Ensuring Success For Each Student
HENRY COUNTY SCHOOLSTALENTED AND GIFTED PROGRAM
ADVANCED CONTENT GIFTED DELIVERY MODEL
Year 1 Year 2 Austin Road Elementary Cotton Indian Elementary Dutchtown Elementary Mount Carmel Elementary New Hope Elementary Pate’s Creek Elementary Unity Grove Elementary Walnut Creek Elementary Woodland Elementary
Bethlehem Elementary East Lake Elementary Flippen Elementary McDonough Elementary Pleasant Grove Elementary Red Oak Elementary Smith Barnes Elementary Stockbridge Elementary Timber Ridge Elementary
WHY A NEW MODEL OF DELIVERY? Students in the current model are only receiving a total of
5 hours of service per week. Student achievement scores have been decreasing over
the last three years There are a significant number of gifted students who are
not meeting standard on the writing assessment Under the current SAGE model students are missing 20%
of their instructional year for activities disconnected from standards based instruction
WHAT DOES ADVANCED CONTENT MEAN?
Advanced content really means acceleration and increasing the depth and breadth of information that your students will be learning.
Students will be clustered into like minded groups taught by a gifted certified teacher
These teachers will accelerate the Mathematics and English/Language Arts curriculum at each grade level
They will explore and master the standards at their current grade level and 25% of the next grade
In addition they will select projects and research topics that will enhance their learning of these standards
Learning & Leadership Services
HOW WILL THIS BENEFIT MY STUDENT IN FUTURE GRADES? As the content continues to accelerate, students will have
the ability to be placed in high grade level content. For example, in 5th grade a student could be working completely on 6th grade math, by 8th grade they could be taking Accelerated Coordinate Algebra for High School credit, in High School they could take Advanced Placement Calculus AB as a Junior and AP Statistics or Calculus BC as a Senior.
In high school grades students will have the potential to create their own internships and learning experiences through a secondary resource class.
WHAT ELSE WILL MY STUDENT RECEIVE? Students will receive additional service in the areas of
Science and Social Studies through cluster peer groups. This means that students in their grade level taught by a
gifted certified teacher will modify the content to provide deeper and engaging activities that will help students master and excel in these subjects
Teachers will supplement the instruction with research, reading, writing, and hands on activities
Additionally, for an hour per day students will receive an hour of self directed and teacher aided exploratory time.
Students will receive a Personal Learning Plan that will set specific academic, social, and emotional goals with stated strategies to meet those goals
Learning & Leadership Services
WHAT IS EXPLORATORY TIME? Exploratory will essentially replace the current resource
time that students are receiving now. Instead of a single 5 hour day, students will now receive
an hour per day, 5 days a week. During this time students will be able to self select
activities and projects that are meaningful to them and are related to the material that they are learning in class.
This could be a time when students engage in the projects that they selected as a part of any of the core subject areas, further work on science or social studies fair projects, or to receive additional individualized enrichment or remediation
Learning & Leadership Services
PUSH IN SUPPORT A final component of the Advanced Content Delivery
Model is the support that the teachers and students will receive
Gifted Support Teachers will be identified and will support each of the schools offering this model of instruction
They will work directly with each of the gifted grade level teachers to help create and deliver high level rigorous and engaging instruction, work directly with students to set goals, work on the previously mentioned self selected projects, and to aid in enrichment
Learning & Leadership Services
BOTTOM LINE The current single day 5 hour resource SAGE class is
