Dynamics & Expressive Techniques
"Howzat" by Jeff Duff and The Ed Wilson Big Band
The dynamics change fairly frequently. The piece begins with a gradual
crescendo, then it drops suddenly for the Piano solo
Once the vocals have entered, the verse is moderately loud and there is a
crescendo to the chorus each time which is loud
There are a number of expressive techniques used during the piece. The
Double Bass is played pizzicato. Vibrato is used in the Flute and occasionally
vocals. The flute does quite a few trills. The Trumpet is muted during the
second verse. Much of the brass and drum material is accented. The brass
drop off their notes during the chorus. Some of the vocal material is almost
spoken.
Dynamics and expressive techniques are used to create variety in this piece.
