...the kids are back in school, a quick trip to the grocery reminds methat Halloween is frightfully close, and Thanksgiving and the holidays will be here before we know it (at least the retailers wouldlike for us to feel that way). It's also that time of year, when we arereminded to get out and vote, with popular media highlighting allthings political. All the commercials, political messages and debates have made me think: what would happen if we rallied theantiques industry around a political campaign (of sorts)? A quickbrainstorming session here at Garth's generated a few slogans.
We aren't the only ones looking for a way tohook more folks on the benefits of buying antiques, art and collectibles. One of our favorite messages ("Antiques are green!") hasfound great favor within the trade, but has yetto catch the larger wave of mainstream America. While a stronger voice for the industry as a whole would certainly be helpfulto the cause, we maintain that the history ofthe American antiques market has been basedin a grass roots effort - and, although themethods of communication have changedand become more technology-based, the industry is destined to grow and prosperthrough a successful return to those grassroots. In that vein, we invite you to "Be a Collector & Bring a Collector". Introducesome friends to the idea of buying antiquesby: passing along your trade papers and magazines after you have read them; bringingthem to an auction or antique show (a cheapalternative to a day at the mall or going outto a pricey dinner); and showering them with propaganda - articles abound on the environmental and economic benefits of buying antique and vintage.
This fall, we're adding a little fuel to your arsenal: for a limited time(and through the holidays), we are offering a BOGO deal on our catalog subscriptions. Here's how it works: buy a catalog subscription for yourself, get one free to give to a friend or relativewho you think might be interested. Prefer to stay online? Give bothsubscriptions away, and continue to receive our updates via email.
Whatever the approach, rejuvenating the market is in everyone'sbest interest. But, keep in mind - no one's going to want to join usif we all seem like a bunch of worry warts and complainers. Keep it simple and keep it fun:

“(The client’s) decision to consign quality period pieces to Garth's was a wise one. A New York City or New England auction houseprobably wouldn't have gotten a penny more forthe majority of pieces, and the Ohio furniture andcoverlets definitely wouldn't have brought as muchas they did here."
