CENTRAL AGGREGATES Providing great products, great service and great value for over 30 years
A well established and friendly, independent company, Central Aggregates have been delivering lorry loads of
aggregates to our large customer base of both trade and domestic customers for over 30 years. No doubt
you’ve seen our 'Blue Lorries' running around the local roads, busy delivering our high quality materials, on a
daily basis.
Just over a year ago, we decided to expand and develop the business to enable our large range of building aggregates, different coloured decorative
gravels, good quality topsoil and bark chippings to be purchased in convenient bulk bags. This has opened up a new customer base of people wanting
to buy just a small amount of material to either smarten their drive, complete small landscape projects or create new planting borders in their gardens.
Being a friendly bunch of people, we have developed our local service to cater for free deliveries. Our crane off load vehicles are operated by amiable
drivers, who will take time to ensure that deliveries are made and placed directly when and where you want them. We endeavour to ensure that
anyone not experienced in buying our products, feels that they can either come to our premises or call us on the telephone and get friendly, expert
advice about the materials we sell. Our company is based around our customers needs and we strive to supply all your requirements without fuss,
in a friendly manner at a competitive price and to make things easy we accept all major credit and debit cards.

THE BOMB ON
ASHBY IN 1941On my regular walk from Kings Newton toMelbourne, I usually pass through the cemetery. Inthe near distance I can make out a row of SecondWorld War headstones: they mark the last restingplace of eight Royal Engineer sappers who had beentraining on the nearby ‘military’ railway and had
returned to their billet in Church Street. A ninth soldier was buried elsewhere. Itwas sheer bad luck that the wayward bomb fell that morning of 11th July 1940.
The Rolls-Royce Derby works, where the Merlin aero-engine was manufactured, escaped relatively lightly during the Second World War. Decent
anti-aircraft defences certainly helped. (by late 1940, Derby was defended by 28 3.7-inch AA guns, stationed on sites like the Racecourse and Markeaton
Park, eight Bofors and 26 Lewis machine-guns. In addition, around 30 barrage balloons flew over the town.) The Luftwaffe certainly tried - on the
night of January 15th -16th, 1941, Derby suffered its heaviest raid of the war when 50 high-explosive bombs fell; 20 people were killed and 1,650
houses were destroyed or badly damaged. However, all too often, bombs were jettisoned on places like Melbourne to lighten the aircraft as they
made their runs home.
In the Ashby area, on 3rd January 1941, incendiary bombs fell on Normanton-le-Heath; no damage
was reported. On 1st March, high explosives fell on Normanton, Newton Burgoland and
Swepstone. There was slight damage to farm buildings but no casualties. On 11th March, four
high explosive bombs fell on the same area, as well as on Packington. Again, damage to buildings
occurred but no casualties. On 21st November, high explosive bombs fell on Packington, damaging
the church. In Ashby Museum there are two poignant reminders of those terrifying days. On 5th
July 1941, one high explosive bomb fell on the town; thirty-one houses were damaged and one
woman was injured. In a metal box in our Archive Room, are several pieces of the shrapnel
gathered up from that explosion in Hill Street. There is also a crude (but exceedingly rare) four-
page leaflet illustrating the horror of the event. VE Day was still four years off.
Kenneth Hillier (Ashby Museum)

called “hot water extraction”, which enables a deep clean and allows only the fibres of the carpet to be cleaned meaning most types of carpets will
be dry within 2-3 hours to help minimise any disruption, and all solutions used are completely safe and non-toxic.
• Spotless keep everything clean and tidy

Ashby School art students achievecreative success during lockdownA painting by a Year 12 art student from Ashby Schoolhas been chosen for inclusion in the Royal Academy'sYoung Artists online exhibition. The painting by KatieBryant-Brown marks a first for the art department atAshby School. The artwork is a portrait of Katie'sclassmate Beatrice Penny.
Head of Art, Kate Storer, said: "This is an incredible achievement and such a
credit to the talent of Katie and the hard work that she puts in to her studies.
Everyone in the art department is incredibly proud of this result. It’s a first for
the department. Great news in such difficult times."
Other students have been using their time during lockdown to produce
some of their best work in subjects across the curriculum. These include
several extra curricular projects by students in art and design, including
artwork, clothes upcycling by textiles students and impressive culinary
creations by food technology students. Students and parents looking for
the latest information on returning to school after the summer should visit

