A Bombay Toastmasters Club Presentation
From Across The Globe...
Greetings Bombay Toastmasters Club members,
Toastmasters International helps people overcome challenges and con-
quer their fears. Consider what you have become as a result of partici-
pating in the Toastmasters program. Aren't you amazed at the transfor-
mation? Haven't you become a more confident, eloquent and successful
person? Haven't you become more willing to help others in and out of
your club environment? If you have, then join me in proclaiming the
theme for my term in office "Toastmasters: The Courage to Con-quer!"
The Toastmasters program helps us gain the courage to change. Wewere once self-conscious, hesitant members who have blossomed into
assertive, confident and passionate Toastmasters. Many of us began asnon-committed members and we changed to become efficient, capable
leaders in our organization and our communities. We started as groups
of people who hardly knew each other. Weconquered the initial dis-
comfort and now have dynamic and successful Toastmasters Clubs. As we change individually, we instill in
others the Courage to Conqueras well.
Our organization depends on members such as you to help more and more people develop theCourageto Conquerthrough the Toastmasters program. Thank you for all you do!
Warm regards,
Jana Barnhill, DTM, Accredited SpeakerToastmasters International President2008-2009

A Bombay Toastmasters Club Presentation
From Across The Country...
Friday, 1 February 2008, dawned as just another ordinary day in Mumbai.
But for Arun Vishwanath and for 24 others it was a red letter day. It wason this day that many months of persuasion, perseverance and patience
finally bore fruit. It was the day when Bombay Toastmasters Club, the
second community club of the city, was officially chartered by Toast-
masters International!
I remember visiting the Club soon after its charter. The atmosphere in
the club was electrifying with an unbridled enthusiasm to learn and grow.
It was clear to me that the club had the potential to be amongst the finest
clubs of the District. A year later I have reason to believe that my expec-
tation has become reality. In the first full year of its functioning, the club
has achieved Select Distinguished Club status by attaining seven of the ten
goals that measure a clubs performance. The club has attracted mem-
bers as a beacon of excellence and now has 39 paid members. Many of
its members have been involved in spreading the Toastmasters move-
ment across the city and have assisted in the charter of other clubs. Some
have even taken up leadership roles in the Division and Area and dis-
charged their duties with diligence and dedication.
It is now for President Brillian and his team of Executive Committee members to build a bridge of excellence
on the strong foundation that has been laid by Past Presidents Arun and Nazir. This bridge of excellence shall
ensure that every member of the Club develops confidence in their communication abilities, imbibes leader-
ship skills and be of service to each other in the club and outside.
I wish the club success and hope that 2009-2010 shall be the year when the club achieves all the ten distin-
guished club goals. As Aristotle said We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a
habit. The quest for excellence is never-ending. Make excellence a habit and pave your bridge to lead youto success.
Best wishes,
Deepak Menon, DTMDistrict 82 Governor2009-2010

A Bombay Toastmasters Club Presentation
From Across The State...Dearest Toastmasters,
I derive immense pleasure in welcoming the Newly Elected Executive Committee
of Bombay Toastmasters Club. I am sure it will be instrumental in helping BTM
reach astronomical heights.
Bombay Toastmasters Club positions itself uniquely as a leading community club
in Mumbai and in Area D5 of Division D. I see high levels of passion and commit-
ment among the members, which is indeed the driving force behind the success
of the club.
No one can deny the fact that we start communicating even before we are born.
Babies communicate with their mothers by kicking in the womb, telling them that
they are bored inside and want to come out and see the world! This is the
strongest mode of communication - the non verbal mode, which astonishingly
forms 93 per cent of our communication in comparison to the verbal aspects, which only is a mere 7 per cent. The non verbal aspects include facial expressions, postures, gestures, loco-
motion, etc.Studies have indicated that people working in any organisation spend 80 per cent of their time communicat-
ing. A recent study by a leading magazine rated Indian CEOs and executives as the worst communicators in
the world- a tag which no Indian would like to sport! The aim of Toastmasters International is to overcome
this tag and make public speaking a world wide reality. Our aim is to produce world-class speakers and
leaders.
Much of what happens in our own lives, our communities and the world at large depends upon how we
communicate. People differ greatly here, but probably most adults never recall some skills that they had
mastered before leaving elementary school. Toastmasters leads us on a journey of recall. It is thus, a great way
of serving the society. We contribute to the development of the human capital which is indeed the greatest
asset of every nation. I would like to thank each one of you for the wonderful work and great service you
are doing and I wish you a fruitful and a successful term ahead.
Happy Toastmastering!!

