Desiderio Alberto Arnaz y De Acha III better known as Desi Arnaz was born on March 2, 1917 in Santiago, Cuba. He is best known for the popular 1950s television show “I Love Lucy”, a sit-uation comedy that he helped create along with his wife Lucille Ball, to whom he was married from 1940 to 1960. Arnaz played “Ricky Ricardo,” a struggling Cuban-born bandleader whose high-spirited wife Lucy (played by Ball) was forever engaged in some sort of comedic mischief. Behind the scenes, Arnaz was known as a savvy busi-nessman and producer and a trailblazer in the early years of television.

Desi came from well made family. Desi father was a mayor of Santiago and a wealthy property owner whose holdings included a cattle ranch, two dairy farms, and a villa on a small island in Santiago Bay. Desi’s mother, the former Dolores de Acha, was the daughter of one of the founders of the Bacardi rum company. As a teenager, Arnaz was expected to attend col-lege before embarking on a career in law and politics. His fl ed from Cuba changed the direction of Arnaz’s life. In August 1933, the Arnaz home in Santiago was burned and ransacked. While Arnaz and his mother managed to escape to safety, his father, a newly elected congressman, was put in prison. While there, he was advised by the new chief of state, Fulgencio Batis-

ta, that he would be freed if he left the country. Promising to send for his wife (whom he’d later divorce) and son, Arnaz’s father set out for Miami.

In June 1934, the 17-year-old Desi arrived in America and was greeted by his father, who had established an import-export company with two other refugees in Miami. To save money, father and son lived in the company warehouse and ate cans of pork-and-beans. They used baseball bats to ward off the rats that scurried through the building. After school, young Arnaz worked cleaning bird cages for a man who sold canaries in drug stores.

Arnaz musical beginnings was recommended to a band-leader by

a girlfriend’s grandfather. Armed with a used gui-tar, purchased for $5

from a pawnshop, and a facility with the instru-

ment - he’d used it often in Cuba to serenade the

opposite sex - Arnaz per-suaded his father to let him

take this new $39-a-week job at the Roney Plaza Hotel.

Xavier Cugat, the “king” of Latin dance music soon discov-

ered the young musician. Upon graduating from high school

and serving a stint in the Cugat orchestra, Arnaz debuted his own

band in Miami Beach in December 1937. The Desi Arnaz Orchestra

won favorable reviews in New York and Miami. Collaborators, Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers, asked the young orches-tra leader to audition for their upcoming Broadway musical Too Many Girls. Arnaz landed the part of the Latin American ex-change student. Soon the 23-year-old was on his way to Hollywood to appear in the fi lm version of the musical, starring 28-year-old studio actress, Lucille Ball.

Lucy and Desi’s fi rst scene together in the movie Too Many Girls required him to take one glance at her and swoon dead away in ecstasy. It didn’t take much acting skill; by then, they were already in love in real life. The relationship was passionate and tumul-tuous from the start, punctuated by clashes of temper and jealousy. change student. Soon the 23-year-old was on his way to Hollywood to appear in the

agreements centered on Arnaz’s fl irtatious nature. Still, they came to care deeply for one another. Arnaz called her “Lucy” even though she had long called herself “Lu-cille.” He didn’t like the name Lucille, Arnaz recalled in his autobiography. “That name had been used by other men. ‘Lucy’ was mine alone.”On November 30, 1940, Ball and Arnaz were married in Connecti-cut with a wedding ring purchased at the last minute from Woolworth’s.

In 1948, Arnaz and Ball formed Desilu Pro-ductions to coordinate their various stage, screen, and radio activities. A year later, Arnaz asked Ball to marry him again - this time in an offi cial Catholic ceremony. The ceremony was later played out again, albeit in a more fanciful manner, in an episode of I Love Lucy.

