Setin1968,thenewseriesofthe InspectorMorse prequelwillcompriseofanextendedrunofsixfeature-lengthfilms,andseesacclaimedactorShaunEvansreturnastherecentlypromotedDetectiveSergeantEndeavourMorse.
WitheachfilmonceagainwrittenbyseriescreatorRussellLewis,thenewseriesbeginswithMorsehavingfinallypassedhis Sergeant’sexamsjustasOxfordCityPolicemergesintoThamesValleyConstabularycreatinguncertaintyforeveryoneatCowleyCID.AnddespiteJoanThursday(SaraVickers)returntoOxford,muchalsoremainsunresolved followingherdisappearancethepreviousyearandEndeavour’sunexpectedproposal.

Priortothenewseries,themostrecentfilmsairedinJanuary2017,markingthe30thanniversaryof InspectorMorse onITV.Theyreceivedcriticalpraiseandimpressiveviewingfigures,despitestrongcompetitiononBBCOne.Thefirstepisode,whichairedonSunday8January,pulledinaconsolidatedratingof6.8mand24%share,whichisthebiggestaudiencesince2014andupon theyearonyearaveragebyhalfamillionviewers.

FilmingstartedjustafterMorsecreatorColinDexter’sdeath.Hemustbemuchmissed?
“Forus,hewasour truenorth.Ihopeeverythingwe’vedonehonours hiscreationandhisspirit.Heisstillapresenceforus.HisinitialcreationofMorseandthenitbeingturned intotelevisionfrom1987onwards,weneverforgetthatforaminute.That’swhatkeepsusatit.Wedon’twanttolethisstandards,andthestandardsofthethreeshows– Morse,LewisandnowEndeavour– todrop inanyway,shapeorform.‘WhatwouldColindo?’isourcridecoeur.

Was1968atimeofchangein thewiderworld?
“That’sabsolutelylacedthroughtheseries.1968 isthemostturbulentyear–fromstudentriotsinParistoPraguetoCivilunrestinAmericaandathome.It’sareallyinterestingyear.
“ThisseriesofEndeavourwillairexactly50yearsafteritwasset.Sowe’regoingfrom1968 to2018,andit’sacaseofplusçachange.Weliveinturbulent timesagainandthatcertainlyhasitsechoesin1968.There’safeelingofhandsacrosshalfacenturyinthehumanjourney.
“ThisreallyisthecomedownfromtheSummerofLove.Asournesshascreptin.ThatreachesCowleyandcertainlythelivesofourcharacters.Iwouldn’twantanyonetothink it’salldoomandgloom.Butthereisanunsettledairaboutthingsthroughout. It’sabigtimeofchangeforOxfordCityPolice.”

“We’vedrawnontheactualityofOxfordCityPoliceallthewaydowntheline.In1968OxfordCityPolice,alongwithOxfordCountyandtwootherlocalconstabularies,ceasedtoexistwhentheyweremergedinto- themorefamiliartoMorseviewers- ThamesValley.That’sahugechangefortheforceandforthecharacters.Itbringswithitacertainamountofuncertaintyastotheirfutures.“
DoesthisseriesrevealmoreaboutMorse’s relationshipswithwomen?
“Thisis1968.Ithought, let’stakethatandrunwithit.Ifyoucan’tbewiththeoneyou love,lovetheoneyou’rewith,asStephenStillssang.That’swhat’sbehindhisrelationshipswithwomeninthisseries.Butbecausehedoesn’tfitinandhiscompassastohisownpersonalrelationshipsisbroken,youalmostfeelhe’sdoingthesethingsbecausehefeelsheoughtto,ratherthanbecausehe’shugelymovedtodoso.
“Idon’tthink theyaremassiveaffairsoftheheart,but, likewiththebecomingasergeant,he’stryingtobethesameaseverybody else.Andhe’snevergoingtobe.
“JoanThursdayisstillpresentinthisseries.Forme,Joan’sjourneyisabsolutelycentral,becausewelefther insuchatoughplaceattheendofthelastrun,Iwantedtomake’68- ayearofrevolution - ayearinwhichshetookownershipofherownfate.Ratherthanasherfather’sdaughterorasEndeavour’spotentialloveinterest,Iwantedittobeabouther.Forme,that’sthebeatingheartofahugejourney fortheseries.”

