Hey there reader welcome to Epic Entertainment Magazine’s first everedition! My name is Victoria and I run the magazine. I do photos, interviews, articles, host the meetings and everything else that happenshere. I’ve got some awesome help from Joseph Greenbaum, MatthewVela, Thomas Downs, Ashur Benjamin, Phillip Carnevale, Mandi Kimes,Adal Robles, Ron Maher and of course my right hand man who Icouldn’t have done this without Chris Lamoree. With these group ofwriters and photographers we created something EPIC.A little background on EEM, I’ve always gone to shows, met celebrities, vip access to this and that and it was fun but I wanted it to be somethingmore than just fun. I wanted to make something out of it and a careerout of it so I created my first ever magazine. I want people to seeentertainment through my eyes and through the eyes of those who workfor me. I’m always open to bringing people on board for an event thatthey experienced that they want to share with the world as well!

We cover everything from big music festivals in other states to hauntedhouses (or holiday events). We cover the best bars/clubs in Arizona toadvertising some of the best companies in Arizona. I’m very openminded to what entertainment means. People say they’re bored all thetime and they shouldn’t be. There’s so much in this world to seewhether it’s a concert, a bar, a fair, going skiing this winter, the bestresorts in state and around etcetera. My life is full of entertainment andyou should be getting the most out of life like we here at EpicEntertainment Magazine do.This first issue was very hard for me because my funding for hardcopies fell through, I lost my business partner right towards the end of it,I lost a lot of writers and photographers just because they gave up. Thepeople who are featured in this, who wrote for it and took pictures andso forth we’re the ones who don’t give up. We make things happen nomatter how long how far and how hard it was/is. We’re a great team ofmotivation, of helping and pushing each other, hard work and truededication and I couldn’t thank them more for all they’ve done for me.

Each issue will be released around seasons and holidays. Every twomonths we’ll release a new edition and each time I know it will get betterand bigger. We’ve got Thanksgiving and Christmas and the new yearcoming up and there’s going to be so many big and awesome events forpeople to go to. I just want to help others get a great experience andspread the word about some of these life changing moments. Andanyone who wants to be featured in here should reach out because I’dbe more than happy to help tell the world about them!I hope you guys enjoy reading this like I do. I wanted it to be different, real, no photoshop, no just boring feel to it. I wanted you to see thepictures like you were there. I want you to read the interviews like you’rethe one doing it. I want you to experience the magazine in the best waylike I did and I think you will. Thanks again to all those who were apartof this!

Daisey dukes, cowboy boots, free shots poured by thehottest ladies in town and drinks made by the best of the best.Moonshine Whiskey Bar is the only place to offer that kind ofnight.

Country bars are rare and few here in Arizona but it’sbecause of that that they are the best places to be. TakeMoonshine Whiskey Bar on Mill Avenue. The only country bar tobe on Mill and every Friday and Saturday night there’s a line toget in. But why? What makes a country bar of all places on Millso great?Whether you’re going out on a Wednesday night like most of usregulars do to listen to the awesome mixing by Dj Steel or you’recoming out on a Sunday to eat a pound of wings for only fivedollars you’re always in for a good time. The atmosphere ofMoonshine is unlike any in Arizona. It’s relaxing, it’s a party, it’sclassy and you’re always in for some sort of a surprise. Girlsdancing on the bar, an upstairs patio, a chandelier made out ofmason jars! What a place!

But not only is Moonshine a bar for people to party andhave a good time, it’s become a second home to some of us. Ifyou’re a regular like I am you can walk in any time of any dayand see at least five people you know, get hugs, get a goodcheer up, grab a drink, dance around, and make a fool ofyourself on the bull without being judged. The staff, the ownerseven their customers all form a tight bond that is sure to last alife time.. or at least a night! So come on out with those cowboyboots on, two step, Cupid Shuffle, dance on the bar, grab a fewbeers and meet some awesome people for the night of your life!

“Why did you pick Ben to be your partner and what would you say is hisstrongest quality?”“Ben and I became partners out of luck, we both knew someone whowanted to open a bar but he ended up backing out leaving Ben and Iand we both wanted to open up a country bar so we opened upMoonshine. And Bens best quality is his negotiation skills and his overallbusiness structure. He saves us a lot of money on rent and things likethat and he’s really good with negotiations.”

“What would you say is your personal favorite part about Moonshineand everything you two have created?”“I think the best part is that it’s fun and when you come in here you justhave a great time. Everything put together here just makes it a greattime, we have the banger of the night at the end of the night, we havethe bull, you come in and drink, all the dancing, the chandelier and it hasa beautiful ambiance and there’s lots of pretty people who come in. Soall around it’s like a party and I think that’s something that Mill Ave didn’thave.”