What would your veryown monster look like? That was the challenge set in a competition, which was run bythe well known East Midlands charity, 'me&dee', in conjunctionwith James Austin, co-owner of Fairly Influential. The founderof the charity is Maria Hanson MBE. This wonderful charityraises funds to make holidays happen for the families of thosewho are very poorly; gifting families with special memories, when they are needed most.
Maria asked children (small and big), to draw their very own monster, which will then
be turned into a book written by local author, Mandy Ward. Once a winner has been
selected, they will receive a signed copy of the book, which will be out at the end of
July. The designer of the winning monster featured on the cover of the book also won
a T shirt, courtesy of Fairly Influential, with the winning design featured on it. (See
photo).
The winning entry will be the main star of Mandy's story, with as many of the other
50+ entries also making an appearance if possible. All profits from the sale of the
book will be donated to 'me&dee'. Mandy, who lives locally, started writing and self-
publishing books 10 years ago. She started her new business as a ‘Book Coach’,
helping others to write their story or book, this year.
If you would like to know more about how to write your own book, contact Mandy at :[email protected]

ASHBY DE LA ZOUCH & COALVILLE LIONS CLUBRegistered Charity number 515773
Ashby and Coalville Lions is a service-centred club, where its’ members use
their talents to improve our local community. Because we are local, we
know and serve the unique needs of our local community; as part of Lions
Clubs International, we can also address international community challenges
wherever they occur.
The Covid 19 crisis has meant that our annual Easter Egg Raffle (launched in over 50
pubs in our area just before lockdown) will not raise the sums normally achieved, but
we are very grateful to the pubs who have managed to pass on the monies they have
raised under very difficult conditions.
However, this has not prevented us from continuing to support charitable causes during
lockdown, including, Jaxon’s Chance (go to JustGiving and see how you could help a
young boy from Coalville get life changing treatment), St John Ambulance (towards
Covid 19 training for their members), and Cancer Research UK (as their income stream
has fallen dramatically).
Earlier this year, we committed to providing a public use defibrillator in Ibstock (our
second in the area), at a cost of about £1500. The good news is that it has arrived.
The not-so-good news is that we cannot install it at the Ibstock Palace until restrictions
on access are eased (we also need the services of an electrician to do it – please get in
touch if you can help).
If you would like to learn more about our Club, or enquire about possible support for a
local need, then email [email protected] or visit us on Facebook. We
would love to hear from you. We may be locked-down, but we are still here to help.

Their advertising service includes production, use of voice-over artists
and can include copyright-free music.
They offer a range of packages designed to meet your specific
requirements.
• You can write the voice-over script yourself or they will write it for you,
they just need a summary of what product/service you would like to
advertise and any details you would like to get across.
• They then send off this script to professional voice-over artists.
• They then schedule in your advert and it goes live!

Restoration Piece!
MGA Roadster manufactured from 1955 -1962also in coupe form as well.
Early ones had a 1500cc engine with drum brakes, later increased
to 1600cc with front disk brakes. Also a twin cam version was made.
Two thirds where exported mainly to America. Mine is a 1956
1500cc imported back from America in 2012 and underwent a full
nut and bolt restoration by myself taking 3½ years including
converting to right-hand drive. Well worth it on hot sunny days with
the top down.
If you look closely at the car you will see there are no external door handles or door locks. Gone are the days when you didn’t need to have
car security. P.S. Food for thought, when this car was made there were NO motorways in the UK.