By 1950, Arnaz and Ball had both estab-lished themselves in the medium of radio. Arnaz fi rst served as the band leader for Bob Hope’s radio show, then as host of the musical quiz show Your Tropical Trip; Ball portrayed the scatter brained housewife on the radio serial “My Favorite Husband”. When the CBS television network decided to turn My Favorite Husband into a TV se-ries, Ball insisted that Arnaz be cast as her husband. As the show’s producer as well as its leading man, Arnaz helped bring movie-quality techniques. Desi originated many techniques that are now standard proce-dure in series television, including the use of several cameras to fi lm the performance, preceding performances with a warm up man, fi lming before a live audience, and the re-running of fi lms of old episodes. At the time, normal practice was to broadcast live from a studio in New York. Desi’s innova-tions allowed “I Love Lucy” to be fi lmed at Desilu in Hollywood and broadcast from New York via fi lm. The existence of a broadcast quality fi lm print for each epi-sode also opened the way to syndication of the series, which is still widely aired today. Even after “I Love Lucy” ended, Desilu

Productions continued as a successful and infl uential company. Desilu produced “De-cember Bride”, “Make Room for Daddy”, “Our Miss Brooks,” “The Untouchables,” and other shows.

On July 17, 1951, just as scriptwriters were putting the fi nishing touches on I Love Lucy for the show’s October 15, 1951 pre-miere. The principal characters were Ricky Ricardo, a struggling Latin bandleader who would burst into Spanish whenever he got particularly exasperated, and his wife Lucy, a wacky housewife with showbiz aspirations but no real talent. Before long, I Love Lucy was a smash hit, televised around the world. “Rather than repelling audiences as CBS had feared,” wrote Har-ris, “Desi’s fl amboyant Cuban-ness appar-ently had the opposite effect of attracting

viewers.” Casting Arnaz as a TV husband was “a case of awkwardness being recog-nized as an asset,” observed a critic for the New York Times. The show won Emmy awards in 1952 and 1953 for best situation comedy.

Arnaz attributed the success of the show mostly to his wife’s performance as the daffy Lucy. Madelyn Pugh Davis, a writer for the show, said in People magazine in 1991: “He always knew she was the star. Never in all those years did I ever hear him say, where’s my part?” Under Arnaz’s direction, Desilu Productions became a media giant. In 1955 I Love Lucy began re-broadcasting earlier episodes - the fi rst reruns ever shown of a current prime-time show - because so many viewers with brand-new televisions had missed the show’s early years. As the New York Times observed, “The appeal of reusable fi lmed programs led eventually to a seismic shift in television production from New York to Hollywood, and made the program’s creators million-aires.”

In addition to I Love Lucy, Desilu produced

such hits as Our Miss Brooks, The Un-touchables, and The Danny Thomas Show. Arnaz and Ball also appeared together in movies such as The Long, Long Trailer and Forever, Darling. In 1957, Desilu bought RKO Studios, where he and Ball had met in 1940. By the mid-195Os Desilu was an empire that grossed about $15 million an-nually and employed 800 people.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Arnaz remained active in show business. In 1967, he launched the NBC series The Moth-ers-in-Law, starring Eve Arden and Kaye Ballard. In 1976, Arnaz published his au-tobiography, A Book, which included an epilogue about Ball that stated, “I loved her very much and, in my own and perhaps pe-culiar way, I will always love her.” Arnaz appeared on Saturday Night Live with Desi Jr. to promote the book.

In 1986, after years of smoking four or fi ve Cuban cigars a day, Arnaz was diagnosed with lung cancer. Lucille Ball stayed with him for several hours before he lapsed into a coma. He died in the arms of his daugh-ter, Lucie, on December 2, 1986.

Desi originated many techniques that are now standard procedure in series television, including the use of several cameras to fi lm the performance, preceding performances with a warm up man, fi lming before a live audience, and the re-running of fi lms of old episodes.

