Did the Lady Jane Grey plot ever stand a chance?

Aims

• To understand how the succession was changed

• To explore Mary’s response to the altered succession

• To assess to why the Lady Jane Grey plot failed.

Edward’s Death• Edward had been a healthy

child but he fell ill in late January 1553 with a chest infection or TB

• By April despite being warned that it was serious there were signs of improvement.

• Suddenly in late May he suffered a relapse and contracted septicemia.

• Death was now predicted. Surviving through June Edward finally died on 6th July 1553.

Why is the chronology of Edward’s illness and death significant?

Only in June was it clear that Edward was going to die. As a result those wishing to avoid a Marian succession had only a month to act.

Lady Jane Grey marriage was before June in defense of Northumberland.

How significant was this plot? • Edward undoubtedly supported a change in

the succession- the end of the Tudors.• It could have returned the country to a civil

war conflict possibly the reemergence of the war of the roses.

• It did effectively end the Tudors but for only nine days

• It could have been more successful had Northumberland not failed to muster troops effectively and act decisively in those crucial days.
