Dear Parents, Children and Friends,
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
I was delighted with the amount of
community support that was evident in the
days following the storm recently. Whilst
most families and staff still had clean-up
work to do around their own homes and
neighbourhood, a good number found time
to come down to the school on Sunday
afternoon to assist in the clean up here.
A great amount was achieved, with the
school being cleaned up and ready to open
when power was restored on the following
Tuesday. Thank you to everyone who
helped out! Most of the damage around the
school involved fallen trees and torn shade
sails, with no structural damage occurring.
AGM
There was a pleasing turnout of parents and
staff members at our AGM last Wednesday
evening. I would like to thank all those who
attended and particularly acknowledge
those who took on voluntary roles for
2018. Your generosity in giving up your
personal time to assist our school is greatly
appreciated. Our School Board for 2018
will be made up of Terrence Winner
(Chairperson), Rachael Vollmer (Secretary),
Fiona Hills-Wright (Treasurer), Steven Foy,
Melanie Bairstow, Gary Sim, Fr Matthew
Hodgson and Lisa Gallin. A Parish Council
representative and P&F representative are
still to be nominated.
Our P&F was also announced and our
Executive Committee is made up of Jade
Brown (President), Lisa Fardell (Vice-
President), Chelsea Square (Treasurer) and
Eva Motherway (Secretary). I trust both
parent bodies will have a highly successful
2018!
END OF YEAR CONCERT
Plans are well in place for our Concert
evening next Tuesday, December 5, on

DEPARTING STAFF
A number of our staff are leaving Kalgoorlie at the
end of the year and spreading their wings.
Mrs Anastasia Yare and family are moving to Perth
after two years with us. We wish you the best of luck
for the move Anastasia and thank you for your fine
contribution to our school.
Mrs Bridget Moyo is moving all the way over to the
east coast of Australia in 2018. We thank Bridget
for her work at St Joseph’s this year. We will miss her
outgoing personality, colourful wardrobe, and
dedication to her Year 5 students. Best of luck
Bridget!
Miss Tenille Ryan has been with us for two years
and done an outstanding job in the field of Physical
Education and Health. Her attention to detail when
organising events has been a credit to her, as has her
commitment to the wider school community. Best
wishes for your move to Perth Tenille.
Mrs Kiona Craig moves with her family to Geraldton
after two years with us. Kiona can feel proud of her
achievements over this time, particularly with her
Year 3 class in 2017. I think the win in the Eisteddfod
would have to have been a highlight Kiona!
Mrs Elize Newberry took on the role of Visual Arts
teacher this year, and I highly commend her on the
work she has done with all classes. Elize, hopefully,
will not be totally lost to the school next year, as I
hope we see her again in the role of a relief teacher.
Miss Ashleigh Britt is moving back to Perth after four
years at Saint Joseph’s. Ashleigh has been integral to
the development of the use of technology within the
school, as well as the implementation of the 1-1 Ipad
program in the upper grades. Her dedication to
extra-curricular activities, including Wakakirri and the
Coding Club, has added much to the experiences
of the students. I thank you sincerely for your
outstanding contribution Ashleigh and wish you well
for both your move to Perth and upcoming marriage.
Finally Mr Luke Shaw has done a fantastic job as
Assistant Principal over the past four years and is
returning to Perth, taking up the role of AP at Francis
Jordan School in Currambine. Luke’s dedication to
Saint Joseph’s has been outstanding in all fields of his
leadership. He has committed great time and energy
to his role and can feel justifiably proud of all that the
school has achieved over this time. Many thanks Luke
and best wishes for an exciting 2018!
On behalf of the school community I wish all
departing staff every success in the future.
YEAR SIX GRADUATION
Next Wednesday will see us formally acknowledge our
departing Year 6 students at the Graduation Mass, final
Assembly and Graduation Dinner. I wish all of our
graduates every success for the future and thank them
for the mature way they have approached their
leadership responsibilities in their final year at
St Joseph’s. They have been excellent role models and a
credit to the school and their families. While it is sad to
see them leave it now provides the opportunity for our
leaders of 2018 to step up and try to emulate their
predecessors.
