Lab 1: Safety In The Chemistry Lab
You will keep this packet, as notes. You will complete and turn in the second packet as your official lab report.
Objective: You, the student, will be able to describe the lab policies and safety procedures to be followed while in the chemistry laboratory.
RULES FOR LABORATORY
1) You must be on time to lab.
2) You must follow all safety procedures at all
times.
3) You must be on task and carry your share of
the lab work in your lab group.
4) You must wear clothing and shoes that
protect your skin against chemical spills.
Sandals may not be worn in lab.
Keep a pair of sneakers in your
locker .
A TYPICAL LAB PERIOD
1) Pick up the new lab paper /have pre-lab out
2) Background for the lab, the procedures and
any safety precautions discussed. Take notes if
you have to.
3) Get goggles and put them on, and start
gathering equipment. **10-pt penalty for not
wearing
4) You and your lab partner will work together to
complete the lab. * record any data in the
provided data table (correct precision/units)
5) Clean up the lab station thoroughly Chemical wastes will be disposed of as per teacher instruction. Make sure to completely clean up the bench top and dry it off.
6) Once all groups have completed *goggles may be removed *placed back in the racks of the goggle cabinet neatly. * last person close cabinet and activate the ultraviolet light.
7) Begin the write up. *Draw graphs, solve problems, write answers.
All students are to be engaged until the dismissal bell rings.
REGENTS REQUIREMENT FOR LABS
1200 minutes of hands-on laboratory activity with PASSING lab reports to sit for the Regents exam.
LATE and INCOMPLETE LABS will be penalized 10 points up to one day late, then 30 points thereafter. In order to only lose 10 points for turning in an incomplete lab, the lab must be completed and return w/in 24 hours!
If you miss lab, arrange to make it up after school within FIVE SCHOOL DAYS of your return (on a Tuesday, Wednesday or a Thursday). Bring someone to help you.

Why should I follow safety rules in the chemistry laboratory?
The paragraph must be typed. It must consist of the following: 1) Introductory Statement that states your thesis 2) 6 to 8 body sentences that support your thesis, using information from the movie or from
the Safety Lab information packet (citing which one your supporting statements come from)
3) A concluding statement that briefly summaries the points you made to support your thesis.
