• Motivation to use F20 in addition to G-II Retrieve in situ IWC on F20 flight level (-50°C, -30°C, -10°C). Validate the Doppler cloud radar estimates of IWC in HighIWC regions
(retrieved from reflectivity and Doppler velocity) using G-II and Falcon 20 in situ data.
And use the validated radar estimates to take advantage of the vertical resolution of the cloud radar to extrapolate the IWC & PSD in situ data (G II & F20 trajectories) for the new icing envelope calculations.

• Status in September 2012 On September 18th NASA management,
procurement and legal personnel visited FTA. They briefed NASA on FTA's financial capability as it relates to its ability to perform the contract.
On September 25th FTA communicated to their employees not to report to work until further notice.
To reduce risk exposure to NASA and its partners all government (and partner) provided equipment at FTA were moved to the fullest extent possible to NASA DFRC for storage. Shipment of equipment started on September 26th.

• Status in October 2012 On October 19, 2012 NASA issued a contract
termination notice to Flight Test Associates. NASA and Environment Canada have secured
all equipment on the aircraft including the instrument racks and associated avionics. Some items were not removed from the aircraft (i.e. satcom antenna) as they were too integrated into the aircraft.
Threshold Aviation Group (TAG) ferried the Gulfstream N81RR to the Chino Airport on November 3rd, 2012

November 20th, 2012 / CONCLUSION– Both Associate Administrators ( FAA- Aviation
Safety and NASA- Aeronautics) support the objectives of the HIWC flight research project and the continued development of an aircraft option (the G-II is the most likely candidate) for a full complement of instruments to conduct a field campaign in ice crystal environments. It is presumed at this time that path will take at least until 2015 and could have more than one deployment.
– The outcome of the Falcon 20 contingency discussions is that both the Associate Administrators want some additional information before a final decision can be made

• Conclusion Major changes wrt assumptions taken to build EASA-
HighIWC and HAIC project– Summer 2012: Darwin Field campaign, originally planned in Q1
2013, postponed to 2014 due to FTA QA issue– November 2012: NASA G-II not available in Q1 2014 due to
contract termination with FTA
2014 Field campaign is critical for HAIC project and can’t be further postponed. – Contingency plan: F20 to be the primary A/C in Q1 2014