“AlotofthewayheisfeelingaboutthefutureandretirementiscomingfromthechangeswithinOxfordCityPolice,theadventofThamesValley.Nowwe’rein1968,thingshavechangedforalloftheThursdayssincewefirstsawthemin1965,whentheywerealmosttheperfectfamily- mum,dad,son,daughter.
“Thekidshavenowlefthome,andit’sjustFredandWin.HeknowsheowesWintimebecausethejobandthewarhavehadthegreaterpartofhisadultlife,whichshehassharedwithhim.
“Nowit’s1968andthingsarechanginginthepoliceandathome.Sohe’sthinking,‘Maybethisistheend?It’stimetoretire.’TheendingoftheCityPolicehasclearlygottohimandpromptedastocktake.”
Thursdaymakesself-deprecatingremarksabouthowmuchheknows.Isthatanact?
“Fredisassavvyasyoulike.PartofhismentoringofEndeavouristolethimrun;nottocramphisstyle.Idothinkthereisadivisionbetweenthemprofessionally.Hisworldisrobbery,violence,theft,thewarpandweftofeverydaypolicinginacity.Thursdayisabsolutelyvitalandintegraltothesolvingofthembecausehe’sthoroughlydiligent.
“ButwhatIenjoyiswhentheybothcometothesameanswerviadifferentmeans.Endeavourwilldohisbygreatleapsoflogicandintuition,andThursdaywillgettherebyapplyinghimselftothefacts.

“InsevenyearstimetheywillbeTheSweeney.Soit’sjustfeatheringinsomepartofthatchangingoftheguard.AwayfromthatDixonofDock Green,slightlyZcarssetup thatwehadtolessscrupulouscoppers.Theysetthecatamongthepigeonswithaverydifferentpolicingstyle.
“Thereisaheritagecharacterinthereamongstthemwhichtheeagle-eyedwillspot.Becauseit’sgotsucharichhistory, it’snicetobeallowedtoplaywithsomeofthosecharactersatanearlierpoint intheirlife.Youdon’twanttogooverboardwithit,butit’sfuntodo.”
Whatwasinyourmindwhenwritingabout immigrationprotestsin1968?
“Thiswasanissuein1968whichfeltvery relevanttoourowntime.LookingatPathe Newsreels,iftheyweren’tinblackandwhiteandcouched incivilisedterms,itcouldhavebeenshotthisyear.We’vealwaystriedtoreflectsocialchangeandtheprevailingclimateinthecountryaseachyearhasgoneby.Andin1968thatwasamassiveissue.”
SomefansarefascinatedbythedifferentdailysandwichesWinmakesforFred.Didthatcomeasasurprise?
“Itgrewverynaturally.Myoldmanusedtogoofftoworkinafactorywithhissandwicheswrappedupingreaseproofpaper.SoitsprangfromthatandIgrafteditontotheThursdays.It’sasmallactofWin’saffectionthatshekeepshiminsarnies.Allpre-MarksandSparksandtheprawnmayorevolutionoftheearlier‘80s.”
Theylistwhichsandwich fillingsWingivesFredoneachdayoftheweek.ButWednesday’sremainsamystery?
“TheholygrailisWednesday.Wehavementionofa‘MidweekSpecial’inthenewseries.Theremightbeacertainpoetry toitwhenever theseriesfinallycomestoanendthatwefinallyfindoutwhat’sintheMidweekSpecial.Let’swaitandsee.
“It’sweird.People justpickeduponit.It’smentionednowandagain.Andit’sfunthatwe’vebeenabletomakeitstandformorethanjustasandwich.We’vehadtimeswhereFredisoffhissandwichor,heavenforbid,Winhasn’tmadeit.That’sseismicinour littleworld.Abigevent.”

“ThegreatfunofthatwasIgottoseetherehearsalvideosasthedancecametogether.It’sverymuchpartofThursdaylookingtothefuturewithWin.Thereisromancetherewiththosetwostill.That’sverymuchpartoftheirongoingstory.”

“Itwasharderthanitlooksfindingasuitablecinema- exteriorandinterior.ItcertainlyrepresentsthecinemasIrememberfrombeingakid.RatherlikeBurridge'sdepartmentstore,thesupermarketandthehospital.”
Youalsofeaturethe1960s’UKandEuropean TVgameshowJeuxSansFrontières?
“Itseemedtooobviousathingtooverlook. Theartdepartmentrosetothechallenge.Wegotperiodoutsidebroadcasttrucks thatarefunctional,whichwasquiteexciting.There’sabunchofretiredtelevisionengineersthathavefundedandputtogetheranumberofthesevehiclesthatareoperational,withtheiroriginalcameras.Soweusedthose,withpropervisionmixinggoingon.Thatsetstheballrollingonadifferentkindofstory.”
WhydoesEndeavourcollectThursdaybycarfromhomeeveryday,whenThursdaycould drivetoworkhimself?
“Thejoyofrank.Thursdayisabigdog.Andhedeservesnoless.It’sverymuchpickinguptheguv’nor.Andit’snotabaddeviceintermsofsettingupstory.As

charactersit’salsoalittlespecialtimethat’sjusttheirown.Then, inthisseries,youhaveDSJimStrangegoingtogethim.ThatsayssomethingaboutthecurrentstateofEndeavourandThursday’s relationship,professionalandsometimespersonal.SoifEndeavourisn’ttheretopickhimup there’sgottobeareasonforit.
“We’vedoneenoughofthemnowthattheaudienceareveryfamiliarwiththerhythmofthethingandthebeatswehitweekin,weekout.Sowhenyouchangethose,hopefullyitmeanssomethingtothemasmuchasitdoestouswhenwe’rebuildingthestory.IfStrangeispickingupThursdaythere’ssomethingnotrightintheworld.”

