membership for one or more years
contributions to the church this year both physically and

That funds for part-time students be reduced to $200
That a conference be set up with the individual applicants

That Segrid Davenport make reports in council meetings for scholarship
committee funds
That the program be held on the first Sunday in August at 5:00 p.m.

Jamila and Jasmine are the daughters of Deacon
Clarence and Sis. Segrid Davenport. Dr. Davenport
is married to Bro. Anthony Crenshaw.
They are the grand-daughters of the late Bro.
Thermon and Sis. Geneva Hudson, deceased
members of Mount Gilead Baptist Church. They are
also the nieces of the late Rev. Henry Davenport,
former Pastor of Mt. Gilead. Most importantly,
they are children of the King.
They are products of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.
They served dutifully in many ministries and
capacities; The Youth Choir, Senator Jeanne Lucas’
Sunday School Class, Ushers, Teen Ministry, District 4 and Vacation Bible School.
They are from a lineage of missionaries. Grand-mother, mother, father and many aunts.
Dr. Davenport was three presidents in one; General State Baptist, New Hope Association
and Durham County Missionary Union all in the same term. Sis. Jamila served as Fourth
Vice President of the Young Adult Department of the Durham County Missionary
Union.
Both received the Mt. Gilead Honors Award, Sis. Jamila (1996) and Dr. Davenport
(1997) under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. Leroy Davis.
They are graduates of Northern High Schools. Sis. Jamila is a graduate of North Carolina
Central University as well as Savannah School of Arts and Design. She graduated with
honors. Sis. Jamila is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.
Dr. Davenport-Crenshaw graduated Summa cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in
Physics and a Masters and Ph.D. in Material Science and Engineering. She is a Member
of Alpha Mu Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Mrs. Thelma Carrington
Mrs. Carrington has been a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church for more
than 80 years. During this time she has served as a Missionary, Sunday
School Teacher, and Organist for the Senior Choir and on various church
ministries. Although Mrs. Carrington states she is retired, she continues to
serve Mt. Gilead well. She is an active member of the Senior Ministry,
Sunday School and the pianist at Midday Prayer Meeting.
Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Carrington was an educator in the Durham
Public School system. After retiring she worked faithfully for several years
as a volunteer at the Durham Public Library. She is the daughter of the late
Deacon Alton Tuck and Mrs. Bettye Tuck. She was married to the late
James Carrington, Sr. and has one son.
Mrs. Carrington’s quite disposition and warm smile is an inspiration to Mt.
Gilead Baptist Church.

Mudy Alston Stone Mudy Alston Stone, North Carolina native moved to Durham in 1959 upon graduation
from college. She and her husband, Charlie R. Stone visited Mt. Gilead Baptist Church
many times before joining in 1962.
She was a public school educator in the Chapel Hill Public Schools for three years,
speech and hearing pathologist for Durham Public Schools for seven years, Assistant
Professor of Speech Communication & English at North Carolina Central University for
27 years. Mudy is a ‘people” person and has always been dedicated to teaching because
of her love for children and young people.
Soon after joining Mt. Gilead, she became active in the Music Department. She served as
musician for the Youth Choir and was eventually part of all choirs at the church. She
typed and printed the church bulletin for years, Sunday School Secretary and actively
involved in all areas of the church until her husband was called to the ministry. She then
moved on with him and served as chief musician for all churches led by Rev. Stone
which included Rogers Grove Baptist, Pine Grove Baptist, and First Ledge Rock Baptist
Church.
She was a Dean of Education for the North Carolina Ministers’ Wives and Ministers’
Widows Association for 10 years, and as a teacher of “The Total Woman” seminar for
the seminar for the association also during that time. She is active Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, District 4 PAC (Partners against Crime) and progressive community projects.
Since retiring from North Carolina Central University in 1996, Mrs. Stone continues to
work diligently as musician for the Senior Choir and Male Chorus at Mt. Gilead. She is
Chairperson for the Mt. Gilead Gazette, where she serves as chief editor and a member of
the Music Department.
Rev. Pebbles Lindsay-Lucas
Rev. Pebbles Lindsay Lucas is a well-known traveling evangelist. She has
preached throughout the surrounding areas proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ.
She is the daughter of Virginia Lindsay as well as the mother of one son, Barry Lindsay.
She is the wife of Rev. William Vincent Lucas. She has three sisters and four brothers.
Rev. Lindsay-Lucas is a 1982 graduate of Hillside High School. She is also a
1991 graduate of the Practical Nursing Program of Durham Technical Community
College. In 1994, she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from North
Carolina Central University. She was a member of the National Deans list while being a
student of North Carolina Central University. She is also a graduate of Duke University
Divinity School receiving a Master’s of Divinity. She served as Chaplain for the Black
Seminarians 97-98 at Duke Divinity School.
In 1986, Rev. Lindsay-Lucas accepted the call to ministry under the spiritual
leadership of Rev. Charles L. Chavis. She recently served as an Associate Minister of
Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Durham, NC under the spiritual leadership of Rev. Dr.
Leroy Davis for eleven years. In 1994, she was the first woman to be ordained at Mt.
Gilead. She is the Director of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Downtown Bible Club,
Chairperson of Evangelism, Coordinator for Children’s Talk and the founder of the
Inspirational Voices of Mt. Gilead. She participated in the Yolk Fellow Prison Ministry
and is a Clinical Chaplain for Triangle Hospice. She provides counseling services in the
following areas: Death/Dying, Teenage advice, Spiritual Counseling and is a consultant.
In 1997, she was recognized as a Young Outstanding Woman of America. She
has been identified as one who has a gift of reaching God’s people. She is the Faith
Coordinator and Director for Durham County’s Welfare to Work First Program. Rev.
Lindsay-Lucas serves as a liaison between Work First Participants, the Department of
Social Services and the Faith Community. Lucas’ primary focus is developing one-on-
one partnerships between a work first family and local congregations. The main goal is
to help families move from welfare to self-sufficient. She is a Notary Public.
Rev Lindsay-Lucas and her husband are new recording artists and co-pastors.
They have released their first song entitled “I Know He Never left me”. She is the Co-
pastor at First Chronicles Community Church in the city of Durham.