DJ KRIM

by Hector Garcia

Born and raised in LA DJ KRIM grew up listening to Power 106 and was highly infl uenced by the Power 106 Mix-ers. His diverse background in music is what created his versatile style of mixing, which is what makes him stand out and keeps the audience wondering what he is going to play next. DJ KRIM has had a love and passion for music from a young age. Growing up he was exposed to many different genres of music ranging from hip hop to salsa. We caught up with DJ KRIM from his busy schedule to sit down and talk to us about his humble beginnings

HG: Tell us a title bit yourself how did it how all began?

DJ KRIM: I grow up from a family who likes listing to a lot of music my mom from El Salvador and my Dad from Ec-uador hearing a lot salsa in house it was more about making people dance so I started right after High School So I have been DJing for about 11 years

HG: Who was your biggest infl uence?

DJ KRIM: Power 106 and Vice and Echo

HG: So How old were you when you fi rst started?

DJ KRIM: Between 17 or 18

HG: How long have you been DJing?

DJ KRIM: 13 years

HG: Tell us what was your fi rst event and how memorable was it?

DJ KRIM: The fi rst thing i did that was big was a sushi place at Dos Lagos. Within like a month the place was crazy. My name got built there really quick They Busboys working like Bouncers. From there I start-ed to get know from local promoters

HG How did you get the name DJ KRIM?

DJ KRIM: Growing up in Orange County and going to Disneyland with my friends was the place to go to and of course we loved picking up on girls and we never used our real names. My fake name was Jonah’s KRIM . When I started to DJ it be-came DJ KRIM I wanted it to have a back story

HG What do you think about the MC’s?

ay DJ KRIM: I feel that its good when they

are hyping you up but sometimes they do carry about, the show is not about them Its about the DJ and the MC comes second. So I have been to turn them off. I mean if there is an acappella in a song i want the people to hear it not the MC talking over it that’s when i turn them off.

HG:When you DJ do you have your set planned or do you pre plan your set?

DJ KRIM: When i fi rst started I thought that was you were suppose to do, but as i started growing you can’t that do that be-cause every club I do there are so many DJ’s. Every club will book 3 or 4 guys and am at the point that i will be playing later on through the night and lets says the other two guys before me just played the song that i was going to play then I don’t know what am going to do. So learning from ex-perience I pretty much wing it and feed off from the crowd.

HG:Which song never fails in the dance fl oor?

DJ KRIM: I must have to say Shake that monkey from Too Short you can never go wrong with Too Short

HG So tell us in your down time how do you relax?

DJ KRIM:You would think i would be out around the town but i like to be at home watching TV with my wife or go out to dinner or movies the complete opposite of my job.

HG: I understand you were voted the num-ber 1 DJ in the Inland Empire how did that feel for you?

DJ KRIM: Honestly it was a crazy story i mean there are guys that campaign for things like that and I found out by some guy who told me congratulations for being voted the number 1 DJ and I looked at him and remembering saying to him congratu-lations for what? Mind you this was a big tattooed dude and i was calling him a liar LOL. I still couldn’t believe it until i got home and looked it up online and that’s when it hit me that it was true.

HG:What advice do you have for up and coming DJ’s?

DJ KRIM: Don’t be such a hurry to try and make money and make things happen. Of course when we all fi rst started we started on Vinyl and you had to practice at least six months to just match a beat and continu-ously practice and continuously DJ house parties for free. Back then when I started I never asked how much I was excited to play in front of people. Don’t be such a hurry to make money because the last thing you want when someone does actually book you and they see that youare starting out that could really hurt you in the long run.

Pam r Your Skin at e SpaBy Anna Lynn C. Sibal

Smooth, clear and fl awless skin is an indication of good health, not just of beauty. Whatever lifestyle choices we make, or whatever forms of abuse we make our bodies go through, such as drinking, bingeing and smoking, getting stressed out lots of times, or lack of ex-ercise and sleep, show easily enough on our skin. It is easy to tell if a person is not of good health: she always looks wan and sallow, her skin dry and fl aking, and most likely sporting dark circles under the eyes. A person who is at the peak of health has smooth and soft skin that is alit with a rosy glow.

