The Angel & Crown gastro pub. The term “gastro pub” was coined in Britain in the late 20th C. The concept of a restaurant in a pub reinvigorated both pub culture and British dining. It features seasonal British produce sourced from select artisan producers, regional farmers and Billingsgate Market. We’ll enjoy dinner at the pub and have the opportunity to meet & mingle with fellow FCPers and guests. Shane Holland, Chairman of London’s Slow Food Movement will address the group.

Purveyors of fine honeys, The London Honey Company was born on a London rooftop and now supplies honey to Fortnum & Mason and other specialized companies throughout the UK. We’ll learn the company’s fascinating history from urban bee keeper, author and company founder Steve Benbow and we’ll taste the honey.
In 1926, this famous grocery shop was transformed into the now iconic luxury department store offering afternoon tea to its customers. On 1 March 2012, its refurbished St James’s Restaurant was opened by HM the Queen and Their Royal Highnesses the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge, and renamed The Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon. The Salon has since been voted one of the Top 100 Restaurants in the UK. Fortnum & Mason is also famous for its luxury food items and hampers.
Fortnum & Mason has won the Tea Guild Award of Excellence for 2013. The High Tea will be our lunch and there’ll be some time to explore the bountiful food halls.
Our day begins with a walking tour: London, City of Market & Trade. Led by PhD-level docents, we’ll visit key sites in the commercial and culinary history of London. We’ll stroll Cow Cross Street, the historic route taken by farmers driving their produce to market on foot and visit the sites of medieval markets. We will learn about the past ubiquity of livestock in London, the expense of vegetables, the use of manure, and the proximity of people to animals. We’ll discuss the trend and resurgence of nose-to-tail eating, and look at the changing roles of food markets today.

A boutique hotel in the center of Derby.
Once a great landed estate of the Dukes of Portland, Welbeck is now a sustainable community providing cultural activities for visitors and is home to the acclaimed School of Artisan Food.
Once the country estate of the Dukes of Newcastle, Clumber Park’s beautiful expanse of parkland covers more than 3,800 acres. Common in UK country houses, these labor-intensive gardens fell into disuse in the 20th C but are now being restored. We’ll Tour the Park’s Walled Kitchen Garden.
Dinner will be on your own this evening. The hotel has two restaurants, a traditional dining room and one more casual serving lighter fare. The village center is a short distance (cab ride) and offers a number of dining options.
Called the “Heart of England”, The Midlands region encompasses stunning countryside, sleepy villages, medieval castles and Sherwood Forrest, home of the legendary folk hero Robin Hood.
“The making of real food is a complex, multi-tasking business. Rooted in the agricultural heart of middle England, the School of Artisan Food is taking it on,” said Judith Gifford, Founder of Tea Together.
We’ll visit its brewery, its dairy and also learn about a range of British cheeses and pair them in a tasting with handcrafted beers.

Tonight we will gather for our last dinner as a group. The hotel’s restaurant sources its produce locally and we will enjoy a relaxing and festive evening.
An inn-like hotel, it has a quintessential sense of place.
Daylesford is one of the most sustainable farms in the UK and has garnered national and international recognition including the Soil Association Awards, British Cheese Awards, Great Taste Awards and a Michelin Bib Gourmand Award for its Farmshop Café. Our visit will include a farm-to-fork lunch and a tour. We’ll see award-winning organic animals and produce; Aberdeen Angus cows, Gloucester cattle, Cotswold sheep, Daylesford Blue Legbar hens and over one hundred varieties of English fruit, vegetables and salad.
This historic market town, on the edge of the Cotswolds, is one of the most-visited places in England. Situated on the banks of the River Avon, it was home to the bard William Shakespeare.
The Cotswolds include some of England’s most beautiful countryside. Its rolling uplands - dotted with thatched roof cottages and crooked houses - represent the quintessence of rural England, as immortalized in countless books, paintings and films.