I would also like to wish all families who are finishing
their time at St Joseph’s at the end of this year best
wishes for whatever the future holds. Thank you for
your involvement in our school.
END OF YEAR CONCERT
Plans are well in place for our Concert evening next
Tuesday, December 5, on the school oval at 6.00pm. All
classes are taking part in what is wonderful way to finish
our school year.
FAREWELL
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone
in the St Joseph’s School community for their welcome
and support over this year. I have enjoyed coming to
know staff, students and parents, and will leave with
many fond memories. Saint Joseph’s is a very special
school, and I feel confident that it will continue to go
from strength to strength over the coming years. May
God send all in the school community every blessing
during the season of Advent, as we prepare for the
special event of our Saviour’s birth at Christmas!
SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT 2018
Students commence Term One next year on
Wednesday January 31. A more comprehensive term
planner is available on our website.
May God bless our school and those within it.
Mr Greg Wyss - Principal
SEMESTER TWO REPORTS
Semester Two reports will be available
online on Tuesday 5th December. Please see the
information in this newsletter regarding accessing
SEQTA.
Please take some time to sit with your child and read
their report, discussing their achievements and areas
for growth. I encourage you to read the Michael
Grose article ‘Reading your child’s report’, attached
to this week’s newsletter This information can also be
viewed in a short video at https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=8dQt5aTlTpc
If you have any questions regarding your child’s
report, please make a time to meet with their teacher.
Students from Years One to Six will be designated a
letter from A – E to indicate their progress. It is
important to remember that the grade will reflect the
level of achievement that is expected for that year
level for that point in time. The A – E grade scale
summarises the standard of achievement associated
with each learning area. The table below provides an
explanation of the achievement descriptor for each
letter grade.
It is important to note that the School Curriculum and
Standards Authority (SCSA) reporting policy indicates that
the allocation of a grade for an individual student should
describe the level of achievement that is expected for their
year level at that point in time. Students do not need
to be working ‘above their year level’ to achieve an
‘A’ grade. All schools in WA are bound by this
SCSA policy.
Students in Pre-Primary receive a description of their
achievement. The table below provides an explanation of the
achievement descriptions.
The descriptors summarise the standard of achievement
in each of the reported learning areas. The scale
describes the depth of knowledge, understandings and
skills that children working at that standard typically
show.
If your child receives an “expected”, they are achieving
at the required level for their year.
Maintaining a level in a learning area from one semester
to the next is an indication of positive achievement and
expected development.
SPEAK UP AWARDS
We recently held our St Joseph’s School Speak Up
Awards. Each student in Years 3-6 presented a three to
five minute speech to their class on a topic they are
passionate about with two finalists being chosen from
each class to compete in the recent Speak Up Awards
Grand Final. We congratulate the following students for
being selected to compete in the grand final.
Cameron Murphy
Liam Yare
Leslie Braven
Chloe Zorzi
Ava Horan
Jaymee Lightfoot
Jessica Flannery
Sipiwe Neeson
All speeches were of a high standard and we look
forward to continuing to develop high calibre speaking
and listening skills. We congratulate Chloe Zorzi (Years
3-4 winner) and Jessica Flannery (Years 5-6 winner) for
their achievements in winning their sections of the com-
petition.
MEET THE TEACHER
Meet the Teacher day will take place this Friday from
1.30-2.30pm. Much effort goes into selecting the staff
and matching staff to classes for the following year. It is
important for parents to work proactively with their
children during this process as change is an important
process in life and builds children’s resilience.

ADVENT REFLECTIONS
It is getting closer to that special time of year:
Christmas! Our Pre-Primary and Year Six students
will lead us in our final Advent Reflection on
Monday morning at 8:45am in the Kamballie
Grandstand. This the last opportunity for students
to bring in non-perishable goods for our Christmas
Drive to assist the needy members of our wider
community. Thank you in advance for your kindness
and support of this worthy cause.
