NOTE: UpSmart is designed to pause students and alert a teacher if their current work
indicates they are at risk of failing a level. If the system detects you are not responding to
instruction, you may find your account paused. Should this happen, it will be unblocked
overnight and you can continue working the next day. If you would like to avoid being
blocked, you can follow the suggested responses outlined in this guide—or simply
mimic a student who struggles at first (to view the feedback and re-teaching that
UpSmart provides) and then improves and levels up.

Logging In
To log into UpSmart, go to learn.edgenuity.com/student and enter the UpSmart Preview
username and password provided to you via email.

The Learning Map
You will land on the UpSmart Learning
Map. If a unit is locked, it tells the student
that the teacher has not yet made that
unit available. In the UpSmart Preview,
only one unit is available.
Click that unit now.
Click the open unit to begin.
Launch the Available Topic
Each circle on the Learning Map represents
a topic in the unit. The lines that connect the
circles show the prerequisite relationships
among the topics.
Notice that the only open topic in this unit is
Ratios. This topic is a prerequisite for the
rest of the unit. Only one topic is available in
the UpSmart preview. More topics will be
available soon!

Click Ratios to begin the topic:
Preview the Skills in this Topic
Each topic has three levels: Bronze,
Silver, and Gold. The levels build upon
one another to increase the cognitive
demand of the topic: first focusing on
concrete models, then verbal scenarios,
and finally on applying ratio understanding
when one quantity changes.
Before students begin this topic, UpSmart
will provide a short screener to place each
student in an appropriate level.
Select a confidence level and start the
screener.
Click the center “face” and then begin the assessment:

Complete the Topic Screener
Answer two questions in a row incorrectly. That will be enough to tell the system that you should
start in Bronze. Keep in mind that the learning path is completely adaptive—so we don’t need
too many questions to place the student. We’re just finding a good starting point, and then the
level will continue to adapt from there.
To be placed into the Bronze level, answer both of the first two questions incorrectly.
Check the first checkbox (and only the first checkbox) for the first two questions in this screener.
The system has now placed you into the Bronze level.
Click the green Continue button to launch the Topic Intro video:

Watch the Topic Intro Video
The introductory video will allow you to
rewind and replay the parts you have
watched, but it will not let you fast-forward
until you have watched the entire video
once.
Students who place into Silver or Gold
have the option to watch the video or not
watch the video. These students can fast-
forward if they choose.
Close the video player to begin the Bronze level.
Begin the Bronze Level
QUESTION 1
Notice that this item is a little easier
than the ones you saw in the
screener. The system knows you
are a student with very limited
understanding, so it starts you off
with the easiest item in the skill.
Imagine that you are not sure how
to begin, and ask for a hint.
Click the purple light bulb icon to trigger a hint:
Edgenuity UpSmart : Quick Preview Guide : MATH
Page 6 | © Edgenuity Inc.
The first hint is always going to explain what the task is asking you to do. Sometimes that’s all a
student needs to get started.
Ask for Another Hint
If that first hint doesn’t help you, you can also ask for another hint.
Click the Add Hint button to trigger another hint:

Ask for More Hints
The next hint is helping you connect back to key information in the topic introduction video,
reminding you about the importance of order in ratios. Feel free to take additional hints if you
wish—each task has anywhere between three and five hints—but the more hints you ask for,
the more questions it will take to place you out of the level and earn the bronze badge.
When students show that they don’t know something, the
system will provide more instruction, practice, and support.
In order to make that happen, the number of hints students
request impacts their proficiency profile. This is reflected in
the progress bar that appears at the bottom of the screen.
If a student answers correctly with no hints, the progress
bar will increase significantly. If a student answers correctly
after requesting many hints, the progress bar will only increase a small amount.
Answer the question incorrectly, making the common error of reversing the order of the
quantities in the ratio.
Select the first answer choice, which is incorrect, then click Check.

Answer Incorrectly Again
The system has learned that you are definitely struggling with this skill. Even with hints, you
were not able to get this question right. So you will now receive feedback based on the answer
choice you selected. If you had made a different mistake, you would have gotten different
feedback—the feedback is based on the student’s specific error.
Let’s say the feedback isn’t enough, though, to help you self-correct. This time, make another
error.
Click Try Again to close the feedback. Then choose the third answer choice, which is incorrect, and click Check.

Watch the Show Me Video
The Show Me video models how to answer this question, but it also provides an approach, or
strategy, that students can use to answer similar questions in the future.
The next question will be very similar to the question students just saw, and will allow them to
apply the same approaches and strategies modeled in the Show Me video. This gives the
program an opportunity to see whether the modeling that was provided was effective.
Close the video player and click Next.
If you answer too many questions incorrectly while logged in as a student, the system will block
you from continuing so that a teacher can be alerted to help you. UpSmart preview accounts will
be “unblocked” every night—so if you are blocked, you can continue the next day.
However, to avoid being blocked in this level and still maximize the amount of content you can
preview, you can answer the questions according to the guidelines below.

Answer Additional Questions
QUESTION 2
Answer this question correctly on the second try. The first answer choice (2:5) is correct.
Notice how your progress bar increases when you answer a question correctly. Also notice that students
receive an Answer Explanation that confirms the correct answer for the student. It allows the student to see a
strategy that they may not have used, but that could be used on future tasks.
QUESTION 3
Answer this question incorrectly
twice. Do not choose the first
answer choice, 8/6, which is
correct.
Notice that the first incorrect answer
triggers written feedback, and the
second incorrect answer triggers a
Show Me video that models expert
thinking.

QUESTION 4
Answer this question correctly on the second try.
The last answer choice, 2 to 9, is correct.
Notice that this question is very similar to the previous
question. This will let the system check to make sure the
instruction provided in the Show Me video was effective.
QUESTION 5
Answer this question correctly
on the first try. The correct
answers are the first and last
choices as illustrated here.
Notice that the progress meter
increases much more when you get
this item correct than it has
previously. This is because you
answered a hard item correctly on
the first try, without any hints.
QUESTION 6
Answer this question correctly
on the first try. The correct
answers are the second and last
choices as illustrated here.

If you have followed the guide recommendations, you will just have earned the bronze badge for
this topic. If not, keep answering questions correctly until you do.
To explore the higher levels of the topic (Silver and Gold), click Continue and then Go for Silver.
To safely avoid getting blocked, don’t answer two questions in a row incorrectly. If you do get
blocked, don’t worry. You will automatically be unblocked overnight and can log in and continue
the level in your UpSmart Preview account the next day.
