Introduction
Lacking both sight and sound, Helen Keller possessed an acute sense of smell that
recorded distinct moments of her life. She could revisit memories each time an
identified aroma reached her nose. While most are not as adeptly aware of scent as she
was, we actually smell each time we breathe.
Tiny molecules of aroma elicit psychological, physiological, and spiritual reactions in our
bodies and minds. All responses may happen subconsciously or intentionally. These are
the effects of aromatherapy and the power of essential oils.
The “German model” of essential oil use is largely based on inhalation to induce
emotional and physiological responses. Scent elicits the quickest response from our
brains, faster than sight or sound.
“ Smell is a potent wizard that transports us across thousands of miles and all the years we have lived. The odors of fruits waft me to my southern home, to my childhood frolics in the peach orchard. Other odors, instantaneous and fleeting, cause my heart to dilate joyously or contract with remembered grief. Even as I think of smells, my nose is full of scents that start to awake sweet memories of summers gone and ripening fields far way. ” - Helen Keller

Smells not only activate the release of stored emotions and memories, they also rouse
the production of hormones and neurochemicals that affect physiology and behavior.
Research shows that the sense of smell, though very complex, is a rapid acting, and a
substantial reason to use essential oils.
As early as 1949, J.E. Amoore, a British scientist, theorized an explanation of smell.
He believed each odor was composed of an odorous molecule with a specific geometric
shape that fit into a matching receptor neuron, lining the nasal cavity like a key.
This connection was believed to trigger nerve impulses going to the brain that
stimulated certain physical or psychological responses.

Last summer I was in a conference in Chicago where I met Angela Brooks among
many others. I didn't really know a lot about essential oils. I had heard people talk about
peppermint and because I love peppermint, I was all ears. They said that they put a few
drops in a glass of water and drank it. That was like music in my ears. I love to drink
water and the idea of bringing some flavor to my water sounded very good to me. So,
that is how I started with the Young Living Essential Oils.
And since I am drinking the peppermint water, I am totally caffeine free. Before I drank
about 8 cups of coffee a day and now I have NO desire whatsoever to touch coffee
other than decaffeinated coffee. That means a lot to me. I also learned that we can use
peppermint essential oil if we have a headache by putting a drop on the temples,
between the eyes and even on the back of the neck. This helps it to disappear. The
Peppermint Oil helps in so many ways; I noticed that the drops in my water also helped
with my digestive system!
I met the person who introduced me to Young Living Essential Oils in Chicago. She is a
vibrant and bold person who has worked for years as a psychiatric nurse, and is also an
author and a blogger. She has taught me so many things already and I am still learning
from her.
The moment I signed up, she added me to this facebook group that has at this very
moment
117 members and is steadily growing. You also can be in that group!

How Do You Use an Essential Oil? …It’s Simple—You Smell It
No matter the method of application, you first notice the aromatic scent of essential oils;
here are some things you need to know:
When starting, it is best to mix them with Young Living's V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil
Complex or any other pure vegetable oil, we call that a "carrier oil." Normally you mix 3-
6 drops of essential oil with 1-2 tablespoons of V-6. When you use it with a carrier oil, it
helps the essential oils spread more evenly. The oil mixture can then be gently
massaged into the skin.
This chart provides a basic idea of the different areas of the body where some specific
Young Living oils might be applied to the body.

How Therapeutic-grade Essential Oils Work on the Human Body
Essential oils work differently than any other natural substance on earth.
Unique features of essential oils:
They pass through the skin and cell membranes
They are circulated/diffused through the body within 30 minutes
They go directly to the brain through the olfactory bulb
They affect our feelings and our thoughts as smell is our most emotional sense
They perform multiple functions due to their structural complexity
The simplest and most common way to use the essential oils is topical application.
According to researcher Jean Valnet, M.D., an essential oil that is directly applied to the
skin can pass into the bloodstream and diffuse throughout the tissues in 20 minutes or
less.
7 | 77 Ways to Use Essential Oils for Beginners Olga Hermans © All Rights Reserved
I need to make a very serious comment here though that this only counts for Young
Living essential oils. You cannot expect to get the same results or quality if the essential
oil is not Young Living. Please do not use other brands of essential oils the same way
you would use Young Living oils. Quality is Very Important. Poor quality oils may
possibly be harmful due to unknown additives and poor plant or distillation conditions.
Many people think that essential oils are a “New Age” thing, when in fact their history
dates back to over 4,000 years. Maybe we better say they are Ancient Age instead of
New Age.
Essential oils were commonly used during biblical times and are mentioned hundreds of
times in the bible.
Unlike chemical drugs, therapeutic-grade essential oils do not remain in the body and
they leave no toxins behind.
Essential oils make more sense as air fresheners than commercial products, since they
cleanse the air by altering the structure of the molecules creating the smells rather than
masking the unwanted odors.

How to Use the Scent of the Oils
Direct Inhalation
Put several drops of oil into your hands, or on a tissue or cotton ball.
Cup your hands over your nose and mouth.
Breathe deeply.
Direct Application
Because essential oils are soluble with the lipid membranes of cells, they have an
unmatched ability to penetrate and disperse within minutes throughout the body.
You can apply the oils directly over an area of concern, but always be careful to NOT get
the oils in your eyes. If this does happen, flush with vegetable oil if an essential oil
accidentally gets in the eyes (NEVER use water to flush your eye or to dilute an essential
oil).
The “spicy” or “hot” essential oils such as Cinnamon, Clove, Thyme, Oregano and
Peppermint can be warming to sensitive skin. Dilute your Essential oils with the Young
Living vegetable oil, a pure Olive or Almond oil if skin sensitivity is a concern.
Diffuse oils into the air
Diffusing can help reduce bacteria, fungus and mold,
help with weight management, help you to relax and
relieve tension, improve concentration and mental
clarity and much more!
Use a Young Living diffuser that has been
specially designed to disperse a fine mist into the
room. Young Living diffusers will not heat the
oils, ensuring the full therapeutic benefits.

Place a bowl of hot water in a room. Sprinkle in a few drops of your favorite oil.
The steam will carry oil molecules into the room.
Fill a humidifier with water. Put a tissue with a few drops of oil in front of the
escaping steam. Do not put the oil in the humidifier. It will float on top of the
water instead of rising with the water vapor.
Put a mixture of a few drops of oil and water into a spray bottle, shake vigorously,
and spray on yourself or into the air. Shake before each use.
Carefully pour boiling water into a bowl. Add a few drops of essential oils. Cover
your head and the bowl in a tent-like fashion with a towel. Inhale the steam.
REMEMBER: to begin slowly, more is NOT better when using pure and potent essential
oils!
More Is Not Always Better
Respect must always be taken in regards to the power of an essential oil. In most
cases, one or two drops are plenty! Consider this: one drop of Peppermint equals
28 cups of Peppermint tea!
Young Living essential oils are not diluted or adulterated, nor are they processed
in such a way that renders them useless therapeutically.
They ARE potent and although one or two drops may not seem like much, I can
assure you, it is far more than you might imagine!
Have you ever used a high quality therapeutic-grade essential oil before? If not, you are
in for a wonderful surprise! Young Living Essential Oils are the best I have ever found.

reputation for relieving discomfort during the winter season and supporting the
digestive system.
Eucalyptus radiata is one of the most versatile of the Eucalyptus oils and has many
healthpromoting properties. This powerful essential oil contains eucalyptol, which in lab