“SometimesI’llspecifysomeclassicalpieces,butmostlywe’llleaveittoBarringtonPheloung whohasreturned todotwoscoresinthemiddleoftherun,orMatthewSlaterwhoisdoingone, two,fiveandsix.TheyaretremendouslyinventiveandcreativeincomingupwithnotonlytheclassicalstuffandtheirownwonderfulscoresbutthingslikebogusTVthemes.
“Everybody reallylovesgoingtothemusicrecordingsbecauseusuallyit’satAbbeyRoadinLondon.And,ofcourse,you’reonholyground there.It’slikeapilgrimagetogointhere.Whatthosewallshavecontainedisextraordinary.TheWhiteAlbumbyTheBeatleswasreleased50yearsagoinNovember1968andthatwasverymuchinourmindsaswesetoutonthisseries.‘Yousayyouwantarevolution?Well,youknowweallwanttochangetheworld.’

“TherewassomethingbrilliantabouthavingColinonhand.Whenwefirststartedhe’dgothroughallofthescriptswithafine-toothcomb,notunlikemyself.Andhewasn’tbackwardincomingforwardaboutexpressinghisopinions.Wewerevery fortunatetohavethat.”

“That’sabsolutelyright.Thereisasenseofendingsandnewbeginnings.We’renowin1968andOxfordCityPoliceisgoingtobeamalgamatedaspartofThamesValleyPolice.SoCowleyPolicestation,asweknow it,isthreatenedwithclosurewhenalloftheofficerswouldgooffinseparatedirections.

“JoanThursdayisstillpartofthestory.Hisinvolvementwithotherwomenisasubconsciousknee-jerkreactiontothehistorybetweenhimandJoan.He’stryingtofindhisplaceintheworldandwhohe’sgoingtospenditwith.

“Ididn’tknowthesandwicheshadsuchafollowing.That’sreallyfunny.ButI’mdelightedtheaudiencegetssoinvolved init.Itjustshowshowmuchtheycareabouttheshow.”

Howdoyoureflectonthe facttheaudience reallydo lovethisseries?
“It’stestimonytoallofthepeoplewhomakeEndeavour, thewriterRussellLewisandalloftheactorsinvolved.Alsotheproducers,directors,costume,makeupandtheguestartists.EveryonebringstheirtopgametoEndeavour.We’reverylucky. I’mgladpeople loveitbecausethat’sour intention.”
Whatisthefuture forEndeavour?
“Thisseriesdefinitelysetsupmoreforareturn.Therearelotsofquestionstoanswer,buttherearelotsoffactorsinvolvedsoyou justtakethisjobonedayatatime.
“I’vebeenvery luckytoplaythisrole.I’mamazedwe’vedonesomanysofar.IfeelverygratefulthatEndeavour isstillpopularanddoingwell.I’malsoverygratefultohavetheopportunity toworkwithsomeincrediblepeople.
“We’vemadesixfeaturelengthfilmsthistimeandkeptthequalityoftheworkup.That,initself,iscauseforcelebration.Ifwe’reluckyenoughtodosomemore,andweallwantto,that’sgreat.But,ifnot,we’reallveryproudoftheseries.”
Isthereanelementofendingsandnewhorizons in thisseries?
“Yes,Ithinkso.Certainlythepolicestoryisabout thepossibleimminentclosureofOxfordCityPoliceandtheamalgamationintoThamesValley.Thethreatoftheteambreakingup.WhileMorseandThursdayhavethesamerelationship,theyarenot togetherasmuchastheyusedtobe.
“AlsowithThursday’sdaughterJoanreturning,relationsarenotback tonormalbetweenherandThursdaybecausesheisestablishingherindependence,andhissonSamisawayintheArmy.There’safeelingthatwhatusedtobethecase,thattheThursdayhouseholdwasthiswarmfamily- that’snowbreakingapartaswellandchanging.”

“ThursdayisveryresistanttotheprospectofbeingkickedupstairsanddoingadeskjobwhenOxfordCityPoliceisamalgamated.That’snotwhatattractedhimaboutthejob.SoretirementisimminentandWiniscertainlymakingplansforwhenthatdaycomes.
“There’sanincreasingsenseinthisseries– asIthinkhappenswitheverygeneration– thattherecomesapointinyour lifewheresuddenlythingsseemtohavemovedonandtheworldhasbecomeadifferentplacetotheoneyouunderstoodwhenyouwereayoungadult.
“InFred’scase,thewholethingofgettingthroughthewarandbuildinganewlifeinBritainafterwardsnowseemstobebeingquestionedandunderthreat.Iguessthatwouldbesomethinghemightnotquiteunderstand.
“What’srepresentedalsowithhisrelationshipwithhisdaughterJoanisthatthingschange.Theydon’t staythesame.
