GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE

DeANNEHAMILTONExecutive Director/ General Manager
On August 21, the United States will be the only geo-graphical region on Earth to experience what is being called the Great American Total Solar Eclipse. How lucky we are to witness this once-in-a-lifetime event! Speculation about the nature of these celestial events include the ancient Chinese belief that a great mythical dragon was devouring the sun, but by 20 BCE, astron-omers in China realized the true nature of the solar eclipses and were able to predict them.
We’ve come a long way from banging drums and pots during eclipses to frighten dragons away, but our fas-cination with the far reaches of outer space in relation to our own planet hasn’t waned. You can learn more about this month’s remarkable cosmic occurrence on NOVA: Eclipse Over America, Tuesday, August 29 at 8 p.m. on KBTC.
There is no better place on the dial than KBTC to jour-ney to the frontiers of science and the natural world. Likewise, KBTC is the best place to explore our heritage – rich with tradition and discoveries yet to be brought to light.
Educational, groundbreaking programs that you enjoy each week like NOVA and Nature as well as insightful, inspiring specials like The Power of Myth with Joseph Campbell are just a few examples of the programs your support of KBTC makes possible. And when you choose to make a donation to KBTC, you are saying loudly and clearly that access to science, history, culture… as well as the arts, great literature and public affairs are important to your community.
It is with your annual support that we are able to deliv-er this essential content to you, your family, and your neighbors here in Western Washington.
We admire your commitment and we, in turn, honor it by remaining true to the PBS mission everyday – to educate, inspire, entertain and express the diversity of perspectives.
So, look to the sky with amazement and wonder this month, and remember look to KBTC for even more ways to explore your world!