Deacon Clarence E. Davenport & Segrid Hudson-Davenport
Deacon Clarence Davenport (a native of Plymouth, NC) is the son of Deacon Clarence
and Ethel Davenport. He is a graduate of NC A& T University (electrical engineering)
and is a retiree of IBM. Deacon Davenport has been a very committed member of Mt.
Gilead since 1973. He has held and currently is holding, various positions throughout the
church. Some of those positions include Chair of Deacon Board, Vice-chair of Deacon
Board, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School
Teacher, member of the Missionary Department, Evangelism Committee, Nominating
Committee, Chair of Benevolent Committee, and the list continues
Segrid Davenport has been a member of Mt. Gilead since childhood. She is very active
in her church affiliations (Mt. Gilead & Durham County). She is a Sunday School
teacher, usher, member of the Senior Choir, Christian Education Committee, Pastor’s
Aide, VBS, Children’s Talk…and the list continues. Segrid holds many key positions
among county, association, district and state missionary levels. She has been, and
continues to be acknowledged for her outstanding missionary contributions and
dedication.
Clarence and Segrid are both extremely dedicated members and missionaries of Mt.
Gilead. They work with all organizations from the children through the adults. Both of
them have been acknowledged by Mt. Gilead for Outstanding, Loyal, Faithful and
Meritorious Service.

Mrs. Jettleen W. Pettiford
Mrs. Pettiford was born in 1928 in Roxboro,
North Carolina to Mr. John & Amelia Winstead.
She joined First Baptist Church at an early age. She
graduated from Person County High School in 1947.
In 1950 she married McNeil Pettiford. The mother
of eight children, she became a member of Mt.
Gilead Baptist Church in 1961.
She was employed at John Umstead Hospital
for 34 years. While employed there she received
many awards and certificates for outstanding service.
Prior to her retirement she attended Durham
Technical Institute through John Umstead Hospital
and became a Certified Health Technician.
Since joining Mt. Gilead she has been active
in Sunday School, Pastor’s Aid, Iris Cates Club,
Flower Club, Food Service, District 4 and
Missionary Group. She made 100 dresses and sent
them to Lott Carey Convention for their African
project.
She is the mother of Rev. Glenn Pettiford,
Ray Pettiford, Joyce P. Manning, the late Barbara
Pettiford, Deidra Waddell and Johnnie Pettiford.
She has eight grandchildren and four great-
grandchildren.

