This Centennial Book is dedicated to the memory of our beloved brothers and sisters who are asleep
and waiting for Jesus to call them home.
They dedicated their lives to the church and spread the good news of our Lord and merciful Saviour,
As they worked on the building, God heard their cry because they were meek and lowly in heart.
These steadfast and unmovable Christians knew that the thief of time was coming and they had to
have a home with Jesus Christ as the foundation.
Therefore, we, the members of Salem Baptist Church, dedicate this Centennial Book to our de-
ceased members.

REVEREND MAYHUE H. BOSTIC, JR.
Since 1874 we have come thus far by the power of God almighty. God has blessed our church and
we should be thankful for the rich history that we now enjoy.
The nature of man is determined by the will of God and faith is the welding rod that brings forth
Christian success.
The pioneers of the early Salem Baptist were very successful because they paved the rough and
rocky way for us.
As we celebrate our Centennial, let us not forget that it is our Christian duty to pave the way for
the church of tomorrow.

SALEM BAPTIST CHURCH was founded in the year of 1874 at Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
Baptists in the Paw Creek and Hoskins community came together for the expressed purpose of organ-
izing a Baptist Church. After much debate on the issue of organizing a Baptist Church, it was finally
agreed upon by both of these communities to seek the aid of several officers at First Baptist Church of
Charlotte, North Carolina to assist them in organizing a legal and constituted Missionary Baptist Church.
After the church was organized and given the official name of Salem Baptist Church, land was pur-
chased for the construction of a physical building. The site of the original church was located in the
3500 block of Rozzells Ferry Road.
The church was erected and the seats were made of saw-mill slabs. There was a stream that ran
a short distance from behind the church which was used for performing baptismal rites, and there was a
one room school building adjacent to the church.
Reverend William Davidson of Charlotte, North Carolina was one of the early founders of Salem
Baptist Church and Reverend Henry Barnes was the first pastor to be elected in 1874.
Reverend Beams, Reverend Barnwell, Reverend Lindsey, Reverend Ranson and Reverend Pamserved as pastors of Salem Baptist before 1900.
Reverend R. D. Harris was elected as pastor in 1900 and Reverend R. J. Davidson served as church
secretary during his administration, from 1902 to 1915.
The congregation worshipped at the original site until moving to the present site in 1913. Reverend
R. D. Harris pastored until 1915 and during that same year the church elected Reverend McCauley. Hepastored until 1923.
Reverend E. A. Stewart was elected as pastor in 1923 and served until his death in 1943. During
Reverend Stewart's administration, the church was destroyed by fire (on June 6, 1934). During that sameyear the congregation rebuilt the church on the same site.
Reverend D. F. Moore was elected as pastor in 1943 and served until 1969. The late Reverend
J. 0. Pride served as Reverend Moore's assistant pastor for several years — until 1969 also.
Reverend Mayhue H. Bostic, Jr. was elected as pastor of Salem Baptist Church in 1969 and still
occupies that position. He celebrated his fifth Anniversary as pastor on August 11, 1974.
Under Reverend Bostic's administration our membership has increased to three hundred and fifty
members. The church has been renovated and a new heating and air-conditioning unit has been installed.
The old Paw Creek-Hoskins school building has been completely renovated and this modern facility
is now our Recreation and Education Building.
Our church auxiliaries include an active Sunday School, Baptist Training Union, Usher Board, Mis-
sionary Department, Gospel Choir #/, Gospel Choir #//, The Vocal Choir, The Jubilee Chorus, The Junior
Choir, The Young Adult Choir, the Pastor's Aid Society, The Nursery, The Steering Committee, TheChurch Council, The Finance Committee, the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees.