“Did you two actually create the chand.. ““It was my design, and then Ben altered it a little bit.” L“Lars came to me with this idea and said he saw it in Footloose, andthen I helped design it and build it with people who know how to bendmetal and people who know how to wire stuff. And then Lars myself andsome staff members actually hung it by ourselves.” B“There’s a video of me dangling over the edge..”“I’m on a 12 foot ladder and he’s on the opposite side of the railing witha rope around him being held by one of our bigger guys”

“One of the cool things you should know about Moonshine is that I wentto ASU I’ve been in this building for a long time. Ben and I live in Tempeso it’s owned by Tempe boys. We’re here every night, one of us is here7 nights a week. I think it’s cool cause on a Friday or Saturday nightthere’s a good chance that one of the owners will buy you a drink. If weknow your face we’ll take care of you, especially our regulars because itbuilds a relationship.”

“Are you guys going to be expanding Moonshine at all?“We are always looking to expand. We looked at Flagstaff and Colorado. I lived inColorado for a little while and would not mind moving back there again. Maybeeven Tucson.”

“So there is rumor of you opening up another bar right here next to Moonshine. Can you fill me in?”“It’s going to be a two story circle bar outside. We’re working with the zoningofficial right now but it will be right here where that water fountain is and we’regoing to put a second floor patio on it too. It’s going to be a separate concept frommoonshine. It’s going to be a cuban style cigar bar with fun drinks. More for happyhour when it’s nice out it’s going to be owned by us so when we have countryevents we can change the theme of it and make it look countryish. So that bar willserve as an outside bar while we host events here. So look for it early of nextyear!”

“Are you worried about each of your bars taking away from each other?”“No because if my neighbor is busy than my bar is going to be busy. I want tomove the crowd from 6th to here. I want to create an entertainment district herethat people just flock to. Most people that come here, they come here becausethey want to be here. We’re not worried about any other bars or even our own.”

“You mentioned having country events here, what are you planning?“We’re looking at bringing out Easton Corbin and Josh Thompson sometime nextyear. We’ll have a big country party here in the auditorium area for the eventswhich we can use the circular bar and Moonshine as well.”

“So why a country bar on Mill Ave?”“It’s not here. It’s the 1 thing that hasn’t been done on Mill yet. There’s 17 bars, orthere were when we opened and it’s the 1 concept that hasn’t been attempted yet.Arizona is one of the strongest states in the country for country so it seemed likecommon sense.”

“How did you land the Bar Hunters deal?”“That was me. I have a pretty big background in business. So when I opened upthis business they saw that and how this was successful and contacted me. Therewas a lot of publicity for this so they contacted me with interest to film here. Theyliked how we are on camera and the location and the concept behind it all.”

“How did you and Lars meet?”“I talked about doing a partnership with the guy who owns American Junkie andwhen our project didn’t work out at Gringo Star he put me in touch with Larsbecause he thought we would have a lot in common. We kinda just got along and Iliked his idea to put the country bar here.”

Page 8: Epic Entertainment Magazine

“What’s your favorite part about Moonshine personally?”“I would agree with Lars on what he said. You don’t have to be acountry fan to have a good time here. I brought a ton of my friends fromCalifornia out here and they just have a good time and party. You don’thave to have it programmed on your radio station to want to be here. Ifeel like we get the best looking girls in Tempe here. We’ve got a greatlooking staff too guys and girls.”

“I heard that you guys will be making a big appearance at CountryThunder 2014”“We’ll have a huge RV blasting Moonshine and have a red solo cupparty and everything.”

“So for country thunder, are you guys going to have a Moonshinecabana?”“We’re going to circle it off, have some moonshine banners up, we’regoing to bring tons of kegs and probably sell cups for like five bucks. We’re going to have a huge presence there. We’re going to be on thejumbotrons there and having camera presence and t shirts and soforth.”

“Are you guys going to bring merchandise to the bar?”“Yes! We’re working on bringing in tshirts and hats for men and womenat Moonshine.”

“What do you want readers to know about Moonshine?”“I want them to know about our menu. We have great food and we’renot getting the presence of people during happy hour which is 410 andwe want people to know about it. I’ll say if our menu gets big again thenwe’ll bring back the ribs for those who remember them.”

"How do you like being a bartender at Moonshine and what is your favorite partabout it?"I absolutely love it! I love the interaction with numerous people and the hours arethe best part.

"Are you a country fan? And if so, what's your favorite country song? If not, how doyou put up with working there?"Sort of. I was raised on country so I love 90's country, but usually we hear thesame couple songs that make you go crazy.

"You're one of the newer bartenders, what's your favorite drink to make andfavorite trick to perform?”I love making things that people haven't heard of, or things that are bright in color.Makes a bit of a wow factor. And I'd have to say juggling, when it's slow, you canusually find me juggling ice, tins, cups, and anything else I can get in the air.

