It’s Talktime, Dryden Begins New Graduation Tradition
Prior to graduation, the Dryden Class of 2019 selected their favorite children’s books and wrote special messages inside them. These signed copies will be gifted to the incoming kindergarten class in the fall. This project was coordinated
by ‘It’s Talktime, Dryden,’ a group of Dryden educators including speech pathologists and classroom teachers who are committed to promoting early childhood literacy. This year, the project was made possible by Family Engagement Focus funding. “We would love if [this project] became a tradition,” said Dryden Speech-Language Pathologist, Mary Balfour. ‘It’s Talktime, Dryden’ hopes to raise money next year to continue this meaningful tradition within the District.
Freeville Elementary students visit Toad’s Too; Ice Cream Oasis
Freeville Elementary students made their annual trip to Toad’s Too; Ice Cream Oasis during their last full week of school. It has become a Freeville tradition that the students look forward to as a fun way to end the school year and
move into summer. Kathie Perkins, the owner of Toad’s Too in Freeville, started this tradition almost 30 years ago, along with her husband Dave Perkins when they opened the restaurant Toad’s. It was across the street from her current ice cream stand. The generosity of the Perkins is greatly appreciated by both the students and staff at Freeville Elementary School.
Recently, the Dryden High and Middle Schools hosted the annual Dryden Art Show, which occurred on May 21st in the Middle School gym. It was open all day to the students of Dryden School, and was open from 5:00-7:00pm for the public. This event contained a wide variety of styles, subjects, and mediums, all of which displayed the talents and improvements of different age levels. The show featured works from Ceramics, Video Production, Studio In Art, Crafts, AP 2D Studio Art, Drawing and Painting, Photography, Advanced Photography Dark Room, Media Arts, and Graphic Design. The Art Department and their classes worked tirelessly during class periods on Monday, May 20th, and during after-school hours starting May 17th, setting up and making sure that the event was as perfect as perfect could be. After the show had concluded, students and staff had cleaned the whole gym by 10:00 am the next day.Students began to give positive feedback about the event after participating, helping, or simply viewing the show. Morgan Best, an Intro to Video student,
says that the art show “showed the creative minds of Dryden students,” and was “a very fun and interesting experience!” Another student, Daniel Guenther, who takes Intro to Photography, claimed that he enjoyed the way “the artwork [was] set up in a nice way, and [he liked] the way they
provided snacks.” Not only did students give positive feedback about the event, but Joshua Bacigalupi, the school’s Superintendent, also responded positively. “I was incredibly impressed by the depth and breadth of the work that art students in the Middle and High School showcased at the Art Show… Everywhere I turned, there was a piece of art that sparked conversation, spoke to our human experience, or stirred the soul.” He concluded
his positive statements with: “The talent that Dryden students have in regard to the Visual Arts is something that we should be proud of and continue to support and encourage.” With all of the positive feedback from students, teachers, staff, and the public, we hope to make next year’s show even more remarkable. Given the talent of Dryden students, they never cease to amaze!