Helping to keeppeople connectedTwo charities covering North West Leicestershirehave joined forces to reduce isolation and get peopleonline. Hospice Hope and Enrych who both coverNorth West Leicestershire, have combined theirskills and funding to offer a unique pilot scheme inthe area.
A number of service users have been identified as potentially benefiting
from receiving help to get online, and so the charities are offering a tablet
loan scheme to connect people with their support networks. The pilot,
which will run for three months initially, is hoped to be rolled out further
for more service users from both charities, enabling them to utilise new
services such as online Support Cafés and groups, as well as healthcare
and other vital services. Liz Waters, Community Engagement Worker
at Hospice Hope said “this is an exciting opportunity for both our charities
to reach out to vulnerable groups in these challenging times and to work
together more closely”
The scheme is funded through Ashby Hastings Rotary, The Community
Fund and other foundations. It is open to existing service users at Enrych
and Hospice Hope, as well as anyone in North West Leicestershire living
with a disability or condition leading to a reduction in quality or length
of life.

Here’s another installment in the exciting new series of stories by local author
and illustrator, Rachel Greaves. Keeping in the Ruffle theme, the new tales follow
a toy Ruffle and the adventures he has each month. Read on to find out more…
As before, each month there will be a word within the text. Just find the underlined,
italic letters in capitals then re-arrange them to create this month’s word.
For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk
Now available on YouTube – Ruffle’s walks: a series of short video stories
®
Try the Ruffle “Find the word” competition - this month’s word has 9 letters.
The answer is on the inside back cover.
For further information about Ruffle’s story books and other
adventures visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk or watch the new series
of short films on YouTube under ‘Ruffle’s Walks’.
After the large bird had dropped Ruffle,
the parachute made by the girl had
gently guided him to a landing next to
a boating lake in the park. Ruffle had
spent another night in the open with
the sounds from the lake echoing in
the stillness. It was quite comforting for
Ruffle to be near the geese and ducks
who had made the park their home,
even If they were very curious about the
new black and tan fur arrival!
The weather was lovely and warm
which had brought out families looking
forward to the promise of summer days
to come. In the early afternoon two
children walked Eagerly along the path
towards the lake. The older boy carried
a large model boat in his arms, the
younger girl a remote-control unit.
‘Wait at the edge please!’ called their
mother, a little way behind.
Once together they began readying the
boat for its voyage when the girl suddenly
caught sight of the white handkerchief.
She went over to investigate and gave a
cry of delight as Ruffle was uncovered.
She brushed him down with her hand
then took Ruffle, still Attached to the
handkerchief, over to her brother and
mother.
‘Look what I’ve found!’ she cried. Her
brother looked at Ruffle.
‘Let’s take the hankie off the dog then
tie him to our boat! He could go for a
Ride around the lake!’
Their mother helped to untie the white
parachute that had done its job so well,
then the pieces of String were used to
carefully tie Ruffle to the front, or the
bow, of the model boat.
‘There!’ she said once she had secured
him. ‘He’ll have a fine view!’
The boy took the boat over to the
edge of the lake and gently lowered it
into the water where it bobbed about
expectantly. The girl pulled out the
aerial from the remote control unit then
skilfully moved the boat away from the
edge Towards the middle of the lake
with Ruffle proudly guiding the way. The
boat easily rode the little waves made
by a gentle breeze that blew across the
lake.
The children took turns to guide the
boat but as the boy manoeuvred the
vessel around the little island in the
middle of the lake the boat suddenly
came to a stop. The batteries had been
Exhausted leaving the boat stranded.
Luckily the lake was quite shallow so
the children’s mother reluctantly took
off her shoes and socks, rolled up her
Trouser legs and waded carefully across
to retrieve the boat. With batteries dead
the boat would no longer sail so the
family decided to return home. They
untied Ruffle and decided to leave him
on the Bench next to the lake in case
the person who had dropped and lost
Ruffle returned.
Ruffle sat quietly on the green park
bench as the children and their mother
carried the boat along the path and
disappeared…