"Why did you want to become a bartender in the first place?"I started a few years ago in the industry promoting, and then managing a team ofpromoters. I love to keep moving up and be challenged differently.

"What's the best and worst pick up line you've heard at Moonshine?”Haha, I don't think I've heard a good one yet, but I've heard a ton of bad ones. Butthe worst is when they claim to own or manage part of the bar.

“Why did you want to become a bartender and how long have you beendoing it?”“I’m on 13 years going on 14 years now, I started as a bar back atPlanet Hollywood in London and just graduated a stupid business cousethat I didn’t enjoy very much. I went in and asked and was hired the nextday. After two years they didn’t make me a bartender so I left, so I wentsomewhere else and after 6 months they made me a bartender and 6months later head bartender and then working bar manager.”

“Are you the working bar manager here?”“No, just one of the lead bartenders. There’s about two to three of ushere that people go to for help. People pretty much know they can go toone of three of us here to ask how much Jameson we have left for theweek or how to make drinks.”

“What brought you to Moonshine and do you like working here? Andwhat’s your favorite thing about working here?”“Moonshine happened around me. When I first got to Arizona no oneknew me or my talents and it was hard getting hired. When I went toMargarita rocks who was constantly hiring at the time, told them I flippedbottles and a few things they hired me the next day. Moonshine kindahappened around me. They bought the bar I worked at and they offeredeveryone an opportunity to stay on through the transition and I was theonly bartender who stuck through it. For that reason I’m the longestemployee here. I’m quite thankful for it though so I didn’t have to go jobhunting. I like the place because people come here because they lovethe music. They go out of their way because they love country musicand really enjoy it versus people who just go out to get drunk on Fridayor Saturday.”

Page 11: Epic Entertainment Magazine

“So your fascination with batman where did that come from and will yoube dressed as Batman for halloween?”“No, I think people will see that coming If I dress up as Batman. But wehave themes to follow like Saturday we’re dressing up as farm animals.I’m a nerd I’m into comics and video games and it was always the blacksuited spiderman, and I guess somebody gave me the nickname in theirphone as Batman. And then one night here one of the guys here gaveme a ride home and I was on the back of his motorcycle and I was quitedrunk and I was like “come on man Batman goes way quicker than this”and I stood up and put my arms out and said I’m Batman.”

“What’s the worst pickup line you’ve ever heard at a bar”“Um.. I mean there’s always the cheesy stuff like are your legs tiredbecause you’ve been running through my mind all day. And you standthere and you’re waiting for them to pay as they use these stupid linesand you’re just wondering.. have these ever worked you idiot? Likeseriously how often has it worked, keep trying.”

“Growing up what did you want to be or did you want to be Batman thebartender?”“Well growing up I always wanted to get into movie effects. Likecostumes and make up. I’ve always been fascinated with it.”

Darkness. Clowns. Chainsaws. Monsters. Screams. Blood. Graveyards.Zombies. It’s the end of the world, it’s your worst fear, it’s The 13th Floor. The scariest haunted house in Arizona has been giving thousands ofpeople screams all month long and the scariest night of all is yet tocome. Pitch Black November 7th and 8th is the final days of thisterrorizing place and by far the scariest night! Featuring two differenthouses, Zombie Land and The 13th Floor you’re in for screamsthroughout the night. I had the pleasure of going to The 13th Floor forthe first time this year and can promise you I myself screamedthroughout the whole thing (while the cameras were filming too)! Butbefore losing my voice, I was able to sit down and interview some of theactors and the acting director of The 13th Floor.

“Are there other 13th floors in the country?”“It was collaboration of a couple people who would put together hauntedhouses to bring together the 13th Floor. We’re in states like Colorado,Arizona and Texas and I believe the company is still growing.”

“What would you say is going to be the best scare of the 13th Floor forthe viewees?”“They’re all good scares but there’s certain aspects we need like clowns, darkness, chainsaws etc. What we try to do is put them in the placesthat will optimize that fear in people. The rest of the show might not havegot to them but we try to get that one good scare out of them.”

“What inspired ringthisdoorbell.com?”“Social media. We’re trying to expand to everyone everywhere and givethem a good scare before they even get here. So we know Facebook isone of the biggest for media so we hit that. You sign in and John Doe islooking at your pictures and your friends pictures and when you get hereyou see him and you say “O my God that’s John Doe!”

“Is John Doe here in the building?”“Yes, John Doe is here with his wrench looking around for you rightnow.”

“How many people does it take to make The 13th Floor happen?”“Tonight’s around 100 actors in their scenes. Becoming monsters, somewill be outside like the grave digger, John Doe etc. And on top of actorswe have the concession stands, security, lighting and I think it’s wellworth it and anyone who comes here will have a good time.”

“What is the one thing you want readers to know about The 13th Floor?”“I get to work here all year long and build these sets and every single setthere’s a lot of passion and crazy in it. I want you to forget about themedical issues, and the job you hate and the taxes next year and justescape and enjoy yourself. You’re coming into a show thats filled withmagic and passion.”

