Main Statement
● Our client, Mr. Steve Janes, required a support system for a totem pole.
● After designing to fulfill objectives, we realized that simplicity and designing for assembly played a larger role in our design process than we expected.
● Ultimately, we decided on the “Hollow Section Support System” as the solution to this problem.

Hollow Section Support System● Beam inserted into back of totem
pole, secured with hex lag screws
● Hole is drilled into the concrete base, partially filled with concrete
● Bottom of beam is placed into hole
Gaurav Kishore
How the Design Meets ObjectivesTemperature Resistance:● Based on calculations, steel will not expand/ contract more than 1 cm
Wind Resistance:● Based on calculations, system can withstand 13 kN of force● Max force in service environment is 8kN
Durability:● Steel’s lifespan is around 80 years
Gaurav Kishore
Benefits of Design● Easier to assemble than other designs using a beam
structure● Took up less space and was more reliable than cable
system
Gaurav Kishore
Design for “X”Safety:● Beam inserted into base instead of being bolted● Beam inserted as deep as possible
Durability:● Stainless steel opposed to regular steel
Assembly:● Lag screws instead of C-shaped brackets● Low component count
Gaurav Kishore
Materials and components:
Basic materials and components:● One Rectangular hollow section beam measuring 16 ft long● Twenty-two galvanized hex lag screw● Fast-Setting Concrete Mix
Additional requirements:● A crane service is also required
Feiyu Ren
Detailed implementation requirements:
Steps for implementation:
1. Get all materials ready for assembly.
2. Wear protective gears (e.g. gloves, goggles, etc).
3. Cut a 12 feets high, 4 inches wide, 6 inches deep rectangular section using the electric circular saw.
4. Remove the section by removing one thick strip at a time.
Feiyu Ren
5. Insert the beam into the removed section of the totem pole. Insert two screws connecting the beam and totem pole so that each screw is placed 0.75” from the top and 1” from either side of the beam. This ensures about 1.25” between the centers of the screws horizontally.
Continue to insert pairs of screws spaced identically but placed 14.25” below the previous set of screws (measured centre to centre) until there are 11 pairs of screws. When drilling, be careful not to fracture the wood since it is dry and dead.
Feiyu Ren
6. Drill a hole into the concrete base measuring 5” by 7” and 4’ deep. (Slightly larger than the beam dimensions (See Figure 4.3)
7. Fill 3/4 of the hole with dry mix, soak with water.
8. Use a crane to lift the totem pole and then slowly lower it to insert the beam into the hole.
9. Hold the crane in place until the cement sets and dries (approximately 1 hr)
Economics● Rectangular hollow section beam: $738 (shipping included)● Twenty-two galvanized hex lag screw $4.67 × 22 = $103● Three 50lb. Fast-Setting Concrete Mix $4.98 × 3= $15● Crane service
Disposal cost: $4.00
Total capital cost: $859

Regulations● Accessory Building &
Structures - City of Pickering Zoning By-Laws:
○ Totem pole must be set up at a required distance.
○ Not worry too much.

○ Structure higher than 1.8m must be placed 1.0m from neighboring building.
Regulations● Occupational Health and Safety Act 150 - 156:
a. Crane operator must be licensed before work.b. Client needs to inspect crane operator’s license before
implementation.c. To ensure workplace safety.

Therefore statement Azwad-Ur-Rahman
So, in conclusion we can say that the “Hollow Section Support System” is our final proposed design since● It meets the client’s need● Durable● Wind and temperature resistant● Complies with the client’s proposed budget● Requires very few simple components and tools for assembly● Requires very few modifications to the totem pole
Since these advantages ensures an effective solution to our client’s need we chose this design as our final design
Key recommendation(s): Azwad-Ur-Rahman
The following are some key recommendations for our client.1. Maintain the steel components of the design.
a. Apply rust coating occasionally2. Take extra precautions during the construction of this design since it
requires the usage of power toolsa. Wear protection while digging a hole in the concrete base and cutting
a hollow section in the totem pole b. Cut the hollow section carefully to avoid fracturing or splitting
3. Use the right components to ensure the stability of this designa. Wrong screws won’t support the weight of the totem pole
Take-away statement Azwad-Ur-Rahman
A simple but best solution must have the following features● Budget effective● Have very few components● Easy to set up● Must meet with the client’s need
‘Hollow Section Support System’ is ● A solution within the client’s budget● Requires very few components● Very simple to set up so the client can easily do it himself.● Meets with the client’s need of a support for his totem pole
So, we can say that the ‘Hollow Section Support System’ is the simplest but best solution to meet our client’s need. Now, after going through the Final Design Specification the client can proceed with the implementation of the main design.
