§ The internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators and connectivity, which enables these objects to connect and exchange data.
§ The IoT allows objects to be sensed or controlled remotely across a network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit in addition to reduced human intervention.
§ When IoT is augmented with sensors and actuators, the technology becomes an instance of the more general class of cyber-physical systems.

Security Challenges
§ Hackers and sensitive data loss create risks and will interrupt operations.
§ An IoT platform needs to be secured at every tier using authentication, authorization, outbound-only connections, blacklisting and encryption of data at rest and data in transit.

How Does This Affect Medical IoT?
§ Healthcare organizations are simply LARGE
§ Common considerations:‒ Complex and disparate systems,
buildings, machines,instruments, sensors, people
‒ Resource planning, logistics, maintenance, operations
§ Specific considerations:‒ Regulations and compliance
§ Further: Not all healthcare or wellness happens in hospitals
§ Key needs: Interoperability, standardization, security, mobility and flexibility

Recommendations for Successful IoT Projects
Treat AI as one of the tools Don’t get blinded by the hype,
but use it
Don’t bet against the proven market forces
Moore’s Law, connectivity, consumer buying strength
Architect for security from the start You can’t bolt it on after the fact
Plan for the unexpected Build in flexibility and openness
IoT is a cross-discipline areaYou will need to co-create with
multiple parties
“Good enough” today will be more than enough tomorrow
Don’t forget to keep an eye on the rearview mirror

Tracking Disposable Medical Catheters and Cables
A Practical IOT Example
Procedural catheters and devices are one of the larger costs within a catheterization lab

§ Desire to reduce patient infections from contaminated reusable devices.
§ Antibiotic resistant bacteria is harder to treat when a patient becomes infected.
§ Catheter device usage is on the rise, leading to more chances for infection.
§ Higher device volume drives down cost.
Why Is Disposable Usage Increasing?

The Benefit of Using IoT To Prevent Reuse
§ Better for the hospitals:‒ Reduced infections and
improved outcomes
‒ Insights gained from IoT can alert staff to eliminate the reuse of disposable items
‒ Eliminating reuse can save money and prevent litigation
§ Better for the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs):‒ Protects brand reputation
‒ Reduces litigation
‒ Improves product tracking and FDA reporting
‒ Improves forecasting: Insights gained from IoT will provide highly accurate and usage data

§ A couple of options exist:‒ Biocompatible Microtaggants (a traceable identification particle added to the
material used to prevent counterfeiting)
‒ Gamma-radiation-resistant RFID tags

The Tracking Process
IoT Procedural Suite Tracking
Step 1: Supplier provides tagged devices to OEMs and distributors.
Step 2: The facility received materials are prechecked for compliance.
Step 3: The materials are then pulled for the procedure and they are flagged as USED.
Step 4: Real-time usage data is collected from the full procedural suite.
Step 5: Any items that are reused trigger an event and that data is sent to the appropriate parties.

In Summary
IoT can offer hospitals and OEMs alike a unique way to explore new cost reduction initiatives.
So how do we make this happen?
1. The key is to get started! Be open to co-create with a vendor or partner.2. Motivate the OEMs to provide integrated solutions for device tracking.
3. Implement internal tracking systems prior to an OEM rollout.
4. Spread awareness to combat illegally reused disposable products..
5. Finally, watch the competitive landscape. If you don’t participate others will
take the lead.