October is a busy month in Phoenix. As the weather releases its tripledigit hold on us, outdoor activities come alive again. One of the mostawaited annual events of the year is the Arizona State Fair in centralPhoenix. You'll find rides, exhibits, concerts, food, shows there'ssomething for everyone.

Each year about one million people, Arizona residents as well as visitorsfrom other states, visit the fair. The phrase "something for everyone" hasnever had more meaning than when applied to the Arizona State Fair.Of course kids and teens love the fair, but adults can enjoy theentertainment and activities just like their younger counterparts. The State Fair is held at the Fairgrounds (where else?) at 1826 W.McDowell Rd (19th Ave & McDowell Rd) in Phoenix, AZ. There is a $10charge for parking at the fairgrounds. Parking is $5 in the 20th Ave. &Encanto parking lot (SW corner of 19th Ave & Encanto).

The Arizona State Fair delights the crowds with standard favoritesactivities and events. The midway, the rides, and the animal exhibits areall part of the grand tradition. Every year, the organizers of the eventalways introduce new attractions to add some variety and appeal to theprogramming. I don't know how they do it, but every single year they findnew ways to entertain us. What will it be this year? Highjumpinghamsters? Bullriding bobcats? Tricycle test drives?

The concerts at the Arizona State Fair are free with your paid generaladmission. You might have to stand in line to get a seat, but the concertschedule always features nationally known performers. It isn't unusualfor people from neighboring states to come to town just for one of theseconcerts.

I'm pretty sure that I'm the only one who pays the full price to get intothe Arizona State Fair! Look here, www.azstatefair.com to get a rundownon admission specials, including unlimited ride wristbands. They cansave you and your family a bunch of money.

Tempe Arizona

An outsider looking in may view this event as a drunken bike party thatswarms Mill Avenue. However, for those involved it means much morethan that. It is a part of New Belgium Brewery History, a philosophy andfun for everyone.

The idea of Tour De Fat started with a dream and a pickup truck. Now itis a dream that has raised over 500 thousand dollars for thecommunities involved. After talking to Mateo Kowal, Employee Owner, Ihave come to discover the foundation of this event. Apart from thegeneral consensus of the public, of the goodness of beer and bikes,Mateo makes a great impression for New Belgium Festivities. “Tour deFat is a direct reflection of an Employee owned company,” states MateoKowal.

The reflection of a spectator is that of a great cause and reason forcamaraderie. Bike lovers and beer lovers a like come to the event for anexperience. After attending 110 Tour De Fat events Mateo Kowalexpressed his great appreciation for Tempe’s willingness to be a part ofthe event.

The willingness to partake in this event came quite easily with thevarious activities that were at Tour De Fat. People of all ages roam thestreets in “Ale’s Angels” apparel. The stages are crowded with peopledancing their heart out for a chance to win a free bicycle. Lines acrossTempe park to get a chance to try the beers on draft. Many enjoyed thatof the infamous Fat Tire, while others went the more seasonal route withthe Pumpkick Ale.

Every year, it grows tremendously. Some costumes become moreabsurd and the bike designers become more creative and original. TourDe Fat is a day to celebrate the feeling of wind in your hair and thebreath of fresh air. It is a community that comes together to inspire thepower of sustainable living and choice.

Next year Tour De Fat is in town, I hope you take the choice to find outwhat the folly is all about! Cruise down Mill in an original Tour De Fatcostume and pick a bicycle to best suit your style. Cheers!

This year KMLE hosted the first ever Scottsdale Showdown in thebeautiful city of Scottsdale, Arizona. The event brought an amazing BullRiding competition mixed with an amazing live concert of some of thegreatest artists in country music. Cowboys, bull riding, country music, dancing, food, and lots of good times. That sounds like the perfectcombination for a spectacular event, that we just couldn’t miss.

The talent they had on display was amazing and kept you on the edge ofyour seat, cheering at the amazing rides. They had plenty of seatingavailable for the general admission guests that gave you a full view ofeverything. The real experience was to the VIP guests, which you get foronly $50 more, where you get to go down into the pit and can standagainst the fence around the competition giving you almost the sameheart pounding feel that the riders themselves get.

Once done with the competition you could make your way over to seeKMLE outside of the concert venue where the eye candy Buck andBeard would take pictures with you making you sure had a grin on yourface when you walked in. Inside the concert venue they had specialplacing for VIP guests where they provided the best gourmetsandwiches with savory chipotle flavors and bacon bits to satisfy yourevery need, to amazing moon pies on a stick for dessert. To go alongwith the food they gave away 8 free drinks which made sure you weredancing all night long!

