Student works to save summer camp
Kim Smith believes that naturecan be a healing place for children.
“Nature can heal children; there’sa quietness that can be healing,” shesaid.
The positive impact of beingoutdoors really hits home for theSmith family and their 11-year-olddaughter, Mariah, who reallyseemed to bond with nature at ayoung age, her mother said.
Mariah Smith has attended theAllen County Parks Summer DayCamps for six weeks every summer
since she was 5 years old. She wassurprised when the county parksdecided to cut back on the summercamps this year, due to a limitedbudget.
The summer camps are held atFox Island and Metea Park. Campattendees learn how to build
appropriate lodging, have theopportunity to go canoeing andlearn about being a naturalist. Thisnaturalist training involves learningwhat plants are safe to consume andmuch more.
“It’s just all natural out there, learning about nature, out in thewater,” Kim Smith said.
The reduced camp season inspiredher daughter to write an editorial, which was quickly picked up by alocal landscaper, Mo Palmer. Palmerowns Cultured Gardens, a land-scaping company and also contactedother landscaping companies andasked if they could help.
“She was impressed withMariah’s editorial,” Kim Smith said.“They started to raise money. Ithought it was great that an adultheard the pleas of an 11-year-oldgirl trying to get more kids out intonature.”
She said the day camps really
seem to have a lasting benefit.“It brings a lot of children out of
the city and into nature. We shouldreally be promoting more of that, not less,” Smith said.
So far, the fellow landscapershave raised enough money to fundan extra week of camp. More than$1,000 has been raised in responseto her editorial. The additional week of camp will be called “Mariah’sCommunity Nature Camp.”
The camps are for children ages6-12, and are held Monday-Fridayfrom 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thelocal landscapers, as well as otherbusiness professionals, are workingto secure funding for an additionalweek of camp. The camp costs $100per child, per week.
To donate funds, contact the AllenCounty Parks Department, whichcan be reached online at www.allencountyparks.org, or by phone at449-3312.

New frozen yogurt shop in Maysville Pointe offers unique options
When Yum Yums Yogurt-U-Makeopens up this month in the East Allenarea, owner Angie Kurek says it’s goingto change the way people view the
frozen treat.“Yogurt has always been around, but it
has changed,” she said. “As we’vewitnessed the changes for the last coupleof years, it’s been really interesting andintriguing. It doesn’t take a summermonth or a warm month to be appealingto the average customer. This is a waythat a customer can go in and do what
they want. It’s all self-serve and theyhave control. It’s all in the hands of the
customer.”Yum Yums, owned by Kurek, her
husband, Brian Kurek, her mother, JoAcker, and George Hill, will have fiveself-serve, frozen yogurt machines. Withthe middle option, which allows for atwisting of the flavors, this means that

Rob Palevich, a Do itBest Corp. retiree, recently published a book entitled, “The LeanSustainable SupplyChain.”
He is an IPFW educatorwho took many years of experience and used themto write a book designed tohelp others run lean andgreen operations.
“I had no intention of writing a book until I wonan internationalcompetition last July atKent State University andwas encouraged to write abook on the topic of creating a green supplychain,” Palevich said, inthe press statement.
“From there, it took more than a year and ahalf to pull it all together.”
According to the state-
ment, “lean, green supplychain managementcombines the efficiencythat lean technologiesdeliver with theenvironmental and costbenefits of sustainability. The book offers start-to-finish guidance forredesigning companyinfrastructure andtechnologies to achievenumerous lean and greenbenefits.”
Palevich also introducesthe key concepts of leangreen supply chainmanagement, while addingcomprehensive casestudies that give examples.
Palevich explained thatthe book could be useful
for any CEO or manager.“The book is targeted
for any CEO or managerwho wants to make their
company world class inboth lean and green meas-ures,” he said.
The book also has aclear purpose in theclasses he teaches atIPFW.
“The book really tiesinto my Lean Black Beltclass where the studentsperform projects for theState of Indiana, most of the hospitals and manyarea manufacturers. Infact, I hope to writeanother book on how toapply Lean Six Sigma inthe hospital and medicalindustry.”
But it was the experi-ence he learned whileworking at Do it BestCorp. that made a differ-ence.
“The experience I gained
in supply chain manage-ment at Do it Best Corp.— along with with theacademic training over the
last nine years — hasreally helped me to be able
to write this book,” Pale-vich said.