Mrs. Barbara Pettiford Eatmon 1955 – 2002
Barbara was born August 31, 1955 in Durham
North Carolina to McNeil and Jettlean Pettiford.
She joined Mt. Gilead in 1961. Barbara was an
active member of the Sunday School, Girl Scouts
and Junior Choir. She graduated from Durham
High School in 1973 and attended Durham
Technical Institute. Barbara worked as a
Respiratory Technician at Duke Hospital and
later as a Laboratory Technician at Sumitomo.
Barbara has one son, Brandon Christopher
Pettiford.
She was a fun loving woman who loved
life and was always eager to encourage and assist
others

JETTLEAN PETTIFORD

Mrs. Martha Vivian Thorpe Rev. Dr. Earlie Endris Thorpe
Vivian Branch Thorpe was born in
Durham, North Carolina. She graduated from
Hillside High School, received her Bachelors
degree in Music from Bennett College in
Greensboro, and her Masters degree from
Southern university in Baton Rouge, LA. She
taught 33 years, retiring from Durham City
Schools in 1987. She serves as a substitute
teacher and volunteer tutor.
At Mt. Gilead, Mrs. Thorpe has served
as Zone and District Leader, Director and
Pianist of the Children’s Choir, and President
of the Silver Set Senior Ministry. She is a
member of the Senior Choir, Scholarship
Committee, Pastor’s Aide, Rigsbee-Trueitt
Foundation, Missionary Union, Iris Cates
Club, and Willing Workers Sunday School
Class. She co-chairs the Christian Education
Committee and volunteers as the Church
School pianist. In the community, she is a
member of Retired School Personnel, Oakmont
Circle Neighborhood Association, Association
of Ministers’ Wives and Widows, Durham
Congregations in Action, Bennett College
Alumnae, Daughters of Dorcas, Hillside
Alumni Association, Delta Sigma Theta

Dr. Thorpe was born and educated in
Durham North Carolina. He attended North
Carolina Central University and served in the
US Army during World War II for 3 years.
Upon his return, he received his Bachelors and
Masters degrees from NCCU. He earned his
doctoral degree from Ohio State University.
Dr. Thorpe was a highly regarded
historian and the author of more than 10
books., including “The Mind of the Negro.”
He taught at Stowe Teacher College in St.
Louis, Missouri, Alabama A&M, Southern
University, NCCU, Duke University, and
Harvard University.
He was active in many community
organizations, including Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity, NAACP, and the Association for
the Study of Afro-American Life and History.
At Mt Gilead Baptist Church, Dr. Thorpe
served as a deacon, a trustee, director of the
Baptist Training Union and the Scholarship
Committee. He was ordained as a minister on
April 4, 1976. He served as an associate
minister at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church and
Ledge Rock Baptist Church in Wake County

Gloria Thorpe Doyle
Mrs. Thorpe and the late Rev. Dr. Earlie Endris Thorpe have two Daughters, Dr. Rita Thorpe Lamb (Claude) and

Senator Jeanne Hopkins Lucas
And
William “Bill Lucas, Jr. Bill and Jeanne Lucas have been Durhamites all
Their lives. After their marriage on August 2, 1959,
Bill became a member of Mount Gilead and the two
have been loyal, devoted and highly active members
in all aspects of the church. Their religious paths
collectively have included, but not limited to, being
Trustees, District Leaders, Church and Vacation Bible
School Teachers, Superintendents and choir members.
Individually Jeanne has been the Youth and Gospel
Chorus Director, Chair and Secretary of the Trustees.
Currently, she is on the Trustee Board, Chair of Church
Budget, Vice-chair of Church of Church Anniversary
And Homecoming and member of the Mass Choir. Her greatest attention is given to the
Sunday School teaching of teenagers, whom she dearly loves.
Bill has been especially dedicated to the young people and the elderly. He can be found
encouraging the young athletically and participating with church activities religiously.
With the elderly, he champions the Silver Set’s program agenda in an extraordinarily
manner. He chairs the Rigsbee/Trueitt Foundation and serves on the Finance, Men in
Action, Transportation, Building and Grounds, New Members, Youth, Building Council,
and Athletic Committees.
These role models not only give their lives to the church but civically, politically, and
educationally to the community and the state.
It is with great pleasure and a great sense of joy and gratitude that we celebrate this Scholarship Day of
1999, which is a time we encourage and establish an opportunity to invest in our children and youth of
this fellowship educational pursuit. We are not just interested in their spiritual growth in life, but their
ability to grow throughout achievements. We express our encouragement in a tangible way in order to
provide an opportunity for the youth of Mount Gilead to fulfill their educational goals
We must remember “a mind is a terrible thing to waste.” There must be assurance that the minds of our
youths will be used for great purposes in life.