Many women go to day spas to pamper their skin and make them look nice and healthy. Spas have special treatments that can rejuvenate the skin, take the toxins out of the body, and make the skin look younger and looking fresh.

If you go to a spa to get your skin pam-pered, what treatments should you go for and what should you expect? Listed be-low are basic treatments you can fi nd in a spa:

Facials. A facial is a way of deep cleansing the skin, removing the dirt, the impurities and the blackheads from the face. After a facial the skin of your face should feel clean, soft and hydrated.

Facial mask. The idea of the facial mask is to make your skin feel tighter, smoother and hydrated. It is also supposed to exfoliate your skin and re-move the dirt and dead skin cells from it, as well as to treat acne. Facial masks are

done by putting some substance evenly on your skin and letting it dry on the skin before washing it off. Facial masks are typically made of algae, seaweed and mud, but it can also be made of other ma-terials.

Body scrub. A body scrub ex-foliates and removes the dead skin cells from the body using different types of oils and salts. This hydrates and makes the skin of the body soft and smooth.

Body mask. Body masks are also used for exfoliating and for removing dead skin cells from the body. It works exactly the same way as the facial mask.

Body wrap. In a body wrap treatment, certain creams, liquids or a special mud is applied to the body. The body is then wrapped tightly and allowed to stay so for a period of time. A body wrap treatment is supposed to detoxicate the body, or maybe help the body shed off a few pounds.

Day spas also offer different kinds of mas-sages to relax the body, to relieve it from stress and detoxicate it. Having healthy, glowing skin, after all, is an inside job. If you are feeling pain or stressed out, it is best to relieve these aches and pains through massage so the skin would look healthy and beautiful.

Visit a day spa and pamper your skin ev-ery once in a while. It will do your skin and your health a world of good.

SonsolesBy: Monique Rodriguez

Latin vibes, variety of cultur-al, and an amazing sound is what you’ll get from a group of guys who go by the name of Sonsoles. Their sound is infl uenced by a plethora of genres ranging from heavy metal, Chicano pop, and different Latin sounds. Although they are not yet signed to a label, Jose Hernandez (lead vocalist), Steve Baltazar (keyboards), Ceasar Abrego (bass), Lonnie Moreno (drums), are on the right path to fulfi lling their dreams.

Estilo had the opportunity to inter-view the members of the group about their journey as Sonsoles this far. The band was formed in 2006 and the name “Sonsoles”, was inspired by the little sister of a friend who was a former guitar player for the band. When asked to explain the meaning of the name Sonsoles, they simply stated, “It’s a common Spanish female name that refers to ‘beautiful eyes’.” The band went through tedious amounts of construction before they became the band that they are today. Although the band was originally founded in 2006, Co-founders of the group

Ceasar Abrego and Steve Baltazar put ads on Craiglist for local musicians to audition for opening spots in the band and that is when Jose Hernandez, and Lonni Moreno joined in to fi nalize the formation of Son-soles in 2008.

Each member has their own style and unique traits that unifi es great together to make amazing music. They each derive from different backgrounds that include: Spain, Mexico, El Salvador, even right from our backyard, Los Angeles. They all have been exposed to different sounds, but the great characteristic trait about their mu-sic is they incorporate the variety of sound they know, to make a unique sound that gets the crowd going. The members add-ed,“ The love of Latin music is what we all share in common.” Sonsoles is currently involved in a con-test for radio station, Super Estrella, for a chance to play at Staple Centers. Playing Staples Centers has been a dream of theirs that they are hoping to fulfi ll through this competition. They plan on adding extra re-hearsal time and putting their all into this particular chapter of their life. Although Sonsoles is not signed with any label at this time, they are extremely happy with where they are at. Band members, Steve and Jose,

say they do it for their love of music.

