What is energy??
Energy is the ability to do work.We use energy every day.For example, when we cook, watch TV, ride our bikes, and when we turn on our lights.
Potential energy Potential energy is
stored energy and the energy of position
(Chemical, nuclear)
Kinetic energy Kinetic energy is
motion of waves, objects etc.
(Thermal, sound, motion)
Chemical EnergyIs stored in atoms
•Batteries, biomass, petroleum, natural gas, and coal are examples of stored chemical energy. •Chemical energy is converted to thermal energy when we burn wood in a fireplace or burn gasoline in a car's engine.
Radiant Energyis electromagnetic energy that travels in transverse waves.
•Radiant energy includes visible light, x-rays, gamma rays and radio waves.•Light is one type of radiant energy•Sunshine is radiant energy, which provides the fuel and warmth that make life on Earth possible.
Motion Energyis energy stored in the movement of objects.
•Wind is and ex ample of motion energy.
Gravitational energyis energy stored in an objects
height.
•An example of gravitational energy is hydropower.
Nuclear energy is stored in the nucleus of an atom — the energy that holds the nucleus together.
Energy
•Very large amounts of energy can be released when the nuclei are combined or split apart.•Nuclear power plants split the nuclei of uranium atoms in a process called fission.•The sun combines the nuclei of hydrogen atoms in a process called fusion.
Electrical energy delivered by tiny charged particles called electrons, typically moving
through a wire.
•Lightning is an example of electrical energy in nature, so powerful that it is not confined to a wire.
Thermal Energy, or heat, is the vibration and movement of the
atoms and molecules within substances.
•As an object is heated up, its atoms and molecules move and collide faster. •Geothermal energy is the thermal energy in the Earth.
Sources of energy Renewable source Renewable energy
source can be used over and over again.
(wind, sun, water)
Non-renewable source
If we use up all our non-renewable energy sources then they can be gone forever.
(oil, natural gas, coal)
Energy conservation vs. Energy efficiency.
Energy conservation
We can conserve energy by turning off our lights. Every time we are using less energy we are also conserving energy.
Energy efficiencyEvery time we use a
product that allows us to use less energy we are being energy efficient. When we use fluorescent light bulbs we use less energy but gut the same amount of light if we would use incandescent bulb
The law of conservation of energy.
Energy can not be created nor destroyed, every time we use energy it does not disappear instead it changes from one form of energy in to another form of energy.
Convection,Radiation,Conduction
When the sunlight comes to earth its called convection. Some of this sunlight will reflect back to space and it is called radiation. Sometimes this heat gets trapped in the atmosphere causing conduction.
How can natural gas be transformed into electricity?
Natural Gas•Natural gas can be burned to produce hot combustion gases that pass directly through a turbine, spinning the turbines blades generates electricity.•These are called gas turbines.