Allen County Voter Registration sent a certificate toEast Allen County Schools earlier this month, with thefinal results of the petition drive for the Woodlan K-12redesign project.
The number of signatures obtained in the petition drive
will allow the school district to move forward with theirconstruction and redesign plans for the school. The plans will make Woodlan Junior/Senior High
School into a school that will include students fromkindergarten through grade 12. The school currentlyhouses students in grades 7 through 12.
EACS recently kicked off its second petition drive —this time for the Heritage Junior/Senior High Schoolredesign project. This petition drive started in earlyMarch and is set to officially end on April 3 in the lateafternoon.
The Heritage redesign project will make the school intoa building that will house students in grades K-12, similarto the Woodlan redesign project. Currently, the school hasstudents in grades 7 through 12. Both projects are part of a comprehensive redesign plan that was approved by EastAllen County Schools in 2010.

Leffers said, She saidEarly Childhood Alliancealso educates parents whocall in for referrals aboutwhat they should belooking for in a carecenter for their children.
“We talk to parentsabout what they should belooking for,” she said.
“As an agency, we
know that the early child-hood years are times of rapid brain growth.”
Leffers said that it isimportant for a youngchild’s development thatthe care environment issafe, healthy and that thepeople are nurturing.
“We know that noteveryone will choose topick a licensed programand that’s fine. Weexplain what the optionsare in Indiana.”
The difference betweenlicensed and unlicensed
child care varies. Indianarequires that most typesof child care programsobtain a state license, butthere are exceptions.
Child care ministriesand home child careprograms that care for nomore than five unrelated
children are not included.“We’re unique in
Indiana,” Leffers said.“There are churchprograms that can be
really great and volun-tarily meet requirements.”
But in the East Allenreadership area, the short-ages in licensed carecould impact the optionsof many parents.
In the 46774 ZIP code, there is 1 licensed home,1 licensed center and 1unlicensed, registeredministry. There is 1licensed home in 46773and no licensed homes, centers or unlicensedregistered ministries inthe 46741 ZIP code.
Leffers said offering theorientation sessions andworkshops can helpcreate more options forfamilies.
“For us, we want tobuild capacity so thatwhen people call us, wehave something for
them,” she said. Beyondbasic workshops andorientations, Early Child-hood Alliance also offersa distinction between
licensed care centers andhomes, with the Paths toQuality program. Theprogram started in AllenCounty specifically andnow it is state-wide.
“We have over 200child care programs inour area that are partici-pating,” Leffers said. Shesaid Paths to Qualitydesignees indicate centersand homes that have goneabove and beyond forstandards.
The alliance also makeschild care referrals to

The most importantbenefit that yoga hasbrought to my life, as wellas many others aroundme, is awareness. Aware-ness can have an effect onevery aspect of your lifeand indirectly help youmake huge strides in yourgoals. When practicingyoga, it’s not just aboutthe awareness it brings toyour body with how flex-ible or inflexible you are,but rather what is actuallygoing on inside, bothmentally and physically.
We have to realize that thefood we eat, our lack of exercise, and the stress wehave directly affects howthe body functions.
Promoting decisionmaking
We are surrounded by asociety that promotesunconscious decisions ona daily basis. The norm of health in our society hasbeen filled with medica-tions masking a problem, rather than understandingwhat is wrong. Withoutgoing too far on a rant,my point is that yoga is a
great way to come tounderstand your body andmind. By observing howyour body responds, insome cases you may beable to prevent takingmedication and improveyour health naturally. Thisawareness helps us tomake informed decisionsabout our health. Althoughthis is not an easy task, itis great for longevity.
Connecting mind andbody
When starting to prac-tice yoga, most people
come for the physicalaspect of it. It helps themget exercise, stretch out
after a stressful day orweek, or even to helpthem breathe. Although
these alone are great bene-fits, soon after finding ateacher they connect with,
yoga becomes so muchmore. Often times, yogastudents talk about the
first “ah-ha” moment theyhad on the mat. This newfound clarity withinknowledge helps us under-stand what helps our bodyand mind and whathinders it. It helps us tolive the way we preach. Itallows us to take a stepback, slow down, and begrateful. It allows us toconnect with what isimportant, no matter whatbelief system you have. When we dive deeper thanthe want to have a tonedbody, the fluctuations that
often prevent us disappear.
Realize your unlimitedpotential
A popular text in yoga
is the Yoga Sutras. In thefirst chapter, the secondverse is translated to“Yoga is the stilling of thefluctuations in the heart-mind.” It is thefluctuations, or the criti-cizing, worrying part of the mind that put us in ourboxes or categories. Weneed to realize our unlim-ited potential, findappreciation, and allow
joy to be attainable in thislife. Awareness is devel-oped in practicing yogaand is often taken into