The venue for the concert was perfect, plenty of open space for thecrowd and dancing, along with “Cabana” areas for elite VIPs andsponsors. The lineup complimented the entire night perfectly with thesounds of Maggie Rose, Jerrod Neimen and the legends MontgomeryGentry. Dj Du played between sets keeping the crowd dancing andsinging along. Everyone there had a huge smile on their faces andlaughs heard all around. I couldn’t imagine this event being any better, but KMLE and everyone else involved promised the next year would bemultiple times better than this year. You can sign us up and guaranteewe will be there to cover every last amazing moment again!

“Is there a special someone who comes to mind when you perform yourhit Sorry?”“Well for me I think of my wife, I know that Josh our singer wrote thesong for his wife. It’s a song about being on the road, guys screw up,we’re human it’s our apology song to our girls. We’re very imperfectanimals, we’re very imperfect creatures.”

“Which is your favorite song to preform?”“It’s hard to pick a favorite, I love them all. I like playing songs off thenew album, Gluttony, Wrath, The Truth but I don’t get tired of playing LitUp or Crazy Bitch either.”

“What does BuckCherry mean and how did you come up for the namefor it?”“Keith Nelson came up with the name when he was reading a book withthe name Chuck Berry. Chuck Berry said that the music business is sogreedy that they’ll do anything to make a buck. Like take your name andturn it inside out from Chuck Berry to BuckCherry.

“How did you all meet and when did you know to form the band?”“Well the band had been together since 97 and then took a break andthen got back together around 2005/2006 and it was with 3 newmembers. We knew we wanted this to be a band when Keith said comeon over and rehearse we’ll work on some songs for our show at the keyclub. Then he said if you want to do this for good bring your rent moneyon Tuesday, so that’s what happened.”

“What advice would you give to an upcoming band?”“I would say the most important thing is songs. Work on your songs.Find somebody you like that’s already successful and reverse engineerwhy they’re successful. It usually is songs, so I would say work on yourcraft, being a good performer, song writer, if you’re a guitar player workon being a great guitar player. Be great at everything.”

“Is there anything you’d like to specifically say to your fans reading?”“We love you, we’re so grateful you’re in our lives. For our US fans we’llsee you next year, if you’re in South America, UK or Europe or Australiawe are on our way!”

“What is it like being one of the only girl bands performing?”“That’s interesting because I don’t look at it as being a girl band. I thinkwe’re all here together as musicians. However I didn’t even realize, thatya, I guess it’s us, Halestorm and In This Moment. And I’m so honored tobe in the same realm as those two bands. Maria, of In This Moment hasbeen one of my biggest inspirations since 06/07. It’s really an honor andthere’s a lot of bands with a lot of females in them like Skillet and theyplay and the drummer sings which I think is awesome because I can’teven chew bubble gum and walk haha.”

“Growing up did you want to be pretty princesses or rocker chicks?”“Well thats interesting because I think both of us went through a spell ofboth. I was always more like the badass sports fanatic who loved rockand roll and music but my sisters and I would play barbies. I was also acheerleader too and did all the things that girls do. But I think that’s notwhat makes you a bad ass it’s how you think on the inside. And Carlawas always the same kinda girl she is now just angry at the world. No I’mjust kidding, we grew up a lot the same and that helped us connect.”

“How did you two meet?”“Carla and I were in a cover band together. It was a punk metal coverband and there were a lot of girls in it and they were really snobby. Theywere a lot of covers and we were used to original stuff so we quit thatand made this. And now we’re here!”

“How did you learn to scream the way that you do?”“It’s completely different than singing and a different technique. And Igrew up a classically trained singer. So when I realized that this is wheremy passion lies and that I want to scream like the boys do and like I’mmad at my mom and dad it took a long time for me to learn. I think mostlywhat did it for me is driving in my car and just doing it.”

“Who is your biggest musical inspiration?”“My biggest inspiration would have to be Slipknot. That’s what I grew upwith, I’m a new metal kid born in the 80’s but really grew up in the 90’s soSlipknot was really where it was for me. Steel Panther and us haveplayed a million times together and we’re from the same town so we getto see each other all the time. We didn’t get to see them today but we arefriends.”

“You said you’re a sports fan, who’s your NFL team?”“The Raiders hands down… Oh are we fighting?”

It was the year 2005 and one of the greatest songs in the Rock genrewas released with it’s dark lyrics and equally dark video “Rip Out theWings of a Butterfly”. I had the pleasure of asking Ville Valo aka thelead singer of the band HIM and best friend of Bam Margera on thestory behind such a soul capturing song. “What inspired your biggestand best single, Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly?” “I think it was aboutimmortality in some aspects. I read about souls and having the wings ofa butterfly. It was about mortality and immortality and everything inbetween and it was a messy time in my life. I remember writing it in thebeautiful sunset in the yard of the mansion where we recorded thealbum. I did a lot of stuff on why I really like going with the flow, sometimes it takes years to understand what you just wrote about butit’s usually more or less about ladies and my bad luck with them”.

