
UA Libraries host Association of college & Research Libraries Program
The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) and University at Albany Libraries jointly sponsored a βMarketing @ Your Libraryβ Workshop in October. The workshop was an intensive oneΒday program intended to guide individuals to develop a marketΒing communications program for an academic library. The focus was on communicating with external audiences but involving internal audiences, e.g. staff, friends, and volunteers. The program emphasized basic marketing
concepts and skills that enable libraries to develop a customized marketing program. TwentyΒfive librarians attended the program. Workshop instructors were Ken Marks, Dean Emeritus of University Libraries, University of Nevada β Las Vegas, and former chair of ACRL @ Your Library Task Force and the ACRL Marketing Academic Research Libraries ComΒmittee. Dr. Marks has presented this highlyΒacclaimed workshop to academic
librarians located in the US, Europe, and Asia; Deborah Bernnard, UAβs Dewey Library, who was a member of the American University Libraries Team that was the 2005 recipient of ACRLβs Best Practices in Marketing Academic and Research Libraries @Your Library Award; Dean Frank DβAndraia; as well as MARL Committee members Barbara Winters, Dean of Libraries, Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia; and Cynthia Pawlek, Associate Librarian of the College, Dartmouth College.

UA Libraries Raise $1.1 Million from Alumni and FriendsAlumni and friends of UAβs Libraries contributed $1.1 million in gifts and pledges in the 2006-2007 fiscal year to support programs, collections, and special projects. The amount raised represents a record high for a single year of Library support. βWe are very pleased with these results,β says Dean Frank DβAndraia. βOur donors help keep the Libraries central to the intellectual lives of UA students, faculty, and researchers.β
The private support was in the form of outright gifts, pledge payments, and bequests made and received. See the βhonor Roll,β pps. 6-11, for details.
contributions were for the Annual Fund as well as for support for endowments. The Library Development committee is currently advancing nine endowments. These endowments, all of which were initiated within the last five years, are collectively worth $1.5 million. The Development committee, led by georgiana Panton and Matt Ostoyich β57, is committed to achieving another banner year for endowment support in 2007-2008.

6Library Update Fall 2007
We have delineated the names of our supporters into categories in the list of recognition. This list includes both annual fund gifts (unrestricted) and gifts for endowments (restricted). The donors listed have contributed in whole or in part to the Libraries at the level noted. We have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this listing of our donors to the University Libraries for July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007. If you find an error, please notify us and accept our apologies.
Gifts to Albanyβs Libraries through the Annual Fund are a vital source of funds for purchasing books and other materials, enhancing libraries services, for initiating special projects, and for providing general support. These funds are unrestricted. Gifts to endowments can be made outright (cash), through a living trust, or a bequest in a will, by a paid up life insurance/retirement plan gift, a real estate donation, or through a plan that gives a return to the donor (charitable gift annuity or a pooled income fund); or a charitable remainder trust or charitable lead trust. All such gifts present tax advantages, and you can combine a gift to realize significant tax advantages for you and your family.
The following donors have contributed all or a portion of their annual gift to the University Libraries from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007* Individuals whose employers generously matched their gifts

University at Albany Libraries honor Roll of Donors 2006-2007
Be Part of the Librariesβ LegacyThe following endowments represent current investment opportunities for UA Library donors.
n The Dean and Directorβs New Initiatives Fund for Albanyβs University Libraries. n honoring Our Professors endowed Fund for University Libraries. n University Libraries Fund for Materials in education. n University Libraries Fund for Materials in Fine Arts and Performing Arts. n University Libraries Fund for Materials in Social Sciences. n UAlbanyβs greatest generation Fund for the University Libraries. n University Libraries Fund for Materials in economics. n University Libraries endowment for enriching Programs in Science and Technology. n The Preservation of Tradition Fund for the University Libraries.
gifts for endowment are invested by the University. The income from that investment is directed towards a purpose that is specified by the donor. endowment funds are especially valuable because, once established, they provide interest income for the library in perpetuity. Such funds allow donors the opportunity to honor or memorialize a friend or family member. Itβs a wonderful way to blend a donorβs vision with University Librariesβ objectives.
In addition to the current established endowment opportunities, you may choose to establish a named endowment fund with a minimum gift of $10,000 to the University Libraries. All purchases made from book endowment funds are recognized by a special bookplate. Other library purchases are recognized by a plaque. contact Roberta Armstrong for more information ([email protected] or 562-594-8995 or 518-429-5588).
