Overview/IntroductionBoxHillSecondaryCollegewantedanactivityinvestigatingelectriccircuitsinparallelandinseries.

Itisintendedthattheactivityherewoldbeembeddedinamoduleonelectriccircuitsandwouldextendoverseverallessons,withanintroductiontoelectriccircuitsinparallelandinseries,studentsworkinginteamstomakeapropellercar,andthentestingvariouscombinationsofbatteries(bothinparallelandinseries,oracombinationofparallelandseries),analysingresultsandcommunicatingtheirresults.

KeyConceptsElectriccircuit.Thesimplestelectriccircuithasapowersource(likeabattery)andsomeothercomponent(likeanmotororlight).Thepowersource(likeabattery)andothercomponent(s)areconnectedbywiressothewholecircuitformsacontinuousloop.Morecomplicatedelectriccircuitsmighthaveseveralpowersourcesand/orseveralothercomponentsconnectedinmorethanoneinterconnectingloops.

Parallel.Powersourcesorothercomponentsareconnectedinparallel,whentheyareconnectedhead-to-headandtail-to-tailliketwoside-by-sidehorsespullingawagon.

Studentswillproposeandconductvariousteststomeasuretheperformanceofthecarwhenchangingthepowersourcecircuitry.Possibilitiesare:

¨ Observationsofpropellerspeed(actuallyspinrate)–forexample,soundofengine,visualimpressionofspinningpropeller,tactileimpressionofwindfrompropellerblowingacrossskin.

¨ Measurementsofspeedofcar.¨ Measurementsofabilityofcartoclimbaninclinedramp.

ExpectedresultsAddingbatteriesinastringincreasesthevoltage;thecurrentremainsthesame.
