Describe yourself
(Junior High to High School Students)
The purpose of this lesson is to engage the students in learning
conversational English phrases in order to describe him or her. Depending on how
well the students learn the new phrases, this lesson may take up to a couple of
days.
1. 2 min: “Everyday Common Greetings” exercise
2. 20 min: Introduce useful phrases when describing yourself
a. Music
i. Do you play an instrument?
ii. How long have you played (name of instrument)?
iii. What kind of music do you like?
b. Sports
i. Do you play a sport?
ii. How long have you (name of sport)?
iii. Do you compete in (name of sport)?
c. Art/Writing/Reading
i. Do you draw pictures?
ii. What kind of pictures do you draw?
iii. Do you free write? (English slang, meaning that you write
about various topics that are outside of school)
iv. What do you like to write about?
v. Do you read?
vi. What kind of stories do you like?
3. 20 min: Activities/Homework
a. “Get to know your friends” Bingo: each student would be provided a
grid sheet that would have these different questions/ideas listed. The
students ask each other these different forms questions/ideas until
they are able to fill out five squares in a row (the squares need to
have the students’ name in it; one student’s name can be used for
two squares only). An example Bingo sheet is attached to this lesson
plan.
b. “This is Me” paragraph: the students write a paragraph (5-6
sentences) that describes them, using the different phrases that
were taught.