“Where did the inspiration for One Hundred Fifty Five come from?”“That’s a song that we wrote way back in the day when we were stilldoing cover songs, and still just touring Michigan before we actually gotout into the open. It was one of those things where as a band we justfelt like no matter what we did we were just kinda beating our headsagainst the wall. Trying to make it or break it like a lot of bandsexperience and felt like we were just going full throttle and the onlything that kept us going was the music.”

“Where did the name Pop Evil come from?”“Pop Evil kinda reflects the guys in the band, like the diversity betweenthe guys. Pop being one extreme and evil being the other. It alsoreflects our music too, Monster You Made is more of a ballad that iseasier going like the pop side, and we also have our evil side like TheLast Man Standing and Trenches. We wanna have that diversity tohave to do anything versus just being one genre.”

“How did you all meet?”“We were all in different bands but within the same area. We werewithin like an hour of Grand Rapids and were all in local bands and wesorta pick and chose guys from this band and that band and anotherband and slapped it together man.”

“What advice would you give to upcoming bands?”“The best advice I could give is song writing. There’s a lot of bands Isee on the road up and coming. They’ve got their look and their showlooking great but the only thing lacking is the songs. That’s really whatwe all do this for you know, you write good songs and you just focus ongood songs writing and stuff that people can relate too that either has agood message or really any message. As long as you do it in a goodway it will catch on and rise up.”

“What inspired your new album?”“There’s a lot of stuff that happened between the last album and thisone. We switched labels, we went through changes in our line up, someband members quit, we had a band member get hurt and he wasparalyzed for a little while after surgery. We’ve lost loved ones and sowe had a lot of angst to get off our chest and that’s really where theinspiration was driven from and you can definitely hear it in the lyrics onthis one.”

“How does it feel to be playing this weekend with bands like Megadeth,Avenge Sevenfold, etc.”“It feels really, really good. It’s an honor we got to play here last year.We opened up the first stage last year and now we get to open up themain stage this year. So things are progressing and this past year hasbeen really good for us and this is a nice big good step in the rightdirection.”

“What was it like all living together under the same roof?”“What do you think it was like? It’s good, it’s working out. We’re nothome a lot so when we get home it’s pretty relaxed we all go to ourcorners and do our own thing to take a little break. It’s good, it was theway to go and we don’t regret anything.”

“How did you all meet?”“We’re all transplants to L.A. we all came from other places.”“Where did you two come from specifically?”“I’m from Denver.” “I’m from Italy, I moved here 5 years ago.”“We met in L.A. and it was just like putting together a dream team. It wasreal obvious real quick. Within a month we were putting an albumtogether and living together and we really put 100% in it. We made ithappen, we scrambled we lived poor but we made it happen.”

“You have a new song out tell us about it.”“We just released Stardust so request that on the radio! We don’t have anext big song picked out right now but we’re focusing our energy on thisand we hope everyone loves it.”

“Where did your inspiration come from for Stardust?”“Everything. We put it together with the attention of reaching everycorner of what we sound like. We tried to condense it into one song andthat’s how Stardust came about.”

“What would you tell your fans reading this?”“Stay in school. Listen to your parents. Don’t do drugs, don’t get tattoos, tattoos are for bad guys.”“Coming from a guy covered head to toes in tattoos haha”“Just be careful out there, it’s not an easy world. I’m talking with myheart right now. Listen to your father and listen to your mother becausethey really are right.”“Unless they’re tying you in a dungeon or something then call theauthorities.”

“What can fans expect for 2014 from The Alpha Complex?”“After Motograter broke up I wanted to focus on something verymarketable with a heavy punch because that’s not the direction we weregoing with Moto and that’s the direction I wanted to go with. So firstthings first I made sure I was putting the right musicians in the rightplaces to give me the kinda music I’m expecting out of my band. A lot ofmelody a lot of heavy grooves, really catchy hooks and big big guestvocals. I can’t release that yet but it’s a very well known vocalist and alot of touring non stop.”

“Will you be coming to Arizona?”“Absolutely coming to Arizona. Love Arizona, we used to play Chasersand The Clubhouse. Good people and great place for music.”

“How did you know to form a band together or to pick those bandmembers?”“Basically I scattered out for a while who I wanted to be in the band, Ireally wanted to make the right decisions. I knew if he was available, oneof my best friends from a local band I had in Denver, if he was available Iwas gonna pick up a guitarist and he was so I moved him out here withmy wife and I. And so he’s living out here with us, it’s a tight squeeze butit’s working. You’ve got to sacrifice for your music. The music comesfrom a lot of my inspirations so I want to make sure you’re a showmanand able to really perform on stage.”

