1
Introduction
This document provides detailed information on the requirements to successfully install the EASY-nLC II system. To confirm that you have met the site requirements in this document, fill out and forward a signed copy of the Installation Request Form at the beginning of this document.
If you have any questions, contact your local sales representative or our remote support center at [email protected]
The EASY-nLC II system is designed to operate reliably under carefully controlled environmental conditions. As the purchaser, you are responsible for providing a suitable location, a suitable operating environment, a source of power of acceptable quality, correct solvent supplies, and proper waste systems.
Operating an EASY-nLC II system or maintaining it in a condition outside the operating environment specifications described in this guide might cause failures of many types. The repair of such failures is specifically excluded from the standard warranty and service contract coverage.

2
Site Preparation
Before a Thermo Fisher Scientific field service engineer can install your instrument, you must prepare the site. Transport of the equipment to the site requires wide entrances and hallways. Supporting the weight of the EASY-nLC II system, detector, and mass spectrometer requires large and strong workbenches. Each system also has specific power requirements. You must install a telephone within reach of the workbench.
You are responsible for providing an acceptable installation site.
ShippingThe EASY-nLC II system and all auxiliaries ship in a box that is approximately w 60 cm (23.6 in.) × l 55 cm (21.7 in.) × h 65 cm (25.6 in.). The box is placed on a pallet and dimensions of the complete consignment are w 80 cm (31.5 in.) × l 60 cm (23.6 in.) × h 80 cm (31.5 in.). The total weight is 42 kg (92.6 lb). Because the box comes with special protective padding, save the box for possible future use.

CAUTION If the instrument shipping container, Shock Watch, or other indicators show any evidence of damage or mishandling during shipment, do NOT open the container. Call your Thermo Fisher Scientific representative for instructions on what to do. If there is no evidence of shipping damage or mishandling, then you can proceed with the instructions that follow.
2 Site PreparationPlacement
4 EASY-nLC Preinstallation Requirements Guide Thermo Scientific
PlacementThe EASY-nLC II system alone weighs approximately 32 kg (70.5 lb); its dimensions are approximately w 35 cm (13.8 in.) × l 38 cm (15 in.) × h 45 cm (17.7 in.). There should be at least 15 cm (6 in.) free space at the back of the instrument to ensure proper air circulation.
Place the EASY-nLC II system as close as possible to the detector to minimize dead volume in the transfer lines.
TelephoneInstall a telephone in your laboratory near the instrument so that, if necessary, you can conveniently operate the system while you are working by telephone with Thermo Fisher Scientific Technical Support. Place the voice telephone outlet within 2 m (6 ft) of your LC/MS system.
IMPORTANT Your instrument is designed to work in a controlled electromagnetic environment. Do not use radio frequency transmitters, such as mobile phones, in close proximity to the instrument.

Operating Environment
Attention to the operating environment will ensure continued high performance of the EASY-nLC II system.
Lab RequirementsEnsure that the physical environment meets these standards for your instrument setup.
Power
115 Vac; +15/–20%; 50/60 Hz; 250 VA230 Vac; +15/–20%; 50/60 Hz; 250 VA
(For UPS dimensioning, assume 300W)
For 115 Vac: one 5.0 AT-fuse (5 × 20 mm, IEC 127)For 230 Vac: one 2.5 AT-fuse
All fuses supplied with the EASY-nLC II system are UL Listed and CSA-certified.
Use the EASY-nLC II system only with appliances and power sources that have proper protective grounding.
Temperature and Humidity
For optimal autosampler plate cooling, maintain the working temperature within 5 to 30 °C.
The humidity should be between 20 to 80% RH and be non-condensing.
Do not plan the installation of the instrument close to a window or ventilation duct or other device that can cause significant temperature change. These temperature changes will affect the performance of the instrument.