Sister Violet Berry, an unusual lady, a lady of courage and lots of strength. Sister Berry was married
to the late Mr. Lee Berry. To this union was born two boys and three girls, only one daughter is living.
Sister Berry has numerous amount of grandchildren, also great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Believe it or not, she has taken care of most of the children and not only them, but her nine brothers and
one sister, she being the oldest girl at the death of her parents, she had to take care of the others. She
is the only one living.
Sister Berry is full of advice and encouragement, because of her experience during her 93 years on
this earth.
Born September 24, 1881, Sister Berry came to Salem from John Chapel which was burned down about
two years previously. She became very active in the Missionary Department after becoming a member of
Salem. 1 am sure there are other things over the years that she has contributed to the Church, but most of
all she is noted for her strength and devotion to her family and the people around her. Although she is 93
years old she still has a garden, does her washing and cooking. There is one thing that she lets everyone
know, that the "Lord will take care of you."
'eacon AllienDeacon Allen Wallace and Sister Charlotte Wallace are so close until it is almost impossible to say
something about one without saying something about the other. The Wallaces grew up together and were
married at a very early age. They were united in marriage on October 4, 1914.
Deacon Wallace was born May 28, 1896 and Sister Wallace was born September 28, 1895. They did
not have children of their own, but they helped in rearing several children.
Deacon and Sister Wallace came to Salem from John Chapel. They united with the Church in 1921
and were baptized at the same time. Prior to Deacon Wallace joining Salem, he helped Salem to reorganize
the Vocal Choir. He led this choir for twenty-seven years. His wife was also a member of this choir. He
was also a pioneer in organizing what is now known as Gospel Choir One in 1944 and now Gospel Choir
Two in 1971. In 1933 he organized a club known as The Willing Workers Club. There again his wife was
by his side. Deacon Wallace was Chairman of the Trustee Board and has been on the Deacon Board for
many years. He was Superintendent of the Sunday School for fifteen years and Director of the B.Y.P.U.
A very active and dedicated man.
Rev. McCauley was pastor of the church when these two courageous people came. Although Sister
Wallace is and has been a shut-in for many years, one is able to learn many things by being in her presence.
She is very cheerful. Deacon Wallace is still active in church and we are praying that they will have many
more years together.

Sister Annie Davis, one of the Pioneers of the Salem Baptist Church still remembers at the age of
17 joining the Salem Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. R. D. Harris. The church was located
on the left of Rozzells Ferry Road where the Old Salem cemetery is still located.
Sister Davis was an active member of the church for many years. Due to her declining health her
activities have been curtailed. During her active years she served in the Missionary Department, the
Gospel Choir, and the Pastor's Aid. She still attends when she is able. She often talks about the lovely
times she has had during her many years of service. She is now 83 years old.
Sister Davis was married at the age of 16 to Brother Tom Davis. To this union was bom six daugh-
ters and one son. Her husband and two of her children are deceased. She has 13 grandchildren, 29 great-
grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. We hope she will have many years to spend with them.
'rother /losehh JUavidson
Brother Joseph Davidson, now 85 years old, has a vivid memory of when he joined the Salem Baptist
Church. He became a member during the pastorship of Rev. R. D. Harris in 1912. He worked for many
years, but due to age and illness he has not been active for many years. Brother Davidson was married to
the late Estell Davidson, two girls and five boys were added to this union. Two children are deceased.
We hope he will live to refresh our memories in years to come.
A lady that loves singing though she is unable to do much now still has the desire to try. Sister
lla Davis has been a shut-in for many years, but every chance she gets she slips in on the members of the
Salem Baptist Church of which she became a member at the age of 13. The pastor was Rev. R. D. Harris.
Sister Davis gave many of her years of service working in the Missionary Department, the Senior Choir.
She joined this choir at the age of 21, because at that time young children were not allowed to participate
in many activities. She was a member of the Willing Worker's Club which was organized in 1933 by Deacon
Allen Wallace. She and Deacon Wallace and Sister Charlotte Wallace are the only ones living out of this
organization. Sister Davis was also an active member of the B.T.U . and the Prayer Band. Although she
is in bed most of the time, she is a very lovely lady. Sister Davis was born January 3, 1894, making her
80 years old at this time.

IN MEMORY OF
Sister Janie Kennedy Montgomery &
Brother Abraham Lincoln Montgomery
Our dear Mom and Dad were pioneers in building the Paw Creek-Hoskins Community, working dili-
gently, they perceived that this undeveloped area would become a soaring industrial community.
They were blessed with the life span to realize the fruits of their labor from their children and
grandchildren. Sis. Janie and Bro. Abe as they were affectionately known, were active partici-
pants in rebuilding the new Salem's present edifice, Paw Creek-Hoskins Elementary and Plato
Price High Schools. They were involved in the old and new Mt. Holly Roads, railroad, Chad-
wick-Hoskins Cotton Mill, and Leaksvi lie Woolen Mill. Active members of Parents-Teachers
and Property-taxpayers groups, Sis. Janie served as Supt. of Church School, President, B.Y.P.U.,
Church Cleck, Member Choir, Missionary and Pastor's Aid Societies, Organizer and First Supt.
of Vacation Bible School. Both were active members of Lodges. Bro. and Sis. Aide of North
Carolina-Knights of Pythias.
We pause in rememberance. w '*h ruimble hearts of love
And reaii?© that time is of essence, in acknowledgement of God above.
The precious memory of our dearly beloved, will at all times be treasured,
The heritage is beautiful and priceless, and forever will be cherished.
For God has graciously, Blessed, Blessed and Blessed.
Congratulations on this very special occasion of your 100th Anniversary.
The Children, Ms. Idell Montgomery, Mr. Clarence Montgomery, and Mrs. Inez Beatty