“Where did your own personal musical inspiration come from?”“I’m a big fan of a lot of these bands that we’re seeing out here today atAftershock. Motograter was obviously a big inspiration before I was evenin it, because Ivan Moody was the original singer and he’s now singingfor Five Finger Death Punch. Linkin Park and any of those bands whoplay something real that you can relate to and become a part of.”

“What advice would you give to upcoming bands?”“You’ve got to be willing to sacrifice and throw it all away and give yourlife to it. Advice to the fans of these bands is be honest. If your friendsband sucks tell them so it fixes their sound and they can becomesomething great. You want them to fix their sound vs be crap and livingon the streets thinking you sound good when you don’t. Work hard anddo it yourself, I’m out here passing out 5,000 flyers because I’m strivingto be something.”

“How did you meet Ivan?”“I met Ivan when I was in some local bands in Denver. He’s a really cooldude, I actually joined Motograter after he left. I knew a friend who knewa friend and then I met Ivan a couple of times since then. He’s greatinspiration to myself and bands who are up and coming too.”

“Where did the inspiration for Soldiers come from?”“It came from the fac that at one point in the summer of 2011 we thoughtabout quitting. My brother and I had been at it for so long winning everyband battle and opening up for everyone and we just didn’t know whatto do and were banging out heads against the wall. But then we thoughtabout the men and women of our military and what they go through andhow they don’t give up they just keep fighting. So we used thatinspiration to keep ourselves going and keep ourselves motivated. Iguess it’s poetic justice that that ended up being the song that broke usinto the national scene and we made history with it on satellite radio. Our cousin Ivan Patrick sings on the song he came in and recorded withus right before he passed away. So it’s a special song for us and weregrateful that it’s special for so many people.”

“For our military members reading this is there anything you’d like to sayto them?”“All we can say is thank you. What you guys do, you guys are muchbraver human beings than we are and we just want to say thank you.”

“Of all the places you’ve performed what is your favorite memory?”“We’re Vegas boys, all our favorite memories for the most part are athome. But there’s some really good ones. We played both rock on theranges and Incubus invited us side stage to watch them perform andthey’re one of our favorite bands.”

“Who are some of your favorite bands to perform with?”“Oh man, we love playing with In This Moment especially me becausewe did a duet together which is called The Promise which was our firstintroduction to the radio and the nation for us, POD we’re on tour withright now. The first time my brother and I ever got in a mosh pit togetherwas at a POD show in Vegas. Papa Roach is an amazing live band,we’re excited to see Megadeth.”

“If there were something you could tell up and coming bands what wouldyou tell them?”“Well Chris from In This Moment once told me don’t quit. Because if youquit you’ll never know. We took that advice and we went with it. So don’tquit and don’t suck.”

A new venue opened up on the west side for the folks who want to enjoymusic, but don't have the money or the gas to drive out to Tempe orDowntown Phoenix every weekend. Introducing Axiom Venue, started upby twin brothers Lance and Gavin Linderman to bring the music lovers ofWest Phoenix together.

Axiom is located just off of Bell Rd from the 101, tucked away behindthe Cracker Barrel and the car dealership. The venue serves as achurch on Sunday mornings, with both religious and secular showsoccupying the stage at night. You can expect food trucks in theparking lot supplying snacks and beverages, with no alcohol allowed tokeep the allages shows alive.

The Grand Opening Weekend took place October 1213 with shows onboth nights. The evening I went to celebrate was October 12th, where Iwas graced with the musical presence of Ryne Norman, Saddles,Bentley, and The Cold Desert, all bands that reside on the west side andhave supported the Lindermans in building this venue.

Ryne Norman started the night strong. Never mind his musical talent;his songwriting talent is the spotlight of his set. For a young guy(and by young, I mean under 25 years old), he has the chops to perfecta catchy hook and melodies that make people dance and get the songsstuck in your head. My favorite song of his set was about hisgreatgrandmother, who his father went to for his candyandsoda, caffeineandsugar fix. The song is a bluesy, rockandroll song thatstands out from the rest of his driving rock set. It sounds likeyou're listening to an old blues song from the 50's; like Fonze wouldpunch the jukebox, flip up his collar as the song started, and grabsome ponytailed, blueeyes darling by the waist and dance with her asRyne Norman sang about his greatgrandmother. Weird, but that's whatmusic doesit gets your imagination going.

Page 31: Epic Entertainment Magazine

The next band to take to the stage was Saddles, a synthrock band thathas expanded from its folkAmericana roots in the past few years. Theyplayed songs from their latest album, Shell Art, that is guaranteed toget stuck in your head. One thing that captured my attention was theway frontman Charles Barth interacted with the audience betweensongs.