Solvents
Make sure that you have degassed and uncontaminated LC/MS-grade solvents available: water/formic acid and acetonitrile/formic acid. Do not filter solvents before use. Filtering solvents can introduce contamination.
For information about LC/MS-grade solvents supplied by Thermo Fisher Scientific, go to: www.FisherLCMS.com.
Connections
The EASY-nLC II system ships with a test pre-column and a test analytical column. They connect to the front of the instrument with 360 μm (OD) fittings. For any other diameter, consult with [email protected] for the best alternative solution.
A transfer line between the analytical column and the detector/spotter must be available, for example: 20 μm (ID), 360 μm (OD), fused silica.
If the detector is a mass spectrometer, both a tuned nano-ESI source and online emitters must be available.
Detector
Make sure that the primary detector that you will use with the EASY-nLC II system is tuned and capable of stable spray at nanoflow.
Trainees
As part of the installation, the Thermo Fisher Scientific field service engineer will perform familiarization training, demonstrate the use of the instrument and software, and show basic maintenance procedures. You are responsible for confirming that all trainees are present prior to the start of the training session.
IT RequirementsEnsure that your network and IT setup meet the following standards.
Network
For data access and online support/monitoring, the EASY-nLC II system must be networked through the RJ45 10/100 Mbit Ethernet connection.
The instrument must be set up to use dynamic IP addresses through a local DHCP server or given a fixed IP address (probably by an IT system administrator).
3 Operating EnvironmentIT Requirements
Thermo Scientific EASY-nLC Preinstallation Requirements Guide 7
Contact Closure
The EASY-nLC II system synchronizes with the detector through a contact closure cable.
When connected to analytical equipment, such as a mass spectrometer, ensure that the protective grounding is shared between the instruments.
The synchronization can be either one way (the EASY-nLC II system sends a START signal to the MS) or two-way (in addition to sending a START signal to the MS, the EASY-nLC II system also monitors a READY/BUSY signal from the MS to avoid wasting sample material if the MS becomes unavailable).
Detector Software
The MS software must interface to the EASY-nLC II system using contact closure. Make sure that an experienced user of MS software correctly configures the system.
Thermo Scientific EASY-nLC Preinstallation Requirements Guide 9
4
Installation
Before installation, make sure that all preparations described in the previous chapters are complete.
When you have completed your laboratory site preparation, the EASY-nLC II Installation Request Form has been mailed or faxed to your local office for Thermo Scientific products, and the system has been delivered, call your Thermo Fisher Scientific office to arrange for an installation date. Refer to the Installation Request Form at the front of this guide. Telephone and fax numbers for Thermo Fisher Scientific Technical Support and Customer Service are listed in the preface of this guide.
DemonstrationWhen your new EASY-nLC II system is on site and ready for installation, a Thermo Fisher Scientific field service engineer will install it. During the installation, the field service engineer demonstrates the basics of equipment operation and routine maintenance.
Do not plan to use your new system for sample analysis until the installation is complete and you have signed the acceptance form.

Instrument Arrival
Electronic equipment carriers specializing in the handling of delicate machinery ship the instrument-type system to your site. Occasionally, however, equipment is damaged in transit.
Take the following precautions when receiving material:
• Check carefully for obvious damage or evidence of rough handling.
• Note any apparent external damage on all copies of the receiving documents and describe briefly the extent of the damage. Have the driver sign (or initial) next to your comments to signify agreement with your observations.
• To report the damage, contact your local service office, as listed in “Service Offices for Thermo Scientific SID Products” on page v.
U.S. and Canadian ShipmentsFor shipments to the United States and Canada, instruments are shipped by one of two methods:
• Local Distribution Center
• Free On Board (FOB) San Jose, CA, U.S., or FOB destination
If the system is damaged in transit, the method of shipment determines who has responsibility for filing a claim against the carrier. If the instrument shipping container, Shock Watch, or other indicator shows any evidence of damage or mishandling during shipment, do NOT open the container. Call your Thermo Fisher Scientific representative for further instructions.
Most systems are shipped FOB San Jose, CA, and any damage incurred in shipment is the responsibility of the purchaser and the carrier. However, Thermo Fisher Scientific will assist with claims filing and (billable) repairs if necessary.