In 2007, The Senate voted 44-4 to establish a scholarship fund in honor of Senator Lucas. The Jeanne
Hopkins Lucas Scholarship Fund would provide two (2) need-based, 2,500 annual scholarship at each
public historically Black college and university in the state. Senator Lucas, the first black woman in
the Senate died on March 9, 2007.

Mrs. Marie Bradley
(1921 – 2000)
Mrs. Marie McCoy Bradley, daughter of the late Charles and Adeline
McCoy, was born in Wagram, North Carolina. She was married to the late
James Luther Bradley. Marie departed her life on December 20, 2000. Mrs.
Bradley joined the Mount Gilead Baptist Church at an early age. She was a
faithful member of the Senior Choir, Missionary Circle, Nurses Aide, Iris
Cates Club, Lyon Park Community Club, Lyon Park Wonderful Senior
Citizens, and Daughter of the Elk. She was instrumental in developing a
church nursery and a room for the health professionals of Mount Gilead to
serve church members. Mrs. Bradley gave a number of life-saving
workshops at Mount Gilead. Mrs. Bradley was a graduate of Hillside High
School, DeShazer Beauty School, and Durham School of Nursing. Her
survivors are: one son, Cornell McNeil, and four daughters Dr. Dorcas M.
Bradley, Ms. Constance Bradley Bumphus, Mrs. Sandra Bradley Reid, and
Ms. Brenda J. Bradley.

MAXINE THORPE
(1942 – 2001)
Mrs. Maxine Bledsoe Thorpe was the daughter of Naomi and Roosevelt Ashford. She
was born in Raleigh, North Carolina on December 27, 1942.
Maxine was educated in the Durham Public Schools. She was a pioneer during the 1960
– 1961 school years as the fourth Black student to enter and graduate from the previously
segregated Durham High School, and was a vital member of the civil rights movement in
Durham during the early 1960’s. She continued her education at North Carolina Central
University.
She was a dedicated and loyal employee at Duke University Medical Center as a health
unit coordinator for 24 years, where she received numerous service and meritorious
awards.
Maxine was a loyal and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was married to Mr.
Bill Thorpe and they were blessed with two children, Timothy Thorpe and Valerie
Thorpe Gill.
She was a member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church for forty-four years. During that
time she served on various auxiliaries and committees including: the Anniversary &
Homecoming Committee, Family Life Ministry, Scholarship Committee, Finance
Committee and Usher Board (for nearly 30 years.

Ora Bryant Davis
Ora Lee Thomas Bryant Davis received her undergraduate degree
from Elizabeth City State University, and a Master’s degree from North
Carolina Central University. She also completed an LPN program, and was
proud to have graduated from the first LPN class offered in Durham. She
was active in many organizations, including Tau Gamma Delta Sorority,
Durham Retired School Personnel, and the Hillside High School Class of
’44.
Ora’s life revolved around children and education. She was devoted
to ensuring their wellbeing. Ora was an educator in the Durham County
School System for 33 years, and taught Sunday School for many years. Her
vision and ultimately her passion was the Mount Gilead Baptist Church
Scholarship Program. She believed every child should have an opportunity
to obtain a higher education, and she dedicated her life to making this dream
a reality. She was Chairman of the Scholarship Program from its inception
in 1983 until 2002, when illness prevented her from continuing in this
position.
She was a devoted wife to Alonzo Davis, a loving mother to Ricky
and Paula, a second mother to her niece, Maria, a proud grandmother of
Alicia, Angelica and Adrienne, a dedicated sister to 12 siblings, and aunt to
numerous nieces and nephews, and a friend to all who knew her.

Cathy Rodricka Pratt (1959 – 1988)
Kathy Rodricka Pratt was born February 24, 1959. She was the daughter of
Margaret Pratt Holder and Howard Holder. She departed life on July 18,
1977.
Kathy attended the Durham City Schools and graduated from King’s
College with a degree in Secretarial Science.
She was past employed by Durham County General Hospital. She was
active in the Mixed Chorus of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church and served on the
Family Ministry Committee. She supported the church physically,
financially and spiritually. Kathy was a supporter of the Mt. Gilead
Children’s Choir, guiding her children to also use their talents by singing in
the choir and singing to the glory of God.
Kathy was the mother of Erica Siobhan Pratt, and Vernon Antoinne Pratt
and the sister of Lavorne Pratt-Walker.
This scholarship is given in her name as a remembrance of her dedication
and devotion to family and her desire to see her children and others achieve
spiritually and academically.