He awkwardly invited people to purchase merch by stating "We so toteshave stuff to sell." The crowd laughed and eventually made their wayto the table after the set. I personally liked their songs "CancerDance" and "The Original" best. "Cancer Dance" has that nostalgic 80'sdreamsynth that is so familiar, but not in Phoenix rock bands today."The Original" engages the audience with a group chant at the end thatis so catchy, it's no wonder they ended their set with that song.

Bentley's set started off with frontman Micah Bentley performing twoacoustic songs, both of which were beautiful in their raw nature. Heinvited the rest of the band onstage to play the rest of the set, which was punchier and more rockdriven than the previous bands.Micah told stories of their time on tour and introduced the songs clearly, instead of the usual "This next is called Blehhhaammmppphhh. I hopeyou enjoy it," that most bands are guilty of. My favorite song oftheirs will always be "Let There Be Light", mostly because Micah beltsout the word "light", that I imagine God belting it out on the firstday: "Let there be liiiiiiiiiiiiiight!" It's a power song, thatdemands your attention.

The night ended with The Cold Desert, starting their set with "Money".The song begins with vocals and a Rhodes piano: no countoff, noinstrumental introduction. Just Matt Klassen singing and Cody Nelsonaccompanying. After taking the summer off to rewrite material and playout of town, the boys came back to the west side prepared to performwholeheartedly. Matt engaged the audience with his dancing andstepping down to sing to the audience. They even played a new song forthe audience that was much anticipated.

Music aside, the atmosphere of the venue made the show even better. Istepped outside between sets to talk to friends and get fresh air, because the weather was so beautiful and the candlelit tables added amore intimate ambience. The venue is simple: no seating, no bar, noage separation. Simplicity is just what you need for an allagesvenue. You can catch the next show at Axiom Venue on November 22with Rare Monk.

MMyy ttoopp 1100 hhoorrrroorr ffiillmmssbbyy AAddaall RRoobblleessMaking a top 10 list of horror movies is no easy task. There's so many horror genre films,it's hard to pick the best so I decided to release my choices for this top 10. These arepicked by just me as a fan.1. Psycho (1960) A great Alfred Hitchcock classic that revolutionized horror films. I firstsaw it through a remake as a child on tv and I admit it wasn't as good. It wasn't until Iwatch the original I realized that it's way better than the Gus Van Sant remake. Oh, andthe shower scene... That was epic. I recommend it for a horror film fan or a fan of justmovies.2. Friday the 13th the title says it all. Jason voorhees is what made the movie a great, legendary horror film. That film revolutionized the slasher genre that spawned manythroughout the 1980s and beyond. This makes anyone think twice before going to thecamp for the vacation in the summer.3. A Nightmare on Elm Street Another classic slasher horror film. What separates the filmfrom the rest is the main villain, Freddy Krueger played by the one and only RobertEnglund. Whenever someone dreams, he comes by and kills anyone who falls asleep.Truly a trip, but awesomeness in its own right.4. Dawn of the Dead (the remake) Its hard for me to decide which ones better: theoriginal or the remake. But I decided to go with the remake. Sure it wasn't as innovative asthe Romero classic, but this film focused strictly on horror and terror. For this, I appreciateit even more.5. The Shining A Kubrick classic. Even though it didn't follow Stephen King's book well, but it's more crazy and horrifying and anything else I've seen at the time. Jack Nicholsoncan do no wrong as the hotel carekeeper who lost his mind and trying to kill his family.Great stuff without a doubt.6. Audition this horror movie from Japan exceed many expectations and then some. Thefirst time I watched it, it was the most unbelievable, crazy, and more horrific then any otherJapanese film I saw. The scene where the guy gets tied up in the sack definitely got mesick. Its definitely interesting to watch for just once.7. Saw When I first saw that movie, my reaction was, "Wow, that's an original". I wasabsolutely right because its nothing like I ever seen in any horror film in existence. Twomen are trapped in a room by a psychotic cancer patient with a puppet, trying to find away out even if it means cutting through feet. I know it's something crazy and unexpected, but with a film like this, it's what people expect and more. 8. The Ring A scary film basedon the Japanese horror classic, "Ringu". One thing that struck me was the plot in the film.A woman discovered a VHS tape and it brought a terrifying message that if anyonewatches, she or she dies. Truly a mind tripper of a film and this remake really got it right.9. Halloween Two words: timeless terror. Michael Myers is definitely no expecting to thisclassic horror gem and face mask resembling William shatner was unforgettable. After hekilled his sister, he escaped the mental institution and started killing everybody in sight. Avery horrifying gem that every horror fan should see and add it to the collection.10. American Psycho I first saw it back in 2000 when I was 13 year old kid and watchedit on TV and it was a crazy mind trip. What hit me was when Patrick Bateman talked aboutmusic to his victims, it sent chills down my spine and scared me. Christian bale did atremendous job on bringing this evil character from the Bret Easton Ellis book to life andhis look is simply scary. Although its not the best horror movie, it seriously brought manyscars and chills on everything.