A Bombay Toastmasters Club Presentation
From Across The City...
Dear Toastmaster,
I am happy that you are part of the Toastmasters family in Mumbai andworking towards your Communication and Leadership Skills.
As a part of this wonderful club, I am sure you would be interested in
reading its history:
The leading Toastmasters from Doha, Qatar, Vijaya Monteiro was in Mumbai
in Dec 06 and called me (I was then President of TCS Maitree Toastmasters
Club) to check if she could visit my club. She also visited Mumbai Toastmas-
ters Club, which was then a provisional club. Since Mumbai is a big city, she
believed it was possible to start one more community based club. She had to
leave back to Doha in May 07. Despite her best efforts till then, a new
community based club could not be chartered by then.
The breakthrough happened when a member of the Trainers' Forum, Vaishnavi Vishwanthan, asked me to
post a message on the Forum floating the idea of starting a new Toastmasters Club. It clicked! A few people
responded positively. Dominic has offered his work space to conduct regular sessions. We conducted the first
demonstrative meet at Matunga, where I met Nazir Usman. To my question: Would you like to play a key
role in starting a new club? he responded, Certainly!
Things started moving at a fast pace since then. Nazir introduced Arun Vishwanath, who in turn fixed a
meeting at Trinity Academy (suggested by a prospective member). That meeting in Aug 07 was attended by
Arun, Nazir, Parveen, Girija, Dominic, Kasi (my colleague from TCS) and me. We have decided to have one
more demo meeting on 6 Oct 07. Since then, BTM has always had two sessions a month without fail.
The club got chartered in Feb 08. Ever since, it has blossomed under the able leadership provided by
Presidents Arun Vishwanath and Nazir Usman. Many members of BTM are now my good friends. I alwaysfound the leaders of BTM professional and easy to deal with. They have set a vision "to be the best club in
India" and have worked towards it. I have no doubt that the club will achieve President's Distinguished Club
award by March 2010.
I must mention my friends from BTM here:
Parul: I remember her entire Toastmasters journey. She was a guest at a TCS Maitree Toastmasters Club, when
she was employed at TCS. I had witnessed her ice breaker speech and I was the evaluator for many of her CC
projects. I am happy to see that my dear friend is now an Area Governor.
Dominic:He has a certain aura around him. The audience can rest assured that he brings in a bagful of
laughter. He always told me that I am a rather serious speaker. I am happy that now I at least make a serious
effort to entertain my audience.
Arun and Nazir:Meeting them in Aug 07 has proved to be the turning point for realizing the dream of
having one more community club in Mumbai. They have also worked hard to charter Mulund Toastmasters
Club when BTM was just eight months old.
Rukmini, Arvind and Brillian: I met them all after July 08. It is their enthusiasm which has made a big
impact on TM activities in Mumbai last year (2008-09). They all are involved in the capacity of sponsors or
mentors for the new corporate club at Colgate GSSO. I consider them to be good speakers and ideal
candidates for running TM activities.
I wish all of you the very best for your journey towards excellence in Communication and Leadership Skills.

For leaders, communication is a key aspect. Be it verbal, non-verbal the way you communicates makes a
world of difference. The difference lies in knowing HOW TO SAY IT! Toastmasters International providesyou with the opportunities to hone these skills. Focus on achieving goals which would help you become
better communicators and better leaders. Learning by doing is the mantra for a Toastmaster.

Share your stories, failures, encourage members to take up challenges. Thereby achieve a high level of satisfac-
tion. Achieve Distinguished Club status. I call upon all the Competent Communicators and Competent Lead-
ers to be a part of the BTM Advisory Team (BAT). BAT would be responsible to help members focus on
achieving the CC and CL track. Help BTM develop high quality speakers and leaders.

Traits of an Effective SpeakerSource: http://htsip.com/
Lets face it. Not many people are blessed with the gift of gab. Some even abhor the thought of having to facean audience to relate anything verbally. However, surely there are a lot of people who would like to master
this skill.
Public speaking is not an easy task. But the good news is that it is not impossible to learn how to be good at
it. How about learning the qualities of a good public speaker before going deeper into acquiring this precious
skill. Here are the traits that a person should learn or adopt if he or she is planning to become an effective
public speaker:
1. ResourcefulA public speaker cant merely rely on his or her stock knowledge. Knowing where to acquire new informa-
tion and how to get it so that he or she can relay them to his or her audience easily is one valuable quality of
an excellent public speaker. The preparation a good speaker makes does not end in his speech. Knowing anaudiences interests and level of knowledge is also a part of his resourcefulness.
Using props is something common with a speaker who is resourceful enough to know how some simple
visual aids or items can evoke more interest from his or her audience.
2. Always updating his or her knowledgeA very good public speaker is always thirsty for new information. He or she polishes her wisdom by reading,
attending seminars, or doing any other kind of activities that would enrich his or her knowledge.
3. HumorousOftentimes, its the sense of humor of the speaker that makes his or her speech a lot more easy to compre-
hend and remember. Incorporating a few jokes that would touch the interests of the listeners can very well
assist a speaker in conveying the message of his or her talk. No one loves a boring speaker.
4. ConfidentWho would enjoy listening to a stutterer just because he or she is not comfortable speaking in front of an
audience? When confidence exudes from a public speaker, the more enthusiastic the listeners become to
understand what that person can help them learn.
5. Has a way with wordsA public speaker cant be effective if he or she has a limited vocabulary stock. However, its not the wide
array of high-falluting terms that can make a speech fruitful. One should know how to use moving words.
Such are the words that touch a certain genre of people, e.g., hippies and hippie terms for those who have
lived in the era, jerks as something negative for the teenagers, etc.