There are so many good things that could be said about our father, but for those who did
not know him, some of his outstanding qualities were; hard work, a devoted churchman,
Chairman of the Trustee board for 38 years, a graduate of North Carolina College (now
NCCU), retired employee of North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, Licensed
Barber, Trustee of Bull City Elk’s Lodge #317, member of the Durham Committee on the
Affairs of Black People, a member of the North Carolina Mutual Retirement Club, the
Durham Business and Professional Chain, The One O’clock Luncheon Club and the
Durham Council on Human Relations.
Mr. Holloway was always pleasant and always smiling. Prayer was always his guide,
and knowing that God was at work in his life and affairs, he was always calm and
positive.
Please let this Scholarship Fund be a stepping stone to your success. Remember, life is a
preparation for the future and the best preparation for the future is to live as if there were
none. The business of life is to go forward.

GEORGE L. CHAVIS
(1918 – 1991)
George L. “Styles” Chavis was baptized by the late Rev. Elias Wimberly in
1947 and joined the Mount Gilead Baptist Church. He was a lifelong
resident of the East End Community, Durham, North Carolina.
George attended the Durham City Public Schools and a tailoring school with
the G. I. Bill. He possessed a God given talent to draw.
He was a World War II Army Veteran having served in the South Pacific
and the European Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1946. George
was a member of the Dorcas Masonic Lodge #460 for forty two years and
was a Senior Deacon.
George was a diligent and hard worker. For many years, he operated Styles
Shoe Shine Parlor on Dowd Street, part-time; establishing a good rapport
with many young men in the community because of his warm demeanor and
personal appearance. George retired from full-time employment with the
Research Triangle Institute in 1979 due to failing health.
He was affectionately addressed as “Styles” by his close friends.

Deacon Hezekiah & Rev. Mrs. Betty D. Ruffin

Segrid Davenport, goddaughter, has established a scholarship in honor
of her godparents, Deacon Hezekiah Ruffin and Rev. Betty Dunn Ruffin.
This favorite scripture of Deacon Hezekiah Ruffin has guided his life for
many years. He began his walk with God at Mt. Gilead in June of 1947.
Deacon was a very warm and gentle man who was firm in his faith in
Christ. He has served at Mt. Gilead in many capacities such as usher,
Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, Chairman of the
Benevolent Committee, Chairman of the Deacon Board, and dedicated
deacon.
He joined the church under the leadership of Dr. Wimfrey, was
ordained as “deacon” under Dr. Roland, and continued to serve and grow
under Dr. Moseley and Dr. Davis. A milestone in Deacon Ruffin’s life was
when he witnessed the building of the present day house of worship. His
name is carved on the cornerstone of this church. He loved the people and
ministry of Mt. Gilead.
In 1986, he married Betty Delores Dunn Ruffin. She was an ordained
associate minister at Charity Christian Fellowship, Inc. and served dutifully
in many capacities: Minister of Christian Education, Sunday School
Superintendent and Adult Class Teacher, Bible School instructor, Church
Clerk, and active member of the ministry of music and various other offices.

ATLAS & Willie Dunlap Mrs. Willie Dunlap joined Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in 1932, under the administration
of Rev. Wimberly. She is a charter member of the Pastor’s Aide Club and the Iris Cates
Club. She is a member of the Sunday School Department and Usher Department. She
served as a supervisor of the Junior Ushers from 1972 – 1984. She also served as a
member of the Social Committee for the overall church as well as different groups. Mrs.
Dunlap was a faithful participant of the Prayer Service and Bible Study.
Mr. Atlas Dunlap joined Mt. Gilead in 1939. In 1941, he became an active member of
the Usher Department and has been an active member. He joined the Male Chorus in
1942. He was a member of the Sunday School, Men’s Fellowship, and several
committees. Atlas was ordained as a deacon in 1962 under the administration of Rev. A.
D. Moseley. He actively attends Prayer Service for he truly believes in the power of
prayer.
My parents deserve to be honored permanently for the dedication they have shown in Mt.
Gilead Baptist Church. After 60 years of togetherness, their health has caused them to be
separated, but they still show interest in their church and in each other.