Sonsoles music covers topics that every culture can relate with: love and lost loves. They’ve played in venues such as Dodger stadium and Angel stadium, to a more in-timate setting such as the House of Blues. No matter where they play, they show their love of music to their fans and try their best to interact with the audience in order to put on an amazing show. They are currently working hard to record a new album in hopes of becoming one step closer to ful-fi lling their dreams. They are a passionate, hardworking, fun loving group of guys that can’t wait to take the Latin music world by storm.

For more information and updates about Sonsoles, visit their website: sonsolesmu-sic.com and keep a look out for them on facebook and twitter.

8 BestWeight Loss TipsThere are a lot of “crash” diets out there that promise that you’ll drop a con-siderable amount of weight in days or a week.

I have tried a few of these, and in my ex-perience the weight always comes back on, just as quickly since the weight loss tips given are not something that will work with your body.

One thing you don’t want to do if you are actually serious about losing weight is to follow these fad diets and their ridiculous weight loss tips.

After their ineffectiveness has been proven time and again, people will start to wise up to that particular diet, and will head off in search of a new craze.

Lets be honest, people are always search-ing for new weight loss tips because they want to lose pounds and they want imme-diate results, but this is just wishful thinking.

To lose weight permanent-ly and effectively it will be a rather slow prog-ress, all depending on your metabolic rate and how much you need to lose.

There are however some proven tried and true weight loss tips for aiding in the

weight loss process, and I can make you familiar with them.

Weight Loss Tip 1

Don’t skip breakfast. Whatever you do fol-low this advice, because otherwise you are much more likely in fact prone to binge later in the day.

Weight Loss Tip 2

Don’t eat anything for at least an hour be-fore going to bed.

Weight Loss Tip 3

Don’t snack while watching TV. It’s ac-ceptable to eat a meal while watching tele-vision, but never is snacking at this time acceptable.

Weight Loss Tip 4

Substitute fruits like; bananas, watermel-on, plums, peaches, and oranges for sugary treats like; cookies and candy.

Weight Loss Tip 5

Substitute honey for sugar, and car-ob powder for chocolate in

all recipes. These

taste just as good if not better when used properly.

Weight Loss Tip 6

Eat more vegetables. This can even be en-joyable if you have a good cookbook like Good housekeeping’s latest edition.

Weight Loss Tip 7

Avoid unnecessary high calorie foods. In-stead of a high calorie salad dressing for instance try cottage cheese or yogurt to improve the salads taste and peel of the pounds.

Weight Loss Tip 8

Exercise at least a half hour each day for five days out of the week. Biking on a sta-tionery bike while reading is a great form of exercise to slim legs.

In conclusion there is nothing stopping you from losing weight except

yourself. Get off the “I can’t do anything

about my weight problem” band-wagon and start dropping pounds today!

Miss Hispanidad International 2011

Mary-Kate Fitzpatrick

Mary-Kate Fitzpatrick is the reining Miss Hispanidad International. She won her title in 2011 where she represented her culture of Colombia. When asked how she felt about run-ning for MHI she answered...”I was concerned before I entered MHI that I wasn’t affiliated with my Colombian culture. I really wanted to embrace it and to have it more apart of me and when I finally started realizing it wasn’t about speaking spanish, it wasn’t about look-ing hispanic, it was about embracing who you are and your blood and where you come from. Once I started to open up to that, everything really started to change and I started becom-ing more comfortable with myself and learn-ing about my culture was probably the most amazing part because I learned so many things in the pageant that I never would have learned if I hadn’t entered to begin with.”

Mary-Kate is currently a full time student in college studying film and editing. She aspires to become a Director and produce her own films and is working towards achieving those goals today. Mary-Kate loves being in front of the camera just as much as behind the cam-era, and models to help pay for her equipment. She’s modeled for well known brands and loves what she does. She is Vice President of her student body class and will be running for President next year.

We at Estilo wish her all the best and we are very proud to have an amazing and positve Latina role model, MHI Mary-Kate Fitzpatrick as our Cover Model for Estilo Magazine. We know she will go on to do great things and will have our support.
