Fellow Citizens:
I encourage everyone to prepare now for the coming storm season. Make a family emergency plan. Make an evacuation plan. Families that are living in trailers are at a greater risk because trailers cannot tolerate storm force winds. Thus, more citizens may be asked or ordered to evacuate should a storm head our way. Our population is now larger, too, and we must consider the factors of additional traffic and neces-sary resources.
We will continue to use every means at our disposal to reach you with information about evacuation orders and instructions. Our First Call system enables us to send au-tomated phone calls to individual homes, with wire-based telephones, in affected areas. If such a call comes to your house, please listen carefully and follow the instructions from the Emergency Management Staff.
If the governor activates the Contra-Flow plan, it will prob-ably start in St. Tammany Parish about 30 hours before the onset of gale-force winds. You should already have an evacuation destination planned. Unfortunately, waiting until Contra-Flow is enacted could require you to change your routes and plans. Please keep this in mind. Local officials monitor every tropical system that enters the Gulf of Mexico, and our Emergency Operations Center is activated well in advance of any anticipated impact to our community. Please monitor the progress of tropical activ-ity yourselves, and access local information through Cable Channel 10, www.stpgov.org and other local news media.
Please take the time now to double-check your hurricane season plans, using the information in this pamphlet as a guide. Review your plans with your immediate family, and check with family, friends and neighbors who are elderly or in any way disabled to help them prepare. St. Tammany’s citizens are kind and generous, and I know we can count on you to do your part in preparing for the Hurricane Season.
Sincerely,
Kevin DavisParish President
When a storm is in the Gulf of Mexico, these are preparatory steps you should take:
Listen to weather updates on your local stations and on NOAA Weather Radio. Don’t trust rumors, and stay tuned to the latest information.
Check your Disaster Supply Kit. Obtain any needed items.
Refill prescriptions. Maintain at least a two-week supply during the hurricane season.
Clear yard of potential flying debris, e.g. lawn furniture, potted plants, bicycles and trash cans.
Protect your windows and glass doors! Brace double entry and garage doors at the top and bottom.
Fill your car’s gas tank and check oil, water, and tires. Gas pumps don’t work without electricity.
Secure your boat early. Drawbridges will be closed to boat traffic after an evacuation order is issued.
Leave the swimming pool filled and super-chlorinated. (Cover the filtration system.)
Get cash. Banks and ATMs won’t be in operation without electricity and few stores will be able to accept credit cards or personal checks.
One of the most important tools for emergency preparedness is a Disaster Supply Kit. Stock up today and store in water-resistant containers. Replenish as necessary, especially at the beginning of the hurricane season, June 1.
Two-week supply of prescription medicines.
Two-week supply of non-perishable/special dietary foods.
Drinking water: 3-gal/per person/per day for two weeks.
Flashlights and batteries for each member of the family.
Portable radio and seven sets of batteries.
First aid book and kit including bandages, antiseptic, tape, compresses, non-aspirin pain reliever, anti-diarrhea medication.
Mosquito repellent and citronella candles.
Two coolers (one to keep food; the other for ice).
Plastic tarp for roof/window repair, screening, tools, nails, etc.
Water purification kit (tablets, chlorine [plain], and iodine).
Infant necessities (medicine, sterile water, diapers, ready formula, bottles).
Clean up supplies (mop, buckets, towels, disinfectant).
Camera and film.
Non-electric can opener.
Extra batteries for camera, portable TV, lamps, etc.
Plastic trash bags.
Toilet paper, paper towels, and pre-moistened towelettes.
Supply Checklist Storm in the Gulf Storm Threatens St. Tammany If Ordered to Evacuate
Let friends and relatives know where you are going. Make sure your neighbors and the elderly have a safe ride.
Turn off electricity, water, and gas.
Lock windows and doors.
Disaster Supply Kit
Pillows, blankets, sleeping bags, or air mattresses.
Extra clothing, shoes, eyeglasses, etc.
Folding chairs, lawn chairs, or cots.
Personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.).
Quiet games, books, playing cards, and favorite toys for children.
Important papers (driver’s license, special medication information, insurance policies, and property inventories).
Shelter In Place ChecklistMake sure your windows are protected and home is secured.
Offer your home as shelter to friends or relatives who live in vulnerable areas or mobile homes.
Clean containers for drinking water and your bathtub for storing clean water. Line the tub with plastic sheeting or clean shower curtains, or caulk the drain with silicone caulking; it will hold water for weeks and cleans up easily when dry. Plan on three gallons per person, per day for all uses.
Check your Disaster Supply Kit. Make sure you have at least a two-week supply of non-perishable foods.
Don’t forget a non-electric can opener.
Cash. (With no power, banks may be closed, checks and credit cards may not be accepted, and ATMs may not be operational).
Charcoal, wooden matches, and grill.
During the storm, stay inside and away from windows, skylights, and glass doors. Find a safe area in your home - an interior reinforced room, closet, or bathroom on the lower floor.
Wait for official word that the danger is over. Don’t be fooled by the storm’s calm “eye.”
If you lose power, turn off major appliances such as the air conditioner and water heater to reduce damage. If flooding threatens your home, turn off electricity at the main breaker.