RICKY RICARDO BRYANT
(1947 – 1968) “A Man’s reach should exceed his grasp or what’s heaven for”
Ricky Ricardo Bryant lived this motto to the fullest inn his short life. As a
1965 graduate of the Hillside High School he served as class officer in both
his Sophomore and Junior Years, and as President of the Senior Class and
Hillside Band. He was a member of the Senior Superlative Club and
Debating Team. With all other things, Ricky was a featured soloist on the
Tenor Saxophone in both the Concert and Marching Bands.
Hampton Institute was his college of choice, where he continued to excel.
He was a Pre-Dental Major, a member of the Swim Team, and advance
Officer in the Army ROTC Program and Junior Class Vice-president.
Ricky Bryant joined Mount Gilead at an early age. He was an active

THE REVEREND HAROLD ROLAND
The Reverend Harold Roland was call to pastor Mount Gilead Baptist Church in
May 1948. He served for 12 years and seven months. Under his leadership, Mount
Gilead continued to grow and became known as “The Little Church on the Corner for the
Cure and Care of Souls.” In the spring of 1956, the erection of the present church began.
In December 1956, the first worship service was held in the new church edifice during his
pastorate.
A loyal and steadfast disciple and messenger of the Christian Ministry for more
than 50 years, Rev. Roland left an indelible mark of service, uplifting and sacrificial love
on the Mount Gilead Family.
He received an A.B. degree from South Carolina State University (Orangeburg,
S.C.) and a Master of Divinity degree from the Howard University School of Religion
(Washington, D.C.). In addition, he has pursued special studies in pastoral counseling at
Union Theological Seminary and Yale University.
A keen interest in journalism led him to write weekly sermons in a column called
“Spiritual Insight” for the Carolina Times Newspaper. This column spanned a total of 17
years. He also published three booklets of sermons.
Rev. Roland was called to serve as Pastor of the new Mount Zion Baptist Church
in 1960 in Orangeburg, SC. He retired from the active pastorate in 1971 after 11 years at
New Mount Zion.
After his retirement from the church, he remained active in religious, civic and
educational pursuits. He continued to minister to college students as chaplain at South
Carolina State University, Claflin University and the Regional Medical enter of
Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties. Additionally, he served as an instructor in the Morris
College School of Religion Extension Program.
A native of Barnwell County, SC, he is married to the former Juanita Reddish.
They have one daughter, Dr. Harriet A. Roland, an assistant professor at South Carolina
State University

MRS. ETHEL BARBEE HOPKINS
(1930 – 1999) Mrs. Hopkins was born in Morrisville, North Carolina where she was
baptized at the Shiloh Baptist Church.
She joined Mt. Gilead in 1948 after moving to Durham. She was a
dedicated and faithful member of this church. She was very active in the
Nurses’ Aid and served two terms as President. She was a member of the
Usher Board and served as Secretary. She was a member of the Silver Set
and the Stewardship Committee and also worked in Vacation Bible School
and Sunday School.
Mrs. Hopkins was a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Duke Medical Center.
This scholarship is given in memory of our mother, Mrs. Ethel Barbee
Hopkins by Nathaniel, Brenda, Michelle & Lewis.

HELEN MORRISON
(1916 – 1987)
Helen Morrison was a graduate of Hillside High School. She received the B. S. degree
from Winston Salem State University, Winston Salem, North Carolina, a M.A. degree
from Atlanta University, Atlanta, Georgia. She did further study at Duke University, the
University of North Carolina, and North Carolina Central University. Helen’s career
calling was a teacher and she loved children. Her teaching career lasted forty year. She
taught at Richard B. Harrison School in Selma, North Carolina for six years and at East
End-School in Durham, North Carolina for thirty four years.
Helen joined the Mount Gilead Baptist Church at an early age and served in many
capacities throughout her life. She served as Secretary of the Sunday School, Sunday
School Teacher, a member of the Finance Committee, the WIC Circle, a member of the
Willing Workers/Sunday School Class, Assistant for the Children’s Choir, Secretary of
District #8, and a member of Missionary Circle #2.
Helen was a member of professional and civic organizations including: past President of
the Durham Chapter of the Winston Salem State University Alumni Association, past
Basileus of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and a member of the Durham City/County
Retired School Personnel.

