Developed countries should boostHIV/AIDS efforts in Africa

The World Bank’s annual ‘African DevelopmentIndicators 2002’ report maintains that high-incomecountries need to follow through on promises made toexpand trade opportunities and provide more aid if thenegative effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa areto be quelled, reports the Blue Sheet.1

HIV/AIDS funds granted in the USMeanwhile, in the US, funding in the amount of

$US923 million for FY 2002 has been announced byDepartment of Health and Human Services SecretaryTommy Thompson for individuals living with HIV/AIDS,states Marketletter.2 The funds have been earmarked forthe provision of prescription drugs, medical care andsupport services for those affected by HIV/AIDS. Eachstate in the US, as well as American Samoa, the Districtof Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Federated States ofMicronesia, the Marshall Islands, the Northern MarianasIslands and the Republic of Palau will be eligible for thefunds.1.