Martin and the Muck ShiftersA reminiscence by John Blunt
When the old Staunton Harold estate was being sold up in the1950's, my parents bought Lount Wood Farm on the Ashby sideof Lount village. It was a dairy farm, though almost half of it wasscrubby woodland, felled in the First World War and never re-planted. We hadn't owned it for many years before the NationalCoal Board designated most of the land and some of the nearbyland as an opencast coal site.
The contract to work the site was awarded to Martin Cowley, a bluff Irishman. He was one of several from the Emerald Isle, who started as machine
drivers and went on to become contractors in their own right. Several of them were based around Claycross in Derbyshire and were generally
referred to as 'muck shifters'. His workforce was largely Irish, as was his foreman, John Breen, who lodged in Ashby.
I liked John and stopped for a chat with him now and then. On one occasion we were standing by the 'high wall', the sheer face above the workings,
when John spotted something being done wrong by the digger driver at the coalface, forty feet below. No mobile phones in those days, he picked up
a lump of clay the size of a football and dropped it with unerring accuracy on the cab roof. The driver's head shot out and John gave him some choice
words in a thick Irish brogue I couldn't follow.
Government control over our lives, which came again with Covid 19, came in the Second World War and continued for many years afterwards, (meat
was rationed until 1954). But it was more direct, not the office-based nightmare of officials and consultants we have to cope with today. When the
coal workings approached Lount Wood Cottage, a primitive two-bed labourer's house with no main services, a decision was needed as to whether
to knock it down for the coal underneath it. My father and Martin discussed it over the kitchen table and I think of that decision today as I cycle
passed it. Much extended and improved by later owners, would half a million pounds be enough to buy it today?
The land was put back to agriculture, with just thirty-two acres set aside for trees. Martin Cowley and his team moved on and we didn't hear of him
for several years. Then we learnt that he had taken on the contract to rebuild the Hejaz railway in Saudi Arabia. This was the same railway that
'Lawrence of Arabia' and his colleagues were involved in blowing up during the war, which took the Staunton oaks. For Martin this was a step too far;
the natives spirited away his raw materials as fast as they were delivered. At his bankruptcy sale in England, two more Irish 'muck shifters', Hughie
and Paddy Murphy, bought his car. When they saw him afterwards and learnt that he didn't have the means to get home, they gave him back the keys.
Like Irishmen the world over, they were tough but generous hearted.

Cloud Storage for beginnersThe lockdown has forced many of us to work from home; this can be difficult for a multitude of reasons and today I’d
like to explain the basis of how using the Cloud can offer storage solutions on your own computers or mobile devices.
The best solution to this issue is Cloud storage, but what is Cloud storage?
Cloud storage allows anyone to rent storage space in highspeed servers provided by reputable companies in
the tech space such as Microsoft and Google; A user can then upload documents, photos, and videos to their
chosen service using WIFI or a mobile data connection freeing up space on the user’s computer. Files then
can be downloaded from the cloud at will! Cloud services have more benefits than just storage.
These services can also be an excellent tool for collaboration. Many of these services allow for multiple
users to access the same storage space; this can be a very efficient way of sharing files between family,
friends or co-workers.
Cloud storage solutions allow for a document or project to be worked on with a diverse amount of devices
which allows for great flexibility for users. Start a Project on your tablet in your lunchbreak and with the power of
the Cloud, it’s instantly accessible on your computer’s desktop when you get back to your desk.
So which service is right for you? While I’m not going to comment on pricing due to constant fluctuation here are some benefits of various services:
Google Drive is very mature in this market, offering 15gb of free space to users & has a wonderful Photo backup service included for free. Allowing
a user to backup and organise all your digital photos. I highly recommend Google Drive and Photos, I use it personally.
Dropbox allows 10gb of free storage and is implemented into a lot of businesses workflows currently.
Apple iCloud is great for people already using a lot of Apple products. The service automatically backs up documents, photos, videos, media bought
on iTunes along with data backups of your Apple computers. Although Apple iCloud isn’t usable on non-Apple devices.
Office 365 is Microsoft’s software subscription to their incredibly popular Word, Excel and Powerpoint applications. This service costs £9.40 per
month but comes included with one terabyte (one thousand gigabytes), of free cloud storage with your subscription. Perfect for those who use
Microsoft products.
I hope this helps explain the benefits of Cloud storage.