Lewis Owens, Sr.
(1922-1994) Lottie Owens
MR. LEWIS NATHANIEL OWENS, SR. was
born in Blackville, South Carolina. He graduated
from Voorhees College and Tuskegee Institute.
He practiced the building crafts in Durham for
over thirty years.
His service to Mount Gilead includes the Pulpit
Committee, Evaluation Committee, Church clerk,
and Trustee Board where he served as Chairman
for 16 years. He completed the David Gilmore
Scholarship and started the Harold Roland
Scholarship. He donated a dozen gold plated
offering plates and hymnals to the church.
Mr. Owens was named Kappa Man of the Year in
1972. He was a life member of the NAACP,
Grand Past Exalted Ruler in 1979, Improved
Benevolent and Protective Order of the World. A
sincere advocate of the Boy Scout Program, he
received the Silver Beaver Award in 1972 and an
award for over thirty years of dedicated service to
Boy Scouts of America. He served as Brick
Mason Foreman with Durham City Schools from
1977 through 1987.
LOTTYE MITCHELL OWENS was born
in Saluda, South Carolina. She was educated
at South Carolina State University, NC
Central University, and the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a
teacher in the Durham City School System for
12 years.
Mrs. Owens is a long-time member of Mt.
Gilead Baptist Church and was an active
member of the Mt. Gilead Gospel Chorus.
She joined the church in 1953 after moving
to Durham from Washington, DC, where she
worked with the Federal Government Internal
Revenue Service.
Mrs. Owens served as Chairman of the
Christian Education Committee. In this
capacity, she served as a delegate for the
church and attended the American Baptist
Convention Christian Education Conference
in Baton Rouge, LA. She has worked with
the Sunday School Department, Vacation
Bible School, and Baptist Training Union. In
fact, she served as Assistant Director of
Baptist Training Union, and also served as the
General Clerk of BTU for a number of years.

LEONARD AND MABLE LYON
(1896-1978) (1900-1993)
Leonard Washington Lyon, Sr. graduated from Whitted High School (now
Hillside High School) as Valedictorian of his class. He was an advocate of
education and a civic and community leader.
For a number of years, he was a member of the Union Baptist Church where
he served in many capacities. He was Superintendent of the Sunday School,
member of the Board of Trustees, member of the Male Chorus, and the
Senior Choir. Later, he affiliated with the Mount Gilead Baptist Church. He
became active in Sunday School, serving as a teacher. He also served as a
member of the Trustee Board and the Male Chorus.
Mable D. Lyon was a faithful and diligent worker. Through the years she
sang in the choir, belonged to the Pastor’s Aide Club, and lived to become
the oldest member of the church. Mrs. Lyon lived a long, honest and good

(1921 – 1977) (1918 – 11989) Segrid (Audrey) their daughter, her husband, Clarence and their daughters, Jamila and
Jasmine have established a scholarship in honor of her parents, Geneva McDonald
Hudson and Thermon George Hudson.
Geneva Hudson was an active member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church from early
childhood. She was an active member of the Missionary Department and the Usher
Board. She was a member of the North Durham Community, involved in improving
hiring practices for others, improving educational programs for children and adults.
Thermon George Hudson was born in Sweet Home, Arkansas. Mr. Hudson was a
World War II Veteran. He joined Mount Gilead in 1972, serving faithfully until his
health no longer permitted him to do so. He was a member of the Sunday School, Senior
Citizen’s Organization, District #4, Men-In-Action for Christ, Durham Ushers Union and
Vice President of the Men’s Usher Board.
He was employed for many years at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. When he
retired in 1978, he served as a school crossing guard through the Durham Police
Department.

DAVID M. GILMORE
1906 – 1981
David “Dave ” M. Gilmore was owner and operator of the Union Tailoring
Shop for forty years. He was a member of the Mount Gilead Baptist church
Trustee Board. He served on the board for 47 years, the last three years as
Chairman. He retired from the board in 1969 and was named Trustee
Emeritus.
He was a member of the 3 C’s Club, the Bull City Elk’s Lodge #317, the
Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People, the NAACP, and a
member of the Durham Business and Professional Chain.