CHRISTMAS CONCERT
We are all getting excited for the Christmas Concert
on Tuesday 5th December, commencing at
6.00pm. All classes will be singing two songs on the
night and will provide the community with the joy of
Christmas carols to assist with getting into the
Christmas spirit. Our Christmas play this year is titled
‘Born the King’ and a small number of students from
Years Five and Six have been rehearsing for their big
performance as lead actors. All students will need to
wear their black sport shorts, white sport socks,
runners and a Christmas themed shirt or red/green
shirt on the night of the Christmas Concert. This is a
compulsory school event and all students are
expected to arrive at the school oval by 5.30pm
to get prepared for the concert.
FINAL WEEK EVENTS
As we are approaching the final days of the school
year, our Year Six students are preparing for their
final days of primary school. We have some very
important events in the final week of term to
acknowledge our graduates and give thanks as a
community for all that we have received this year.
Our Graduation and Thanksgiving Mass will
commence at 9:30am on Wednesday 6th
December in All Hallows Church. I invite all
members of our school community to join us as we
farewell our Year Six students and reflect on 2017
(please be seated by 9:20am). Student leaders for
2018 will also be announced at this Mass.
Our Farewell Assembly will take place later that
day, commencing at 2:00pm in the Kamballie
Grandstand. Our Year Five students will lead this
final assembly, in which we will acknowledge our Year
Six students and departing staff. Again, I invite all
members of our community to share this occasion
with us.
Our Year Six graduates will also be celebrating into the
evening with their Graduation Dinner in the
Kamballie Grandstand, beginning at 6.00pm. We
have been blessed with a wonderful group of Year Six
students this year and I would like to wish every
graduate the very in all that they do.
FAREWELL
As this is our final newsletter for the year, I would like
to take this opportunity to say farewell to our school
community. My four years here at St. Joseph’s School
have been extremely rewarding, both professionally and
personally. Our school community is truly wonderful
and coming to work each day has been a joy.
We are blessed to have a dedicated staff, a supportive
community and such fantastic students. Seeing and
talking to our students each day is something I will truly
miss, but I will take many fond memories with me.
St. Joseph’s School really is a great school. Thank you
for everything and I wish you a happy Christmas break.

EDUCATION IN FAITH God of all blessings,
source of all life, giver of all grace:
We thank you for the gift of life:
for the breath that sustains life,
for the food of this earth that nurtures life,
for the love of family and friends
without which there would be no life.
We thank you for the mystery of creation:
for the beauty that the eye can see,
for the joy that the ear may hear,
for the unknown that we cannot behold filling
the universe with wonder,
for the expanse of space that draws us beyond
the definitions of our selves.
We thank you for setting us in communities:
for families who nurture our becoming,
for friends who love us by choice,
for companions at work, who share our
burdens and daily tasks,
for strangers who welcome us into their
midst,
for people from other lands who call us to
grow in understanding,
for children who lighten our moments with
delight,
for the unborn, who offer us hope for the
future.
We thank you for this day:
for life and one more day to love,
for opportunity and one more day to work for
justice and peace,
for neighbours and one more person to love
and by whom be loved, for your grace
and one more experience of your presence,
for your promise: to be with us,
to be our God, and to give salvation.
For these, and all blessings,
we give you thanks, eternal, loving God,
through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.
I have chosen a prayer of thanksgiving, as the
school year is coming to a close and it is
a perfect time to reflect on the year that has
been. As we are winding up and Christmas
celebrations are beginning, it is nice to
remember the joys, the struggles, the proud
moments, the celebrations, the challenges,
the achievements and the growth that
have occurred during 2017. It is also an
opportunity to appreciate who and what we
have and start looking forward to the time to
come. Take moments to relax during the
hectic lead up to Christmas and enjoy
reminiscing on the year that has been.
Miss Ashleigh Britt—Year 4 Teacher
