of Automated Growth-Based RMM
DISCOVERING THE POWER
Realizing the Problem
PART 1:
Webster, a Microbial QC Lab
Technician, needs to perform
an environmental monitoring
test near his company’s
production line. He uses
the traditional colony
enumeration method
as he’s done for years.
He first collects samples from
the production line and prepares
samples for incubation.
Then he loads the samples into
the first incubator at 22° C.
Once the specified time has passed,
Webster transfers the samples into
the second incubator at 32° C.
At the end of the assay, he removes the samples
from the second incubator and spends hours
manually counting and recording colonies.
Discovering a Solution
PART 2:
Frustrated with the time and energy he spends
on colony enumeration, Webster researches
rapid microbiological methods (RMM).
He discovers automated, growth-based RMM,
a method that saves time by automating the
tasks he already performs.
Citing the method’s efficiency and economic benefits,
Webster convinces his company’s senior management
to invest in automated, growth-based RMM equipment.
Using an Automated,Growth-Based RMM
PART 3:
Webster once again carries out an environmental
monitoring test, this time with the aid
of automated, growth-based RMM.
He collects and prepares samples using the same
procedures he used with the compendial method.
He then loads the samples
into the automated technology
which manages the incubation
and enumeration.
While Webster works on higher
value activities, the automated
technology handles the transfer
of samples for serial incubation.
Final results are
automatically
recorded and
uploaded to
the LIMS for
Webster and
other stakeholders
to view.
Realizing the Savings & Benefits
PART 4:
With fewer repetitive
tasks to perform,
Webster and his
colleagues can spend
more time on analysis
and intervention.
Miscounts, misplaced sam-
ples and data entry errors
are all but eliminated with
an automatic system, ulti-
mately creating fewer in-
vestigations.

Automated, Growth-based RMM can have a profound effect on company-wide operations.
Results in about half the time
Fewer out-of-specification investigations
Easier long-term trend analysis
Non-destructive test
Reduced product losses