MR. LEWIS OWENS, SR.
WILLIE SNEED
Mrs. Willie Goldie Royster Sneed was born on May 16, 1910 to the late Charles and
Kiszia Brown Mason Royster of Durham, North Carolina. She received her education in
the Durham City Schools. She was joined in holy matrimony to Freddie Douglas Sneed
in 1929. From this union three children were born: Alice, Fred, Jr. and Kittye. She
became a widow in 1943 when her husband Freddie died of a heart attack. She was
employed as a Custodial Supervisor in the James E. Shepherd Library at North Carolina
Central University for twenty-five years.
Mrs. Sneed joined the Mount Gilead Baptist Church at an early age, and worked
faithfully in many organizations of the church and community for more than seventy
years. Among the organizations at her church with which she was affiliated are the
Missionary Circle, Teacher of the Adult Sunday School Class, and a member of the
Senior Choir. She was also one of the leaders of the Sunshine Band.
Willie Sneed was President of the Durham County Missionary Union, a member of the
Board of the North Carolina Baptist Association, an honorary member of the Baptist
Board. She was also a member of the Daughters of Dorcas, and the Lion Park Garden
Club. Mrs. Sneed was also very active in a variety of civic organizations including the
North Durham Neighborhood Housing Association.
During her lengthy service to the Lord, she received numerous awards from various
organizations: the Church Women United, the National Council of Negro Women, Inc.,
Women’s Auxiliary of the New Hope Association, and the Women’s Baptist Convention.

Nellie Samuel Smith
(1921 – 1987)
Mrs. Nellie Smith was an active and faithful member of the Mount
Gilead Baptist Church, lovingly known as “Aunt Nellie” by the youth.
She served as Church Pianist, Chairperson of the Singles Ministry,
Bereavement Committee, the Gospel Chorus, District #6, Pastor’s Aide,
Baptist Youth Fellowship, Willing Worker’s Sunday School Class, the
Iris Cates Club, Baptism Committee and the Women’s Day Committee.
A nurse by profession, she consistently and constantly helped and cared
for others which she felt was her mission.
Her children wish to leave this scholarship in her honor.

ROBERT LEWIS HOPSON
(1943 – 1982) Robert Lewis Hopson, son of the late Mrs. Lonnie Mae and Mr. Willie
Hopson, was born March 30, 1943. He attended East End Elementary
School, Whitted Junior High School and was a 1960 graduate of Hillside
High School.
He joined Mount Gilead Baptist Church on April 18, 1954 at the age of
eleven. He was a member of the Boy Scouts and Junior Choir.
Robert chose printing as a profession. He was an apprentice printer for the
City of Durham Printing Department. He became Supervisor of the Printing
Department at North Carolina Central University and supervisor of the
Printing Department at Durham Technical Institute until his death.
He was a veteran of the US Army and Vietnam War.
Robert was the loving father of three children, Nichelle, Nicole and Robert,
Jr. whose achievements are a credit to the memory of their father. He is
remembered as a faithful son, brother and a man of warmth and gentle spirit.

The Reverend Dr. Alexander Dumas Moseley
1910-1986 Rev. Dr. Alexander D. Moseley served as pastor, leader, counselor, friend,
and teacher of the Mount Gilead Baptist Church from August 1961 until his
retirement in December 1981. Upon his retirement, he was bestowed the
honor of Pastor Emeritus of the Mount Gilead Baptist Church, serving in the
capacity until his demise in April, 1986.
Dr. Moseley served in the following capacities: President of the NAACP for
four years, President of the Southern Baptist Christian Leadership
Conference, Executive Committee of the Durham Committee on the Affairs
of Black People, and Executive Committee of the John Avery Boys Club.
During the 20 years of his pastorate at Mount Gilead, the quality of life for
the Mount Gilead Church family grew stronger because of his love and
concern, dedication and hard work for the Mount Gilead Baptist Church—
but most of all because of his divine faith in the Almighty God. He was
married to Earle Cleaves, and they have one daughter, Alexis Earle.
God has so significantly blessed the work of Dr. Moseley. His work and his
teachings will live forever.

MRS. ELMIRA MARTIN
(1882 – 1972)
Mrs. Elmira Martin (1892 – 1972) was an active member of the Usher Board over a
period of forty-eight years. During this period she organized two Junior Boards,
and she was known as the “Mother of the Usher Board”.
Mrs. Martin joined the Senior Missionary Circle to 1919 and remained a faithful
member over a period of fifty-three years.
She joined the Sunday School in 1919. She taught a Junior Sunday Class for
fourteen years, beginning 1920 through 1934. She was also assistant teacher of the
Truth Seekers Class (now the Bettie Tuck Sunday School Class) for a number of
years. She was a member of the B.Y.P.U. (now the B.T.U.), and she served as
President one year during the thirties.
Mrs. Martin will be remembered as a person who was interested in young children,
and through her efforts, many children joined the Sunday School, B.T. U., and the
church. She was also a charter member of the Iris Cates Club
